I'm thinking of looking for a used Ovation classical guitar in the near future. Could someone please give me a quick overview of the different models & their differences in features, value, nut widths, desirability, price, etc.? Thx,

Josh P

Rather than doing that, why don't you tell us what you are looking for and how the guitar will be used. The answers will be shorter and more to the point. And after everybody has offered their opinion, you'll have the information you were looking for on all the models (lots of opinions on this board).

Somebody want to tell me how smartass my response was?

Nah. Laying bait for somebody to chew up.

Actually, I thought it was a good response (until the last bit).

How do you like the GCDB?

It's beautiful! Hard to believe I got it and a Josh White in a single month.

Had no work Sunday so I spent the day slowly emptying a bottle of southern comfort, watching F1 & NASCAR, and playing the new ladies.

As it turns out, you were right about the crack - I find myself being surprised if I DO notice it.

Whatever you provided with it. Haven't had a lot of spare time and haven't even though about spending any of it changing strings.

Hiya Josh and welcome aboard.

I've got a pristine Country Artist LX in the For Sale Section. Here are the specs from Ovation:

Country Artist 6773-LX

And here's a link to my ad for the guitar:

One of my best guitars

Good luck with your search.

Thx for the info folks. I play some classical tunes, but I'm not a true classical player. A fingerpicking old hippie rock n roller I guess.

I fingerpick alot on my Martins, and my '78 Ovation Legend, so I'll be placing a want ad for a nylon stringer w/less than 2" nut width... in the near future. (I'm waiting for $$ back from an instrument that I returned)

If I had the bucks that Country Artist of Patch's would be mine. I think that is the model you are looking for ... all the features of a classical but with a narrower and longer neck. The other Ovation classical models all have the standard wide necks.

Vince,

Just ask Woody, you don't need all the money at once. And I need to get something moving. Get in touch and let me twist your arm a little.

Ya, what he said!

Vince, you have to at least try this guitar. Pay what you can and before you know it you'll be selling to TJ and buying it back in no time...

I wish I could get my hands on one locally to play it and see if it is what I really want. But there's way too much goin' on here at the moment with work AND home to be doing much checking. It seems like the time is just not right.

Too many words to read ... are you playing amplified? If so, go with the country artist, or maybe the viper, depending on volume. If it's unamplied go with a takamine or yamaha. I have a CA and love it.

My Country Artist (Sorry, 'only' a celebrity CC049S) has Nylon strings, flat fretboard, Straight Bridge and Slotted HeadStock. The nut, at "1 7/8ths" is wider than a normal western guitar but not as wide a standard classical/spanish guitar. (basically the same width a standard 12 string I think). Only down side is that it's just a little too wide for me to hook my thumb over the top and fret the 6th string.

Here's me learning classical gas on it a while ago - having said that - I don't play it any better today :( Just don't practice enough.

Nice job. I play it a bit differently in spots, but pretty close. I tried to play it with someone else watching the other day and couldn't remember parts. Happens to me whenever someone watches.

As I said, mine is the "Celebrity" so has a laminated top. I haven't been playing guitar long so I'm only just starting to notice the difference in sound you get from a solid top guitar.

I could be wrong but I kind of feel that with a laminated top you start to loss some 'ring-iness' once you get way up the fretboard. The high E string around the 12 fret for example is more of a dull thud than a nice clear ring.

Not sure if I've explained this right - as I said, I'm new to this game so don't know all the proper terminology (ring-iness - is that even a proper word - maybe I just made up a new word people will use in future to describe the difference between laminate and solid woods :) )

Anyway, after all that, what I'm saying is spend the extra and get a solid wood top - not a celebrity.

I think you did fine. Someone who speaks guitar might talk in terms of tonal qualities, but I get the thud and ringiness.
