I have this and the Bass DI which I love everything about.
ThE Countryman DI used to be the gold standard in a basic box and may very well still be. |

You can pay more and get more bells and whistles, but this is really all you need. |

In my overall experience with professional sound companies I don't see a lot of entry level stuff used. I have seen more than a few of these though:

Location: Scotland | Some people seem to be confusing direct boxes with preamplifers which include a balanced output, and they are really 2 different animals. If it's a DI Box in the true sense of the definition then the Baggs, Aphex and Tech 21 units mentioned above do not qualify, good as they are.
DI's are pretty simple devices. Doesn't matter if they are active or passive, they just do the same thing in a slightly different way, which is convert an unbalanced high-impedance line-level signal to balanced, low-impedance mic-level. An active DI box differs from a passive DI only in the way it isloates the output signal from the input signal and how it converts from unbalanced to balanced (A passive DI uses a simple coil transformer while the active uses an OpAmp that'll need phantom or a battery) The only real difference between the 2 is that if you have really good ears and a stellar sound system you might notice some comparative HF degradation with the likes of say, a Whirlwind, other than that they are pretty much the same thing.
For a pro-level Direct Box you need to look at the likes of Radial, Countryman or Leon Audio and a handful of others. The Leon is one of the few DI's available with an input impedance in excess of 30 MegOhms, and that's what you need to get a good sound out of passive piezo pickups without having to use a preamp. I have a Leon, and it's saved the day on numerous occasions. Pro DI's are like pro mikes - they cost lots of money. And there are those who can appreciate the difference and those who cannot
I believe Al can supply Radial.

Location: Greece | From my experience it is not good to use external di-preamp boxes if you already have a fine active system onboard..i have previus experience with para acoustic di and yamaha ag stomp. Such a bad blending with my internal guitar preamp!.Tone and volume on my Adamas 1687 was always enough for me..That's why i need a pure di box..Thanks all of you people! |
