Location: Michigan | i don't want to start a riot here but do any of you own or have played a taylor t-5 ? i was playing one a while back plugged into a roland ac-60 and it sounded amazing. it had very low action which i like but unplugged i was not impressed with the sound.they seemed to be pretty well built and have a very nice finish but i still think the price tags on them are pretty high.
any opinions on them from this group?
i ask this group of plastic players instead of the taylor group which will only tell me that all taylors are great because they are taylors. GWB |

Location: Vernon CT | I've played 2 about 2-3 years ago. 1 at GC when they first came out and another that a friend I use to play with at a local jam had.
There really was no unplugged tone, not much difference then playing a hollowbody electric.
Plugged in was another story. I thought it sounded real nice for what it was made for. Great action and fun to play. If you are going to use it for what it was made for and the price is right (i'm assumming you're looking at a used one) go for it.
Heres one on C.L. in Boston for comparison.

That pretty much says it all. |

The VXT is a chambered solid-body with Seymour Duncan Humbuckers and a special peizo bridge. It's an electric that can achieve some amazing "clean" almost acoustic sounding tones not to mention the depth achieved by blending the piezo and the humbuckers.
The T-5 is more like a Jazz box.. It's an f-hole semi-hollow with a lipstick humbicker thing...and a piezo-esque pickup. They seem to be marketing it like the VXT should have been marketed (IMHO) but the bottom line is it sounds like a Jazz box.. I even went to the Taylor site to listen to the samples.. it is what it is. |

Pickups
Inspired by Taylor’s Expression System® pickup for acoustic guitars, the T5’s pickup is yet another breakthrough developed here at Taylor. Thanks to its humbucking pickups and proprietary body sensor, the T5 produces a versatile range of pure analog tones from strumming acoustic to crunchy electric and everything in between. A hidden neck humbucker, a visible bridge humbucker, and a body sensor mounted to the inside surface of the top take advantage of the latest technology, utilizing Samarium Cobalt magnets and humbucking coils. The body sensor reads the movement of the top, adding even more warmth to your acoustic tone. Here is the T5 webpage:

T5 Soundcheck
Since I have actually played these guitars, I can say they are well built; have excellent sound (the 12 string is terrific), and are very versatile; Retail (like most of the major builds) is not cheap but they can be picked up used in various grades from $1400 to $2200...
The VXT's , also with a retail that was not cheap, are selling used and in some cases new for under a grand and I have seen them as low as $700 new...also a very nice guitar: the battery problem is the sticking problem from the owners and players I have spoken to...I am not sure but have these been discontinued? If so that would be a shame...
I have both of these guitars on my "some day" list. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I have never had a battery problem with my VXT, and its unlikely that I would ever find anything short of two guitars that could take its place. The only Taylor I would ever consider is probably the T-5 because, first, I go for these hybrids, and second, I have a colorful neon Taylor sign but nothing to go with it. The T-5 would have to be one of the exotic wood top models because, quite frankly, if I end up not playing it, at least I want to admire its looks. |
