Location: Bellevue, Washington | Hey guys,
So I just put some new Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze light gaugers on the 87c, and the sound is absolutely terrible. I'm not sure what strings were on the guitar previous as they were still from the previous owner, but they seemed to be a light gauge, medium at the highest.
My spirits are low as this amazing full-bodied, tone and volume monster has within a matter of a few minutes turned into a meek, shallow and tinny pathetic excuse for a guitar... so i come to you all for suggestions! What strings do you prefer for something like the 87c? I generally have preferred light gauge in the past but am beginning to become more comfortable with medium gauge, no heavies!
I'm willing to try anything to get the sound back on this guitar so let me know what ya think and I'll be heading down to Ye Olde Guitarre Shoppe in the morning! Thanks everyone :)

Location: Bellevue, Washington | Just wanted to add that I've used these strings before and have always liked them so I'm a bit surprised, different guitars, different strings I guess. To clarify a bit more on the sound or total lack thereof, it sounds almost like putting electric strings on an acoustic. Completely devoid of tone and volume. |

I am a former '87C owner and had the same experience. Go with the EJ16's. |

Location: SoCal | Oddly, deep body multi hole O's, to my ear, sound best with lights (12's) and center hole O's sound best with mediums (13's).
I used regular Elixir mediums on my 1537 and was always happy with the sound. Now I use Elixir phospher bronze lights on both my 1537 and my 87C. Love the sound.
I had Elixir Phos/Bronze mediums on my A braced Legend and was happy with the sound. The last string change, I put on D'Addario mediums. Sounds the same.... |

Location: Bellevue, Washington | Thanks for the suggestions everyone! After letting it sit overnight it seems to have opened up a bit and the sound is a bit better than it was last night though I think I will go pick up a pack of the EJ16s and see how those feel.
And Beal you made me spit out my coffee  :D |

I didn't like Elixirs on my 87C, but love'em on my 01C. The 87C and the Book Elite seem to like PB lights. My Martin dread sounds WAY too tinny with medium PB, but plain ol' light gauge Martin Bronzes sound fantastic. On my Custom Balladeer 12-string, silk-n-steels stand out, though PB's sound nice too.
To me, it's just part of the fun figuring out...coated or not...which strings suit which instruments. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I have found that Martin Phosphor bronze are the very best sounding strings on Ovations. I dislike Elixers for the very reason you stated, and although the D'Adarios sound OK, the Martins sound a tad better and feel a little easier on my fingers. Several members have spoken highly of DR Sunbeams strings. I am looking forward to trying some. |
