OK gang, the time is approaching fast and I could use a head count. The gathering is taking place June 25th-27th. The songwriting workshop with Craig Carothers will be happening on Saturday here at the shop, with concert to follow at the Wild Burro book store down the street. Cost of the workshop is $150 and includes a concert ticket. If you don't attend the workshop but want to see the concert, tickets are, I believe, ten dollars. (I'll get back to you on that when I hear from Laurel.) I have floor space available at the shop if you want to sleep here, but if you need a motel and I can get a head count, I can still arrange a group rate at a local motel. Let me know if you're in, and tell me what you'll be bringing for guitars. I have a couple of Adamas', the 2077LX, my old 1617 Legend, a 1767 Legend, Iffy's beautiful Parlor, plus all kinds of other brands. Several of my regulars have O's too. Oh yeah, and if you can spare some extra time, come early and stay late. The Black Hills offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. I'll give y'all a guided tour.

Driving up on the 24th, two for the concert if possible but sans the Saturday songwriting workshop during the day (we'll be motorcycle touring). Thanks for doing this, Alison, and keep us posted if you work up a discount at a local motel.

Two. Sara and I should be there all three days. We'll want a motel room if the rate is reasonable.

Alison. I think I would like to attend, but need to check with Fiancee to see if she would also be able to attend. If so, we would be bringing our own little apartment (little bright yellow camper), so would only need to know if camping is available locally. I'll try to let you know positively one way or the other. Sounds like a fun time!

Plenty of camping in the area. Last summer some friends from Connecticut came to visit for three weeks and they stayed at a place right up the road from my shop. When they left, they worked their way to Florida, and they say the campground here was the nicest they have stayed at. (Beautiful views of Battle Mountain) There's another one I like that is in the trees on Fall River (the river that is 87 degrees, even in the winter). Hope you can make it!

The car is rented, so the "Intrepid Travelling Sisters" ;) will be leaving Ohio on Tuesday morning and arriving at your place on Thursday. I will be bringing a few guitars--I just don't know exactly which of the thundering herd is going to get picked. One for sure, and as for the others, we shall see.
It seems like it's taken forever for the dates to get here; and now the time seems so short.
This is going to be so much fun! :D

Thanks...looking forward to participating in some manner or fashion - we met once - years ago

Alison. Checked with the "boss" and we will be attending. Looking forward to my first gathering with other OFC'ers. Could you provide name & number of the campgrounds available? I need to make sure I have a spot. We will be arriving on the 24th (probably). Looking forward to meeting you and others. Please PM with the info for the campgrounds.

Elgin, yes, by all means, your son can come! The concert is at a book store. Informal jam at the shop on Friday and any other day you can be here except Saturday because the workshop will be going on here. The workshop is filling up fast, but I also need a definite count on the concert because Craig always sells out. The place only holds about 70 people. I need to reserve tickets.

Alan, PM on the way.

OK, never mind the PM. I imagine others will be interested in camping too. I think the first choice would be kemosabay.com They have good prices and a great view. The other one that has great scenery is Allen Ranch. Just type it into google and it'll be the first site that pops up. They are more expensive and not as close to the shop, but then again, Hot Springs is a small town so EVERYTHING is close.

Thanks Alison. I'll check them out. Also, I forgot to tell you, put me down for two tickets for the concert. Don't believe we will be interested in the workshop. See you all in June.

I understand that whole area is above an underground "super volcano" that could go at any time and is actually past due. I saw it on TLC. Kinda creepy.

Nah, the supervolcano is actually at Yellowstone, and when it blows, it'll wipe out the entire midsection of the US. We here in South Dakota will be the lucky ones who die instantly. The folks in places like Indiana are the ones who will suffer the flames and choking ash before they die. ;)

After being in Idaho when St. Helen burped, I'll take the flash pan vs. choke & croak! Although the Aurora Borealis show would be to die for as seen from Florida...

Regardless, no change in our plan to head out yonder in June...

Yeah, despite the so-called "supervolcano threat", it sure looks beautiful up there. That's one of the few parts of the US I haven't been to. Some day.....

And I'm back to it as well. I was sitting and working on a Jerry Reed tune (Reedology) and my wife says, "don't bother with that stuff. Play stuff that people know". So I guess I'm done looking for that 4th chord.......

Hey, I had a talk with "Sir Iffy The Organized", (you can call me "Lady Confusion Of Canterbury") and he has offered his services in keeping things on track. He made a spreadsheet and everything. SO - if you're coming, please let IFFY know. I REALLY need to find out how many need a motel before it's too late to get a group rate, or even get you into the same place. I'm going to reserve a block of tickets for the concert too. So please, let Iffy know so he can pass all the info along to me SOON. Thanks!

Alison, is there an open mic Friday night? Perhaps it is a confabulation on my part, but there is a dim recollection of you mentioning something about such a thing in your earlier posts.

Basically I'm wondering how much preparation I need to do so that I don't totally embarrass myself. Just jamming is no problem. Open mic will require some preparation.

Speaking of jamming, will there be a song list that maybe we could all work from so that we have some common tunes to play on Friday at the shop?

