Location: Paris/France | Hello,
You know that I was a little frustrated after the Balladeer #22 "story" so I decided to treat my illness...
What better thing to do than to buy another guitar??
I'm happy to share 2 pics of this very nice Ovation Dreadnaught Proto whom was waiting for me this evening at the Customs Services.
She's nicest than expected and she seems to be a great sounding guitar after 10 minutes in hands.
After a long trip from USA to France, she needs to stay 2 or 3 days in my music room before to get new strings and a small set up.
Of course, this rare Bird comes from Mister Al so thank you again for that great deal!!
And thanks for the Beer and Coca Cola packs inside the box... :D
I can't imagine to open the box and not to find these packs, this is is the sign of a great instrument!! ;)

According Beal (in which we can trust... ;) ) whom was so kind like always to give me some information about this model, it was built in the early 80's. Several models were built but this one is surely the only one that has been finished.
The bowl is wider than on regular Ovation guitars and I'll take better pics ASAP.
It's 23.PM in Paris and it's not the right time to make good pics... :(

I don't remember playing it in the lobby but I do remember sitting in front of it when Al was playing.
If I had been wearing a hat it would have blown right off. |

this guitar is a great one but I have many great ones and some have to go.
the wood top adamas dread will take a lot to get away from me. but if the price is right almost anything can happen |

Ah, yes. Forgive me for mistaking one killer Ovation dread for another. Must've been the Patron that fuzzed my memory. ;)
I wish I could've heard this one, too. Especially if Gallerinski rates it so highly ... must be something very special in its own right. |

Dang, but I bet the Dread Legend is also a killer instrument. How could it not be? Too bad Ovation never really exploited different body sizes. Deep, mid and supershallow are fine but basically every ovation is an OM size guitar with one degree of freedom - the depth.
Having 2 degrees of freedom - depth and body size adds a lot more possabilities. Heck, how about 3 degress of freedom - what kinds of woods you build the backs and sides out of ... ah, there I go again. Nevah Mind. |

Location: Texas | Do those prototype Dreads have the same depth as the old deep bowls? Since the comfort and stability of playing deep bowls was apparently enough of an issue to inspire a new design (contour bowls), I wonder how the Dread "feels?"
It's probably minimal when standing,( ;) ) but how much does the thicker waist (the guitar, not the player,) affect the playability sitting?
If they are the same depth, presumably they have more interior volume, how much does that and the larger sound-board affect the tone and volume?
For the record, I love deep bowls, and I actually believe that the "slipping" and "comfort" questions have always come more from Ovation-bashers than owners anyway. However, if popular enough, even myths and urban legends have to be considered by marketing folks… the contour bowl is probably an easier sell than a deep-bowl Dread… |

The bowl of that guitar is wider but also more flat than usual.
2 pics for a comparaison: Adamas II Wide neck deep bowl on the left and Proto D on the right. ;)

This is the first picture I've ever seen of this very interesting prototype. It's very cool...Were there many made? Cloth bowl? What Year..? Labels?
The only odd thing to me.. is that somehow the Dred body shape and the Ovation Peghead don't seem natural together. It's like the Fender Strat peghead on some of their acoustics guitars, which really gives me a double take.

It's not so easy to take pics from the inside of the guitar but some of them are acceptable.
Maybe someone could tel me what kind of bracing is it??
It seems to be a "A" bracing.
The inside of the bowl is also very interesting !!

The action is a little bit high but very playable and she sounds so good!!!
It's probably not my best guitar for fingerstyle music but one of the best for playing with a pick.
I'm very very happy to have the privilege to own such a unique instrument.
I just regret that there's no label inside but it's not really important, it's an Ovation for sure!!! ;)

It you check my website you may find some of these types of gems on there. then you can buy one too and people can congratulate you for such a rare and interesting find LOL |

I uncovered these historical relics\treasures during a clean out at my fathers former workshop.
.. enjoy!
Was a Dreadnought Adamas center hole proto ever considered ???
a few more pics in the Album

This mold seems to fit to my dread proto but I'm pretty sure that the bowl was not hand laid on mine.
Maybe is it just a template??

So it's surely the mold used for the Dread proto and it a very interesting piece!!!
