I am so happy I am back to a 12 string guitar (had one when I was 15 or so). It sounds much richer, gives a much better sound to most songs I like to sing...
I find it not much harder to pick than a 6 string guitar, maybe owing to the wider neck. And another, maybe minor point, but important for me: A couple of strings fretted the same time don´t seem to hurt the tips of my fingers as much as single string seem to do... The first time I can play for hours without having to stop for hurt.

Well, who has similar experiences and wants to praise the 12 string guitar? I´d be happy about contributions from other enthusiasts...

BTW: Mine is a Ovation CSE-445 RB (maybe sold only outside the USA)

Best regards,

Chris.

I'm guessing that it would be like a 12-String CSE44.
And no, I don't think that they let us Americans get this one.
I had to get this pic from a European website.
But it sure is a Purdy One!

@ Old Man Arthur:

Yeah, that is the one :) I prefered it to a lot of others like the 2058 TX-5 and the 2758 AX-NEB, and I still keep on wondering why it sounded so much better...

In reality the colours of the Ovation CSE 445 RB look a bit more dark....

BTW, if some of you would like to listen to a piece of a Neil Young cover (but still with the 6-string) visit me: http://ovationfanclub.ning.com/profile/ChristopherKubaseck

Feel free to critizise, I know I have to work a lot still... :)

The USA 2058T has 'Quintad' bracing, which is similar to 'A' bracing.
The TX and the AX have 'Scalloped X' bracing, which is nice... But different.
Your CSE-445 also has Quintad bracing.
I still stand by the old Quintad bracing on Elites.
My 6778LX is an LX, but the original old Elites were designed around the old bracing pattern.

Oh, and you sing better than me... and play the harp better also.

Yes, praise the 12-string!

I thank Al every time I pick up my UTE-12!
John, Kim, Kevin... you guys outdid yourselves.

Tony's Newport 12 has been with me since January.
I'm seriously thinking about applying for another year with her.

I have not touched my Deacon-12 since the Newport 12 moved in.
All for the better, the Deacon still looks brand new.

We can't forget the EA58 Vipers!
I play my -7(nutmeg).
This black one is saving herself for a future suitor... damn, will one of you buy her?

Gone, but not forgotten, is Derby's Q598.
This was a great player that Tony and I tried to keep in the family.
We lost touch with the guitar and with Derby.
My wish is that the sun is shining for Derby right now.

Gotta love the 12 string O. They just ring out, and are easier to play than any other 12'ver.

OMA, Seeing your E-T12, makes me want to remove epi's. Maybe I'm just too old and/or been looking at epi's for too many years. I like the look of your E-T12!

I'll join the choir here. Since I returned to acoustic ownership a few months ago there has not been one that I have either enjoyed playing or hearing more(or made more real progress on) than my current 1866. I am picking it up daily and that's just never happened. It's become as easy to play for me as a regular sixer and just sounds great.

The biggest problem I have with playing the 1598 is that I have to stop every once in a while to pull my sox back up.

Sounded great. A bit more sustain than a regular hole model (if that's possible). Unfortunately this photo was only the tip of ice berg. Not shown were 2 more GC models, 4 Adamas 12 strings and 3 Hurricanes. How many 12 strings can one man play? So most have been sold off. All that remains is the U681-12 (the best adamas 12 of the lot), a hurricane and an A braced rebuilt 1115. I think Bobbo might have the small hole 12 from the photo above.

Dan, that sunburst Viper is the only one I've ever seen. Really cool. I'm not sure if the EA Vipers are still in production, and if not, I don't know if the factory will still make custom orders of this model.

Dan, our babies are now on the discontinued list. I don't find the 12's anywhere on the Ovation site. My black 12 is only twice what you usually pay for the 6's and probably 1/2 of what a custom order would have cost. Maybe we should explore trading vipers.

Nope. Mine had the winged bridge ... and the top was more evenly colored (but that is some good looking striping!). Mine has moved onto a new home as part of an incredible collection. But only because I had an Ovation 12 that is a killer guitar. He is a picture of it (and Moody's wristwatch):

Yep, MG's are real easy to maintain, cuz you maintain them every day. What's that acronym for "LUCAS" again?

"Why do the British drink warm beer?"

"Lucas makes their refrigerators".

Woodster ... ain't it amazing how Moody's thumbnail can be in perfect focus, but the treble side binding is not? Damn iPhone.

I originally bought a Celebrity that looked nearly identical to the 1858. The only obvious difference was the bridge end of the fingerboard wasn't nearly as pointed, it just had a slight curve. I'll see if I can find a picture of it..
Looked good, played lousey.

I knew somebody would give me a hard time over that picture Mike, nice job! :)

Thanks bobbo.

Come to think of it, that was the guitar that led me to the OFC many moons ago. I guess it was good for something after all. I got my money back out of it & the guy that bought it just loved it. It was ok for cowboy chords.

music mike what kind of car is that in the background?
That would be a 1974 MGB-GT...it's the parts car (throw a motor/trans/radiator in it and drive it away)...
The other car is in the garage (actually both now are for the winter): a 1970 MGB-GT split rear bumper, RARE! Everything there: needs interior and paint...
BOTH ARE FOR SALE AS A PACKAGE DEAL...PM IF INTERESTED...

Here? You've GOT to be kidding ... all we can help you do is learn to look in the mirror and say "You are special ... and you really do deserve another guitar".

If you need a good 6 string or you don't have a 6 string then that would definitely be my first priority. If you have a good 6 stringer then definitely treat yourself to a 12!

I don't know how long this will remain online, but here's one guy who's widely recognized as one of the most influential electric 12-string players… It's a nice recent interview with

Roger McGuinn

discussing and demonstrating the "Byrds sound." He talks about creating the sound back then with 12-string Rickenbackers, but he demonstrates on his signature 7-string Martin, which he calls "The Best of both 6 & 12 strings."

If someone was so inclined, I guess you could test the concept by temporarily removing 5 strings from one of your 12'ers, but the spacing might be a little odd. Mine are keeping all 12…

Great thread, I love 12-string guitars!

I've not been active here for a L-o-n-g time, but this topic is close to my heart. Some beautiful guitars here!

I love 12s, starting with an Epiphone I bought in 1972, no longer playable without a neck reset some day. Here is part of the family group:

From left, 1967 Gibson ES 335-12, 1967 Guild Starfire XII, 2004 PRS Custom 22/12, 1998 Adamas 1598, 1968 Ovation Hurricane 12. Each has its own charms, all are played and maintained regularly. String-changing day in my house is an event!

For acoustic, the Adamas cannot be beat, and works well with Florida humidity. Of the electrics, the PRS is utterly amazing, perfect neck and tones like an orchestra.

The Gibson has terrific sound but a skinny 1 5/8" neck, what were they thinking? The Starfire is a cannon, and weighs a ton, best played sitting down. The Hurricane is light, with good action and more of the classic jangly sound.

Barry,

I would call those the 'Sweet 60'!

That Gibby sure rekindles some old ol' fond memories. A friend of mine had one and at the time it 'fit' me well.

Nice family portrait!

Speaking of The Byrds, and 12 strings, and Ovations of course, check this out:

Wasn\'t Born To Follow

He does a couple more Ovation/Byrds songs Here along with lots of Ric versions and links to old Byrds videos…

…enjoy…