I THOUGHT we would be doing an open mic, but the Flatiron has gone out of business! So, it's looking like one big jam session. I think somebody is bringing a book with the songs that usually get played at gatherings. If you (and I mean all or any of you) have specific things you'd like to play, maybe you could bring copies for everyone else.

Hmm, Sir Iffylot. I like that. ;)

I'll be sending an email to those that have shown any interest in attending the gathering. If you do not receive my questionnaire by Friday, please LMK!

I'll be using emails in that it will be easier to collect pertinent info in a 'folder'.

Karl (Charlie Ramon) over in Germany has the best song book I've seen and it's in English. About 4 hours worth of 60s and 70s etc. standards. Too bad Karl couldn't bring it, along with his great voice and guitar playing. The only problem I had with the book was that it wasn't in "senior font", so when I had my face in the book, Karl had trouble seeing it.
Iffy, send me an email anyway, so I can just beat myself up over not being able to go.

I'm still thinking about how to make this work, so if gh1 or numbfingers or anyone else is thinking about driving through Boise, please send me an email when you have details.
I can also get a pretty cheap flight to Denver, so if a Denver person is planning on driving and has an extra seat, email me and let me know if you want to pick me up at the airport and split gas money.

Mark, I am not sure when Lia and I will be heading up or returning.

We want to see Mt Rushmore and some of the other area sites so we will probably be there for 4-5 days and I am not sure if it will be before or after the clinic/concert.

When is the concert on Saturday? I'm currently leaning toward driving over Friday or early Saturday, spending a day or two in the Black Hills and then driving to Chicago. This might be only the second or third time in 32 years I'll take 2 weeks off in a row, so I'm still struggling with the concept.
I'm also trying to talk SWMBO into riding along, since she has to be in Chicago on Thursday and we honeymooned in the Black Hills and haven't been back since. I think she's afraid of you guys. Actually, she just has no interest in guitars, and very little interest in music, plus she gets her flight paid to Chicago, so riding for 20 or so hours in the car isn't too interesting for her.

Plus of course, your "homemade" songs. If you are attending the workshop, have a song ready to be critiqued. It could be something you have completed, or something you are working on that you think could use a little help. Have about 20 copies of the lyrics to hand out. If it is a song that you do with full band, it's OK to bring a tape or CD of your song, although it's more fun to do it live IMO. Of course you won't just learn what you could do to "punch up" that one song. You will learn how to listen to yourself with a more constructively critical ear - things you can apply to future songs. It's going to be so much fun!

Oh man,
I've been wanting an 8-12" Celestron for the last 25 years. I took astronomy in college and I have been in love ever since.
I can never seem to pull together 3-4K unless it's for a guitar ;) .
That Nexstar4 looks pretty cool.

Don't be surprised if I'm leaning over your shoulder all night long!

I'm not sure I'll have anything new, but I'll bring what I have and certainly play along with everybody else. Alison, as soon as you have a central lodging place nailed down, let us know so we can follow-up with our reservations.

OK. I'm taking an extra week off and planning on being there sometime on Saturday. Probably miss the songwriter's clinic.
SWMBO's coming, although she is apprehensive about meeting you people. I guess Waskel, Dave and Karl didn't convince her that folks here aren't that bad. The fact that I seem to buy another guitar after one of these things might be the real reason for her reluctance. Probably only room for one guitar, so it'll probably be the OFC, unless someone else (Brad?) brings one.

OK, Motel 8, Motel 6, America's Best Value Inn, have all around the same rates, between 70 and 90 dollars a night depending on if you have AAA, AARP, or other discount cards. I'll have to call Hideaway Cabins and a couple of other places. You can go online and make reservations. America's Best Value is right across the street from the shop, and they do have three cabins with a queen size bed plus I think three bunk beds for around 150 if anyone wants to go in on it together. Kemo Sabay looks like the best campground. Also remember, I have plenty of floor space here at the shop if anyone wants to "camp" here. If you need a motel or campground, it would be best if you make the reservations yourself so you can use any discount cards, plus you can get the type of room you prefer. (Queen size bed, 2 doubles, whatever.)

I reserved 30 tickets to the concert. If you are going to the workshop your concert ticket is free. If not, the tickets are 12 dollars. (She is charging 15 for the general public.) The cool thing is, she has decided to keep it to only 50 people only for the concert. You'll be liking it.

My guitar collection keeps changing, but as of now I have a 1617 Legend, a 2077LX, the Parlor, a 1587, a 1687, an OFC1, a 1758 Elite 12, an 1115 LEFTY 12, and a bunch of non O's. Actually, the only one that's for sale is the lefty, so all the others will be here, plus who knows what else I'll pick up between now and then. Somebody remind me to start changing strings pretty soon so they'll all be fresh!

Alison ... we were looking at a place called Historic Log Cabins ( http://historiclogcabins.com/ ). Do you know if they are OK and if they are fairly close to town? Seem interesting and fairly inexpensive.

MIB ... Kimby-D will be joining me. She and LadyMIB can talk about our obsessions with DING!s and DING!s. We will likely make the trip in the silver bullet.

