Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I chose to start a new thread on this because the topic is expanded to cover guitar weight in general. I was able to obtain a digital scale that measures down to fifth pounds, although there are more accurate scales out there. I had a few guitars on hand and the following list shows guitar weight in ascending order. The lightest of the batch was the Hamer Improv at 4.8 pounds. The 1187 SSB custom was second at 4.9 pounds (the scale bounced back and forth between 4.8 and 5.0, so I took the midpoint). The heaviest of the batch was the Viper III at 9.8 pounds, which surprised me. I was also suprised that three different Strats, all with ash bodies, varied by nearly a full pound. Of course, YMMV.

Location: Montana | Very interesting. Here are the weights given for solidbody Vipers by Mr. O in another thread:
As far as weight goes, although they all seem to be made of good wood, the weights are all over the map.
- Black = 9.25 lbs
- Cream = 9.00 lbs
- Natural = 8.75 lbs
- Red = 7.75 lbs!!!
and just for fun....
- Urelite = 7 lbs !!! All are regular vipers, all have the brass bridge. The Natural and Urelite have maple fretboards, while the others have the rosewood fretboards. So I guess as wood is a natural material they will vary or as it is often said "your mileage may vary".

now everyone wants a light guitar for resonance.

I thought I'd weigh the 1337 and 1537 and report the difference. Never got to the shipping scale with the 1337... played it for hours until I broke a string. Oh well... maybe tomorrow :) |

I weighed mine with precision scale, numbers are given with 1/100 Lb precision.
Here are data for my guitars:
Viper EA68 30th anniversary ("book" style) 6.33 Lbs
Viper EA63 proto WN 5.02 Lbs
Adamas 1881-2 5.31 Lbs
And for fun, i weighed the two following ones:
Miguel Gonzalez Abad (spanish classical) 3.44 Lbs
Gretsch G6122-1959 8.94 Lbs
There is a noticeable difference your EA68/1881 vs mine. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Brad, on the Les Pauls, I weighed two. They're at the bottom of the list just above the Viper III. Arnaud, our 1881 weights were very close, the EA68s about a half pound difference (could this be the tops, your spruce vs. my maple and ash?), and your nylon model is considerably lighter. Thanks for the update. |
