Location: North Carolina | I suppose most of you guys have seen the news videos of the tornado that struck near a hospital in Virginia. I work at that hospital and despite the reports, there was minimal damage to the hospital itself. The neighborhood down the street, was another story - incredible devastation to homes.
We have a gig upcoming in that area, and were thinking of having our pay for the night donated to either the Red Cross or whatever relief fund might be set up for the survivors by then. We wanted to pitch the idea to the club manager to see if he wants to have some kind of special promotion that night as a tie-in. If he agrees, I was thinking of also putting out a tip jar, which we never use, to be designated for the cause.
Over the years I've played various benefits, but have never been instrumental in actually launching one.
Any pitfalls of which I should be aware? |

I organized a benefit for the Hurricane victims a few years ago, and trust me, if you don't have a lot of help, it's nearly impossible. I was lucky to have a lot of very good people jump in and help out. We were able to get a venue, food and beer, and 4 musical acts all donated. Sometimes, you just need to get the ball rolling. I think a lot of people want to help and just need the opportunity to do it. |

Your intent is a fine and commendable endeavor! |

Location: Stow, Ohio | I donated and auctioned off an acoustic Thinline BC Rich Mockingbird guitar with form fitted case that I got signed by Tim "Ripper" Owens the former lead singer for Judas Priest for The Red Cross Katrina Relief. The guitar sold for $500.00 and I never heard boo or hiss from them.
I am sure you can find a local relief organization to work with. The "Big Boys" spend way to much of the money on overhead.
Good Luck on your endeavor. I applaud your efforts. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | Three years ago, upon hearing news about the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia, my students at that time decided to help out the people over there - mostly children.
It was a great idea, but I've never launched one myself back then. Thankfully, a lot of folks (mostly my co-workers) helped stage the fund raising event. In addition to selling home made soups, the youngsters staged a show in the school's auditorium, with me accompanying them on guitar (with my O of course :) ). In the end, my students managed to raise $500, and in the last minute, a generous gentleman matched it. Every penny was sent directly to UNICEF who was providing aid in the area.
My hats off to your commendable efforts. :) |