It'll carry two cases, with some extra room for a couple of other small items. I'll likely only bring one. A regular carry-on suitcase fits under the front bonnet. Perfect.

Don't. Do. It.

There'll be plenty of guitars there already.

Speaking of which, what is an OFC'07?

I can bring what others might want to sample so let me know ... here are some possible non-dups:

OFC2 Wideneck
JL3 Reissue
Book Elite
1537
K1111 Reissue
EA68 Viper
6759 CL12
2000C Lacewood

I have others too. Also Takamine and Hamer if you want.

If I'm going to be gone for 2 weeks, I'm bringing a guitar. Otherwise, I'll have to buy one on the trip. Since I bought #47RI from Stephen on the last trip, I think SWMBO is going to watch me like a hawk on this trip.
I just updated my signature line so anyone can suggest one of mine.
If the 30th Anniversary in Iffy's list isn't the same as the 04 CL Commemorative, I could bring mine. I'd like to see someone bring an OFC2. I haven't played one. Is the OFC'07 the same as the LAV Koa? If not, I could bring mine. I don't see a Folklore, a 1713 or a Ute. Bringing one of the Ultra GSs would be easiest, but I'll probably get the roof rack anyway. I've used them on Porsches for years. I'll put the golf clubs and other stuff up there and keep the guitar inside.
Maybe if all the people who can bring multiple guitars get a list together, those of us who can only bring one might be able to fill in the gaps.

Alan (alan814) listed that one.

Now that the 'menu' is out, just email me your 'wanna fondles' and I'll update that list as needed. If ya have one on the list and will bring it, email me and I'll delete it from the updates.

With the limited traveling space available, I'm just trying to maximize the desired flavors without dupes.

I've temporarily listed what I have available for ya'll to sample over on the NING site. Just email me if one or two strikes your fancy.

First 'Request' update:

2008C
2009C
2078LE-AS

OFC II

If I'm the Mark that listed the OFC 07, then I meant the LAV Koa. If I'm the only one who intends to bring a LAV Koa, I'll bring that one. If someone else has one they want to bring, I'll bring something else.
Since I'll miss the jam on Friday, I hope the rest of you won't be too tired to stay up late on Saturday/Sunday. If you are, just leave all your guitars in the shop and I'll spend the night there.

I'm sure that after 40 years she knows stuff about you that you don't.
I think I figured out where the 07 OFC confusion started--me. I just noticed that's what I put in my sig line. It's the same as the OFC I, which Brad might be able to bring.
I could bring the LAV Koa, if anyone's interested.

Thanks for the tip, Bobbo. We're booked for four nights at the log cabins. There's a Model A club coming in from Billings who are hogging most of the rooms, so it could be tight there. Better call early. I plan to bring the 1581 30th Anniversary RI.

I've never dressed in leather, but I'm thinking that full leather, a helmet and straddling a Harley for 1000 miles would be a lot more comfortable than 100 miles in the "back seat".

When I was in college, I agreed to carpool on a field trip which meant riding in the back seat of a 911. There were two of us back there, too, and we kept getting in and out most of the day. And we were little people. I could not raise my head up for a week afterwards. I'll take a Harley, any Harley, over the back seat of a 911, unless it is snowing, and even then I'd take the Harley if I had the right gear.

Since it looks like 2 OFCs may be there, I'll either bring the Ute or the LAV Koa. The Ute might travel better. Looks like either will fit in the back trunk with a soft case, so that's the plan for now.

Looks like my wish list is more than covered by the "will bring" list. Wow!

I'll bring the 2080, and I presume Sara will bring the UTE.

If Sara brings her Ute, then I'll bring the LAV Koa. If someone else brings a LAV Koa then I'll bring the 04 Commemorative CL. Heck, maybe I'll just bring the old Matrix. It went with us the last time we were in the Black Hills, 1977.

Say, Alison, do you have a copier at the shop? For those bringing music, lead sheets, etc., we'll need copies, and we can pass the hat to cover your costs for paper, toner, etc. Also, should we bring our own music stands?

This has been a common issue at most jams.

May I suggest an ol' fashion overhead projector?

I tried a PC projector and screen at the Sea Cow Serenade, but the printing was too small (my fault) and it took time to agree/select/project (everybody else's fault ).

With an OHP, just plop down and align the cheat sheet, voilà (assuming senior citizen sized fonts, of course)!

I have another idea. Everybody send me their lead sheets in either Word or as a PDF. I'll print them out, make copies, and bind them in alphabetical order into one jam book for the event. Only three rules . . . (1) put your name on the sheet in addition to the name of the song (in case questions arise), (2) only one song per sheet and one sheet per song, and (3) I'll need them by a date certain to run the copies and bind the packages before I leave. I'm thinking I'll need the sheets no later than June 15th. Also, be reasonable and don't send me 150 songs each. Maybe we should limit the number if it gets too big. I can confirm how many books we'll need with Johnny as the date approaches. Anybody in?

Sounds good. I'll try to find something from the 70s so you youngsters might recognize them.
Iffy, I really appreciate the senior font comment. Karl had this great book of songs, but it was about 6 by 8 and when I got my face close enough to see it, he'd see the back of my head.
Otto's songbook has nice large print.

