played an open mic last night. before going on stage I stood up my guitar strap got caught and I pushed on my guitar a bit (08 collectors') and the end of the strap got loose and the guitar came crashing down onto the concrete floor breaking off the treble ear of the headstock.

I'm sick

That's just awful.
Let me be the first to suggest that you send it to the Mothership.

I have to ask... did you still do your couple songs?

after my performance I searched the floor and found the ear for repair. I will probably just throw some titebond on it and glue it back.

yes I did perform. the show ALWAYS goes on.
one of my pals said I sounded a little angrier than usual.

I performed a new song I wrote for a documentary score and was rather nervous to perform it in public for the first time. funny how that went flawlessly

first time I every busted a headstock. the first nick is always the hardest but damn I was not expecting this one.

btw everyone loves the sound of that guitar

Bummer, Al. I feel your pain. I also had the same thought as Cliff regarding strap locks. I use them on everything. It can get pricey when you have 15 or 20 straps in the rotation (one for each guitar, or thereabouts), but I've never had one come loose. I have, however, learned the importance of double-checking that the male end piece affixed to the strap is fully inserted and locked into the receiver before putting it on my shoulder.

... I think I'm going to go order a set right now!

Al ... I DO feel your pain ... Of all the guitars for that to happen to! (If it would have been a Martin or Taylor, The whole headstock probablly would have came off) My first Ovation(1537)that I had saved for for a LONG time had the same thing happen to it, but my daughter was the one playing it, and she felt terrible about it. Mine broke but kinda' splintered in lots of pieces and was just hanging there really sick looking. To my amazement, I was able to saturate it with wood glue and clamp it into place, then I wiped it off carefully with a damp rag. It actually looked good and was barely noticeable. With your guitar though, I would probably bite the bullet and let the factory guys do their magic (and have them check the bracing at the same time) I'd bet they would make it look like it never happened.

I was playing my 12-fret BlowHole Koa at a bar-gig last year, and put the guitar into a Herc double-guitar stand to switch to the 12-string.

I was busy putting the 12-string on, and didn't notice that the Koa's strap had prevented the guitar from being fully seated/locked into the "cradle".

The guitar slipped-out, hit the floor on it's end-pin, and then just "fell over" FACE-FIRST onto the wooden dance floor with the most SICKENING sound you've ever heard.

The entire interior of th'Bar became a complete VACUUM from everyone holding their collective breath, and I damn near had a Coronary.

It lay face-down on the dance floor with two of the round, gold logo'd "covers" for the sealed tuners lying on either side of the headstock. For th'LIFE of me, I couldn't bring myself t'pick-up the guitar for what I was gonna' find enderneath.

. . . not a f@ckin' "scratch" ON it.

I had them bring-up th'HouseLights so that I could closely inspect it, & didn't find a friggin' thing WRONG with it (other than th'Low-E going slightly "flat").

I popped th'TunerCovers back on w/my thumb, & it was GoodAsNew.

Darren KNOWS how t'Build 'em!! . . .

correct
I retired the red one.
My intention was to use the ofc II but I sold mine not because I did not like it but because I really had no choice.
so I took up gigging with my last 08 collector's which I guess will now be mine forever

I once saw Steve Goodman drop a guitar. I was about 10 feet away from him. I don't recall which song it was (darn it), but he was jangling along and the strap — which looked like it was made out of a shoelace — just broke. His guitar crashed to the floor and after a millisecond of surprise, he just kept singing, actually ad-libbing a whole new verse about 'Now I dropped my Martin... something something something.' It was fabulous. Then he picked it up, kind of looked it over (it was pretty beat to begin with) tied a knot in the strap — honest! — and kept going.

I don't think I could leave things like that. I would HAVE to fix it. I would just re-live it each time I saw it.

dug a set of straplocks out put them on the strap and used it last night.

I am not a big fan of the straplocks but they seem to work I think they make the strap stand too proud of the guitar

Also, you cannot put your guitar in the case with the strap on if you use strap-locs.

Strap security with no guitar modification! With the strap in place, fit Lokstrap™ over the strap button.
A half-turn of the inner disk locks it in place; another half-turn removes it.
I originally got them to use on endpin jacks. They are simple and effective.

You say that like it's a bad thing :)

Seriously my only complaint with Dunlop's is that you MUST (Hope Al is reading this).... I repeat you MUST insure the lock is fully in. I always insert, release the button, then push and pull once to insure it's locked in.

I have tried other locks over the years... but managed to have guitars come out of them all except the Dunlop StrapLoc's

But that's just me... your mileage may vary.

Yeah, it is really no big deal.
But when I want to take a guitar out I like to already have the strap on it.

Problem with strap locks is that they're just plain ugly. I guess not as ugly as a busted guitar.

If I played standing up (which I usually don't) I think I would just use a washer and screw the strap "permanently" into the strap button screw hole of the guitar. If you think about it, as long as you have a dedicated strap per guitar, why do you ever need to remove it at all?

They do make black ones too. I'm thinking of getting a handful of the cheap stainlees steel ones and painting them to match my Heartwoods straps.

I went that route initially but soon realized I had a small fortune invested in straps....that's when I had the big guitar strap sale about a year ago. Sold off about 10 or 12 of them and I still have like 10 sitting around on various guitars and cases.

Good comfortable guitar straps are not cheap!

If you have the Dunlop Strap-Locs on there the guitar will not fit in the case.
I do have a strap on my Koa Celebrity without the locs, in my case.

And to clarify my earlier statement...

Dang, Al. I got that cold gut-clenching feeling just reading about the fall. Even though, in the grand scheme of life, it seems very disproportionate, watching a beloved guitar fall, just beyond one's ability to rescue it, is a true bummer. I've had wrecked cars that cost me less emotional damage than a dropped/fallen guitar.

BTW +1 on the Dunlops. So what if you can't put the strap in the case? That's what gig bags are for.
