Location: Michigan | i cant believe how a person can keep a voice going for 30 years or so and still sound like you did when you were young ( a 20 year old ) and just starting out in the yes group.i always had a horrible singing voice ( as a 20 year old ) and now it has reached an all time horrific sound ( as a 55 year old ) according to the wife and i have to agree with her on it

Unlike say... Burton Cummings and to some measurable extent, Roger Daltry. |

Last I saw him was in the movie "Across the Universe". Movie makeup or not, he looked surprisingly good. It was fun seeing him in different characters and singing.
I think Robert Plant still sounds great and John Mellencamp, too.

Joe Cocker lost his voice before he started. |

Location: nashville | Roger Played here in Nashville at the Ryman a few weeks ago. If it sold out it sold out Late. My guess is most of the screamers will lose it faster. ie James Taylor sounds exactly the same but JT hasnt strained a note in 40 yrs. But I do get the benefit of seeing some old timers at the Ryaman. The acoustic are the world finest and everybody brings their A game.. nobody wants to stink up the Ryman.
Saw Boz Scaggs a few Month ago, He still's got it. Saw Bonnnie Raitt a few weeks ago she still got it.
My vote for the Lost it award is Elton John and he lost it YEARS AGO. But still like to listen to the old stuff. |

Willie Nelson. He's changed dramatically. He doesn't really sing anymore, he more just speaks his songs with rhythm...
A lot of singers are actually better sings from age 40-60. It's when you get past 65 and move towards and beyond 70 that changes really start happening... |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate still have some of the best pipes in Rock, but the one that still amazes me is Ozzie. The guy can barely speak, but put a mic in his hand, and he just belts out this voice as good as ever.
Also, I must add to the list Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons who I saw last week just tear it up in Seattle. My first KISS concert. I've never been a KISS fan, but the opportunity came up and I wanted to see what all the fuss was. Well.. flat out.. best concert I have ever attended. No question... Flawless, amazing... walk out with mouth open... and the only thing that really surprised me was I expected it to be louder and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Voices really do change over the years, but professional training can minimize the effects of age and allow the singer to compensate in certain areas. Hitting a very hign note versus sustaining that high note is one example. Vibrato control is another. It isn't that big of a concern for pop voicing, but can be very important for a Broadway singer, and career ending for an opera singer. |

As for MY singing, well, it was never very good, but Vic is right. I know my limits and can usually work around songs that, a few years ago I wouldn't even bother trying. |