Pick short songs. The shorter the song, the bigger the font.

OK - I'm in Alison - I'm bringing my daughter Samantha - she is 12 - she knows cowboy chords,
We'll be camping - we're in for Jam session on Friday Night - and put us down for two for the concert. We won't be attending the song writer workshop. We'll do any other jam session or open mic too...Alison, I have a decent PA with all the trimmings for small room set-up - do you need one? Jam session or Concert - Decent stuff - can handle a couple guits and vocals - efx, IPod, Mics, direct boxes - etc. No pressure - just letting you know It is available for the whole weekend if you want/need it. I'll mix too - if the artist uses his own gear - cool - just let me know. Do you need concert $$$ now - or just bring it up with us. Anyone own a cajone?

Chordie has an easy function for changing font size. I think that must have been what Otto used for most of his book. Reprinting his book on both sides of the page is another one of the projects on my list.

OK, I don't have access to an overhead projector so maybe the book thing would be best. I DO have a PA, so there's no need to bring one. And I want to see that Ghia! What year is it? I drove VWs for years. I have owned several bugs, a bus, and a little orange Ghia that was mostly bondo, but what a fun ride!

I got a PM asking what time the workshop and concert will be. At first I thought I could schedule it myself, but Craig got a chance to do a gig in Utah the night before so I'm not sure what time he'll be getting in. I have an email out to him right now. I'll let you know as soon as I get an answer.

Why oh why is it so hard to pin people down? Craig just emailed me back saying he'll be coming up from Denver and can start any time I want him to. It's a 7 hour drive so even if he starts driving at 5AM he won't be here 'til noon. I emailed back telling him to NAME A TIME. He's in Paris right now. Hopefully he'll write back in a few minutes and let me know.

O.k., here's what I can do. We can start with Otto's book (unless he objects). It's a pretty comprehensive volume. I have a few more I'll add. If anybody has anything they want added, send it to me via PM. I also recall that I promised to provide some information to Otto (it was you, wasn't it?) at Amelia, so I'll get it to you early next week.

I can bring a projector and a laptop if you want me to. I have otto's book in PDF, and hundreds more electronically. Mostly just chords, no tab. All we need is a wall to project on and a table. If Otto doesn't object. ;) . Bring your stuff on a USB stick and we're good.

My "stuff" is handwritten in a spiral notebook. I'll bring it just for laughs. I actually had about 10 songs from the 70s that were also in Otto's songbook. I had most of the chords right. This weekend I played a bunch of those old strumming songs that I hadn't played in 30 years. It was a lot tougher when I was trying to play along with the radio, or even a record.

I'll still go ahead and put a Jambook together, although I may edit and delete some of Otto's material as the book is now pretty big and growing by the day. There are a lot of two-page songs and with a few added from my own collection, we're up to 216 songs and over 300 pages. Even double-sided, this will be a monster. If you want something included, send it to me via PM.

Alison, clean out your PM box on a regular basis. You're going to be getting lots of them.
Brad, Otto's book is kind of a monster. I made the mistake of printing it on our home printer, which didn't print on both sides, so I stopped it halfway and printed some on the back pages. Made it really confusing.

Got a Sears car top carrier off Craigslist for $20, but it will cost $400 to attach the $20 car top carrier to the car. So we should have plenty of room for golf clubs, my only Hawaiian shirt, some OFC shirts and some music books, but the guitar will go in a soft case in the trunk. I'm looking forward to seeing one of the original slotheads and comparing it to an OFC. We've got a reservation at the log cabins and already planned the sightseeing for Sunday. I'm working on a couple new Croce songs. I don't care if nobody wants to hear them. Unless anyone really wants to compare 2 or 3 OFC 1s with an original, I'll probably bring the LAV Koa.

If any attendee is interested in adopting a real nice Adamas 1598, I can bring mine that I had planned on selling in the future. Hands on test drive with no $hipping...

Alison, do you have a bass amp at the shop? If so, I can bring a 1453 UB1-K Ultra Bass. Hopefully, someone can play bass for us.

Sunday will be our tourist day also; at least, the Chief Crazy Horse Monument and Mt. Rushmore.

Sunday is going to be tour day, for sure. I'd like to play tour guide if you're interested. Through Wind Cave National Park up to Custer State Park. We'll do the wildlife loop followed by the Needles Highway. Then over to Mt. Rushmore. After that it's up to you. I'd LIKE to take you all up to Spearfish Canyon, but that would make for such a long day. Instead, some of you might want to see Crazy Horse or Jewel Cave. But believe me, the wildlife loop and Needles Highway are the very best part.

We were looking at exactly what you mentioned, but figured one cave was enough, so we picked Wind Cave. We haven't seen Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore in 30 years, so we'd like to see those.
We didn't plan on being able to get up too early on Sunday, but if the others are all jammed out on Friday night, maybe I'll be ready to go early. If not, we were looking at a late morning or noon start and spending the rest of the day winding our way up and spending the night in Rapid City. We wouldn't mind a guide if everyone else agrees to the same schedule. I imagine that touring on those roads with a motorcycle, Porsche (DING) and Yukon might be a bit different, but that's OK.

