For my birthday (is 45 old?), my OWMBO let me loose at the local GC. (mistake) I was suppose to buy a Korg PitchBlack, play a few and come home. 2-1/2 hours later she calls me and asks where I am. "In the acoustic room... and a guitar has attached itself to me" (actually several had). She begged me to put it down and run. So I did (the talk of new guitars upsets her greatly). 5 minutes later she calls back and asks how much. :) You can pretty much guess the rest.
I originally brought home a Martin XC1T Ellipse. I love ebony fret boards and the Ellipse Blend Preamp sounded great. Acoustically the XC1T was nice, plugged in even better (sound familiar?). Then I realized why I liked it. It sounded like my O's. Thats NOT what I wanted. That and the the "Made in Mexico" label, HPL sides and back, and unfinished top made me reconsider. So I went back the next day and A-B-C'ed the XC1T against an OM-1 and a D-1. After an hour of noodling, I chose home the OM-1. It sounds better than the XC1T unplugged (warmer and sweeter) and a different sound from the O's. The nicely grained rosewood FB I can live with. The Stratabond neck doesn't bother me at all, though the action could come down a touch. Its quite comfortable to play. Its the 1-3/4" nut and no preamp are taking some time to get used too.
I haven't taken any pics yet so here is an online pic for now.
Oh.. and the wife's conditions on this new purchase? No new guitars or equipment (discussed or bought) until 2011. Strings and maintenance are OK. The reward should I do this? A nicer, higher end Martin guitar early 2011, along with a trip to the factory. Its going to be a LONG year. |

noel Thanks. OWMBO did balk at the return of the XC1T (claimed it violated the "no discussion" agreement). But after explaining the differences between the two, she agreed that "Made in the USA" means alot. She even started calling the XC1T a fake Martin. That made me laugh.
Yes it will be a long year.
The keys to making it:
- No phone calls saying "Look what I found on Craiglist!"
- Trips to the guitar store must be disguised as pickups from the shop or string purchases.
- No discussing any 2011 guitar purchases with her... at all.

There's a few of us here with more of a headstart than he's got...the closest I've come to thinking about that part of my life is where to get enough guitar stands so's the girls can be flanked all around me. You know, "in lieu of flowers, send guitars." :D
Back to the topic on hand--very nice, Joe; let us know how it sounds as it opens up a bit.

Location: Tennessee | Joe, no offense intended. I read it as just promulgating the stereotype ... Ovations sound like cheap plastic imported guitars.
Not criticizing you, I'm just saying ...
I have a Martin that I like a lot. It does sound different than other guitars I have, including Ovations. But I do have an Ovation that sounds like the Martin more than it sounds like other Ovations I have. Nothing wrong with with that. I have other Ovations that sound more like other brands than other Ovations. I have Ovations that sound nothing alike. I have two Adamas that sound nothing alike. I have wood boxes that sound different from one another. That's what is so great about lots of guitars.
I'm glad you moved away from that HPL guitar. My son bought one to take back to Iraq with him the last time. I didn't like the way it sounded at all. It did sound like a cheap imported plastic guitar. Funny thing is, it took a shrapnel hit to the lower bout and was put back together with duct tape ... and it sounds better now than it did before. Maybe it just opened up. |

Stonebobbo... no offense taken, I hate the "plastic" comments myself. I saw how I wrote it, better phrasing could have been chosen. But like I said, I liked the sound the XC1T had. And a $900 guitar isn't exactly cheap. It was the same price as the OM1 and the D1. Alas, we all know how much good guitars can and do cost now-a-days.
Funny thing is, it took a shrapnel hit to the lower bout and was put back together with duct tape ... and it sounds better now than it did before. Maybe it just opened up. A shrapnel hit? I'd say it opened up... and got some serious mojo in the process. And why close up the hole? Clean up the edges and call it a custom sound port. |

Several month ago, I Sold my 2000 D42 to pay some bills and with the money left over, I was able to buy a 2009 KOA collector's ovation brand new. No regrets here. A different sound than the Martin, but man, what a guitar the 2009 KOA collector is. |