It looks pretty aerodynamic... in a "lifting body" sort of way.

Mark, that looks great! I quick trip to Maaco and you could have it match the car, then ]admirers would think it was a $1,500 factory accessory.

I already have a more aerodynamic one, but it hangs out so far over the front and back that we couldn't open the back hatch.
Brad, we saw one a couple years ago, same color car with a ski carrier on top painted to match. I think I'll just have Maaco paint the car two tone white and gray to match the carrier.
I wonder what the lift off speed will be. It might not be as fast a trip as the one I made to San Diego, but maybe I won't get a ticket this time.

Mark, make sure that thing is secure! We had one come off the top of our van on a camping trip. Luckily nobody was behind us at 5 am, and the darned thing suffered only minor damage. But sleeping bags are a lot more forgiving than your cargo.

I'm not putting anything special up there. The guitar cases were just a joke, but maybe someday. I'm going to load it up with something disposable and take it out for a test drive while I still have time to take corrective measures. I've had other luggage racks up to pretty high speeds before with no adverse effects except on gas mileage. I think lift may be the biggest concern. I can raise the car up a couple inches by lifting on the carrier.

We're three weeks away from going to the printers with the Jam Book chord sheets. A list of the potential contents follows. If you want something included that is not on the list, please send me the chord sheet, preferably with the largest typeface possible yet still on one page only. Also, this book is already a monster, so if there are songs listed that you think for sure should be deleted, let me know that, too. If the final list is too much, then I'll delete some at my own choosing, those spread over two pages will be the first to be deleted. Of course, I'll print the pages back-to-back, and those two-page songs that do make it to printing, the pages will face each other so there will be no turning a page mid-song. Disregard typos which will be corrected in the final.

Nice job, Prof. That's more songs than I'd ever play, but at least most of them are from my era.
Hey, can anyone borrow or bring an 05 or 07 Collectors or a 2078ES? I'd really like to try out an Ovation with an Engleman Spruce top and, as much as everyone raved about the 07s, it seems like someone would have one to bring along. I'm thinking I might like to have an Engleman Spruce Ovation and I haven't bought a guitar in a year.

Yikes. That's a lotta songs. I hope the plan is to have someone lead and others (like me) can just jam along. Just about every one of those are from the 60's or early 70's and I don't know a lot of those songs well enough. I'd like to play some more current stuff if we can. I'll see what I can pull together and send off to BB.

Is there a schedule of events and/or times yet? When/where are things going to be happening and that kind of stuff.

I could bring an 07, but that's not Engleman. It's bear claw spruce.

Come on, Bobbo. I was looking forward to jammin to the oldies. If you get current, I'll never catch up. I had a 25 year lapse and there wasn't much in there that I'm interested in.
I knew the 07 isn't Engleman. It wasn't on my list, but I just wanted to tell a neighbor what I thought about it. If I could pick one that I'd like to try, it would be the 2078ES and I'd really like to compare it to a 1537.

A few are fine. But we don't want to get to where we have to wear those Richard Simmons shorts and tank tops. Aside: Hey ... is darkbarguitar coming?

I think the comparison between the the 2078ES and the 1537 are fit and finish and materials similarities more than sound. They're different in almost every other way. But that said, when I played the 2078 I was mightily impressed with the way it came out in total. It would be cool to have one there.

I'm all in favor of you not wearing those Richard Simmons shorts and tank top, too, Bobbo. Maybe someday I'll learn some of the electric guitar stuff, but it will probably be oldies when I learn it.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams was in the list. That's pretty new.
Finally, I still have this ridiculous idea that SWMBO will notice that I really like a 2078ES and will tell me that I should get one. She has been bugging me to get a new Boxster instead.

The price of one headlight for a Boxster equals one very very nice Ovation guitar. Pick any model number you like best. :)

How about I just sell you a headlight for the price of a 2078ES? Then I'll replace my headlight for a couple bucks and buy the guitar.

Brad, think you could also list the original artist along with the song title (at least on the TOC)?

Probably could, if it is already included on the sheet. Just means a few more hours of typing, and I might not be able use double columns on the contents page, which then adds another three or four pages to the book.

Not trying to make your job harder....or the print smaller.

I just thought having the OA listed might bring me (and maybe some others) better recognition on some of these tunes.

One winter weekend I went through Otto's book and it took the whole weekend to play just the songs that I knew. Actually, there are quite a few that I know that I don't care to play, but there's plenty of material and most everyone is in the same key that I played it, so it must be right.

"Baby, It's You" was written by Burt Bacharach , Luther Dixon and Hal David (lyrics), and originally recorded in '61 by The Shirelles.

And, oh my... the original song didn't help at all in harnessing my raging hormones! This song still brings back many trans-pubescent memories!!!

So... as we draw closer, who all is coming from the east coast? And how are you getting there?

It's looking like we would hit the road on the afternoon of the 23rd, when Nicky gets out of school and hopefully arrive sometime Friday afternoon/evening.

I was mapping out possible routes. On the way there, I'm looking at going through West Virginia, Lexington, St. Louis, Kansas City, Lincoln NE and on to Hot Springs. On the way back, probably a more northerly route with hopes of being in Chicago by Tuesday for the Guitars of Fire extravaganza.

Thoughts?

Maybe we could caravan on the way back, except we'll be stopping in Iowa to visit relatives and won't get to Chicago till Wednesday or Thursday.
I'll be taking the scenic route over: Craters of the Moon National Monument, the Grand Tetons, then across central Wyoming.

Bill sent me a few more songs that he's added to his song book, which serves as the starting point for the Rocky Raccoon Jam Book. The list follows. I'll still need to cut some from the full list as we're now up to 229 songs, plus I believe there may be a few more coming in.

CAN’T FIND MY WAY HOME, Blind Faith/Steve Windwood
DEAD FLOWERS, Rolling Stones
DEAR MY FANTASY, Traffic
HEARD IT IN A LOVE SONG, Marshall Tucker Band
HEY BABY, Bruce Channel
IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND, Gordon Lightfoot
I’M A MAN, Spencer Davis Group
LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG, Grayson Capps
OUTFIT, Drive By Truckers
PAST THE POINT OF RESCUE, Mick Hanley/Hal Ketchum
POLKA DOT UNDIES, Bowser and Blue
SOULSHINE, Warren Haynes/Gov’t Mule
THE MIDDLE, Jimmy Eat World

I have my flight plan. The silver bullet will fire off from California on Monday the 21st, through the Gold Country, over the Sierras through the Donner Pass and Lake Tahoe/Reno, and across the Northern Nevada desert into Idaho. Then up to my sister's in Bozeman for a couple a days, followed by a backroads blast through Montana, Wyoming, and set down at the Historic Log Cabin Motel in Hot Springs, South Dakota early Friday afternoon. Departing Monday morning for a zoom down through Denver and across the Rockies into Grand Junction, through southern Utah and central Nevada (Area 51 and nukeland) and back into California via Yosemite and the southern Sierras.

This is gonna be fun.

Brad, most of those are not the best of jam tunes anyway so I vote to cut them.

Maybe make a pdf file of them available to those who want to download it and print it out for themselves.

just my 2 cents.

I didn't see anything on the list of 2 pagers that I couldn't live without, although I kind of like Me and Bobby McGee as a strumming/singalong tune.
I haven't figured out the route back from Chicago, probably just the fastest Interstate route. Maybe I'll figure out how to post the Google map of the route over.
Mike, we were going to drop down into Iowa to visit relatives in Cedar Rapids, but might be able to travel with you till then. We're thinking about spending Sunday night in Rapid City, so we could have Sunday to see what we wanted in the Black Hills.

I just realized I've been calling the 2010 Collectors a 2078ES, thinking it was Engleman spruce, when it is really a 2078LE/AS for Adirondack Spruce. There's one for sale on ebay. Bobbo, swing by Helena when you're up in Montana and pick it up for us to try out, OK?
I found out last weekend what happens when a Silver Bullet hits a coyote. I acquired a new skill that I hope I don't need to use anymore--using a lever to bend the radiator away from the front tire. It was a friend's car. The silver color matched the duct tape we used to hold the front end on. Duct tape is going in the tool kit for the trip.

I just want to warn you folks that Chicago is a good place to avoid unless you absolutely HAVE to go there. Even on the by-pass during a "low traffic" time of day, it takes FOREVER to get through. And if you have any unforeseen problems that hold you up so that you happen to get there during rush hour, expect to take FOUR HOURS to get through.

I'm spending a week in St. Charles, west of Chicago. SWMBO needed to be there, so Hot Springs is just a stop along the way. Mike will have to deal with getting through or around. I drove from Milwaukee a few years ago, cut down to I-80 through Illinois and Iowa and didn't have any traffic issues.

My only goal on the way back is to try and catch Dobro and Guitars of Fire playing at the festival in Chicago on Tuesday.

We are staying in SD on Sunday night and leaving on Monday morning. We're planning on sightseeing with the group on Sunday. Mark, I don't know if the minivan can keep up with the Silver Bullet anyway :-).

I'm not sure I'll catch Dobro, but might catch the one on Wednesday night. SWMBO has to start working on the convention set up on Thursday.
The Silver Bullet is Bobbo's. SWMBO's is Carmon Red, another name for burgundy. I've been passed by a lot of minivans, which is a bit scary, and I plan on just going with the flow across South Dakota. I'm sure I'll be able to tell that the excargo is up on the roof.

Funny, I always find some racecar wannabe driving a minivan that I can sneak behind to run interference. Next best is a kid in a pickup, usually with a barking dog in the back.

Brad,

The 'cut' list looks OK. There's plenty in da book to keep us busy. Plus I'm sure there will be some impromptus mixed in.

I can provide git pickups and deliveries along these routes:

Well, I suppose I could bring the 6/12 twins but I would hate to spoil and ruin everyone who only has "regular neck" guitars to go back home to.

Of course that would mean I couldn't bring original wideneck #57 slothead and/or the only known Adamas Acoustic Proto Bass in the world (thanks KK).

Not sure what I will ultimately bring but it will have strings.

Wellllll...one COULD say that the webcast represents a way in which those of us who can't be there physically can be there virtually.

Soooooooooooo...who's doing the webcast again?

It's pretty easy...just a webcam on a laptop (frequently built-in to the laptop) and some software...

It would be a huge file, but possibly. Most are already single pdf docs, so it would just be a matter of creating one large combined document, or several segments. Let's revisit the topic after the Jam.

So does that mean you'll have more room for guitars? There might be time and time to bring the OFC II.
BTW, Iffy, any other updates on attendees and guitars? Just a couple more weeks to go.

I'm in the midst of another love affair with the 04 Commemorative CL and could bring it, instead of the LAV Koa, if someone else brings a LAV Koa. This is getting complicated, especially when 2 of us are driving cars that won't hold enough guitars.

In addition to the 1581 30th Anniv RI, I intend to bring at least one SSB, probably the VXT custom, and a few amps, too.

One of you Jersey people should kidnap Al and bring him along with one of the 2078LE-ASs.
I could probably cram in an Ultra GS if anyone is interested, but it might be more headache than it's worth.

On second thought, forget about kidnapping Al. Just kidnap a couple of 2078LEs. They don't need as much feeding and take up less room.

Professor, Christiane will be here with a super shallow. It's basically a 6868, but with a matte finish. Really nice guitar. Jarrett will be here too with his '02 Collector's.

Is Al coming? That would be too cool.

Is anyone bringing percussion instruments? Maybe a cajon too? No way for me to fit one in the car, but I can stow some small stuff.

I can fit an electric too if anyone is interested. Deacon 12 Deluxe? Mahogany Viper? Hamer Newport? Hamer Mirage. Let me know.

Will there be a bass there? Acoustic or otherwise? I think there's a few of us that can play a little.

I can definitely bring a cajon. Mine is mic'ed up internally so could be plugged in if the sound needs boosting a bit.

.......I've got the Adamas Bass I suppose I could try to bring
(depending on room.....sucker takes up A LOT of space just like the 2080D 12 string).

Guys? It's a music store. There may not be an acoustic bass, but there will be an electric bass and a bass amp.

Bobbo, if you're going to bring a Hamer, I'd love to try the Newport. AND if anyone has a UKII that they'd like to bring...I just want to warn you that I will do my best to try talking you into selling it to me. (Jarrett NEEDS a UKII.)

Help! Is anyone who's coming knowledgeable about the inner workings of the old Vipers? My bridge pick-up has gone deaf, and is not picking up anything at all. (Most disconcerting, because I was half-thinking that maybe I'd like to sell it to an appreciative person...) If no one has any experience with them, I'll leave it home and try to find somone to tweak it after I get back...but if someone does, please, let me know...
I won't be bringing too big a selection--we're renting a sedan, not a semi.
5 more sleeps, and I leave for Ohio!!!! :D :D :D

Probably a mechanical issue with wiring or a switch. The selector switch may have failed, or a wire may have become broken or unsoldered from a connection.

Karen,

I'll have a multi-meter with me and can bring soldering equipment. If ya have room, bring the patient.

Like Steve said, it's more than likely an easy fix.

Geeze, by this time next week, I'll be a third of da way out yonder...

Thank you, Johnny; I'll be sure to bring the patient along.
Right now, I'll be bringing Gertrude, Betsy (the Patriot), and the Viper. If I can figure out how to bring Jewel, I will--but I'm not sure how "Ethel" will feel about shepherding all those cases in and out.....

I'll bring the iDea preamp, but would appreciate it if someone else brought one, too. Mine has a bunch of noise when record or playback is being used and I want to compare. It works well as a guitar preamp, but I have a bunch of those.
We're starting to figure out how to pack everything. I think I'll start with the guitar and then just work everything else in around it.

Jam Books are completed, but they're not perfect. I went through some of the songs I know last night and discovered a few inaccurate chords here and there on the charts, but its nothing we can't correct on the fly. Have your pencils out and at the ready.

Got it. I'm just bringing the iDea along separately. It doesn't take much room. I'll just have to remember to bring it back.
Barely got to 60 yesterday, but it's supposed to finally start hitting the 80s on a regular basis. Hope it moves over to the Black Hills by next week.

I emailed Mark that I have a new indabox iDea that I'll bring. So if you hadn't planned on bringing Sara's, we got it covered.

One day I'll decide which 'O' to put it in...

Duh! SWMBO's already got her clothes spread out on the floor, while I've been trying to figure out how to best carry the guitar stuff. Priorities. I'll throw a couple T-shirts in the car somewhere after we figure out how to get all her clothes and toiletries in with my guitar and golf clubs.
I wish I had time to practice, but I know that as soon as I try to play something with someone else possibly listening, my mind will go blank anyway.

Making lists and starting to pack at least a week ahead of time is pretty much the norm. For me it's the night before or morning of. I generally forget something and she usually has a bunch extra.

Thanks, TRboy. I'm hoping the weather gets better! The past three days in a row we have had three seperate hail storms each day. Last night we had golf ball size and a bunch of cars in town had their windshields shattered and are severely dented. Not trying to scare you folks, but want to warn you, when you get here, find at least a tree to park under. (There is only one overpass in town to park under.)

As a matter of fact, I'm usually open 'til 5 on Sundays but I don't think I'm going to make it today. The golf ball sized hail yesterday was termed "large hail". Today they are predicting "VERY large hail", and we're under a tornado watch. It's getting very dark and windy, so I'll be leaving to get my car in the garage. :(

Iffy, it's a dry 54°. It'll feel wonderful. But there's nothing wrong with a little antifreeze just in case.

Rain is OK. I don't like hail, though. Tried out the car top carrier today on the Cayman and it seems secure up to the speed I was able to get up to. I didn't test it at Interstate speeds, but it should be fine.
Lots of things to do before we leave. I just found two broken sprinklers this afternoon that I'll have to repair. Fortunately, it's raining, so the grass isn't dying.
Better go start packing.

As to a schedule/program... never had one for a jam, other than AI.

BTW Steven, are you and Lia doin' another duet? The last one I saw was beyond awesome!

The workshop will be starting at noon on Saturday. The concert is at seven. The jam session on Friday starts whenever we feel like it. The folks from our local newspaper will be here Friday to take pictures and do a story.

The annual Arts and Crafts Festival will be going on all weekend too. That is right down the street and there will be all kinds of food and stuff for sale, and live music. You will all probably want to check that out while you're here.

Due to some unforseen events occurring, I will not be making the trip after all. Bummer! I hope you all have a great time. Play a song for me, and, if there are any liquid refreshments, drink one for me.

There is another low priced motel that wan't open when summer started, but I went by the other day and they are now open for business. They are advertising a single for $39! It's called Riverside Inn, and their phone number is (605)745-5191.

We got thunder last night but no hail. They are however, predicting possibly severe thunderstorms for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Doesn't mean we'll get them, but it's possible. The good thing about all this rain though, is the Hills are greener than I've seen them in years.

Hopefully we'll be arriving some time friday afternoon.

We'll be arriving Thursday evening and staying at the America's Best which looks to be nearly across the road from Alison's shop. We got some kind of cabin there.

I only have one vehicle I trust for that distance and speed, so let's get the hail banned for the weekend!

Safe travels, everyone. We won't join you until Saturday. We didn't think we could get away early enough on Friday, so we made a hotel reservation in Jackson, Wyoming. If I wake up at 4 like I did this morning, we may get there about the time you all get up.
I don't know about the most beautiful place in America, but it should be on the list. I can't say much for the stretch going from there to the Midwest, though.

I hope to run into the other Mark at the concert or after. I'd like to show SWMBO one of the original slotheads instead of the "damn reissue" that I've got. We won't get out of here till 3 tomorrow. Just a bit too far to make the Friday jam session, so we'll see you sometime Saturday afternoon.

See you Saturday evening then...I really like the reissues too - they had 30 years to hone the craft - it appears one other original might be there too...if so - you'll get to experience how the originals are just slightly different,(Cliff describes them like homemade cookies)mine is there for the playing - so help yourself when you see it...

Karen and Ellen, Johnny and Patty, and Professor BB just left to go eat at Wooly's. I have to stay here because I have to give a lesson tonight. Looks like there will be a lot of action at Historic Log Cabins tonight - they have set up a gazebo for us and Brad hung an Ovation banner. I'll hang a sign on the door for any late comers tonight so they'll know where we're at. Oh, this is going to be fun...

Everyone is going to go crash now after long days of driving. I'm going to go home and sleep now too. (Been up since about 3:30) But I thought I'd write for a few minutes because Johnny has gone back to his motel to bring me a cooler full of - SEAFOOD!!!!!

Sleep tomorrow night so you can be rested up for Saturday night. If I lived on the other side of the State, I'd join you tomorrow night, but these States are too wide. Tomorrow night the Tetons and Saturday the Black Hills.
I'm bummed Bobbo can't make it. I don't play Ziggy, but I'll toast you with the others.

Story of my life--day late and lots of dollars short. 20+ people is too crowded for me anyway, but I expect that the 2 of us crammed in the car with 2 weeks worth of stuff will enjoy some other company when we get the chance. The weather is finally nice here, so I hope we aren't leaving good weather for bad.

It's 20 some odd (odd?!) people one minute, 10 the next. Some have gone down to check out the Arts and Crafts Festival for a bit, some are up in the Hills right now and will be back this evening, some are locals who can only stay an hour or so. What an AMAZING selection of fine guitars we have assembled! There's a tourist here who owns a Balladeer but brought a Breedlove, and he and his wife have decided to spend the day with us. And we even have some BANJO music goingf on. (Eat your hearts out.) Well, I'm done eating. Time to go play a longneck...

I'm about to leave (I know I keep saying that) with the LAV Koa, so I hope no one else brought one. See you tomorrow.
Woody, this group doesn't care what we look like, just what our guitars look and sound like. I wouldn't mind Nancy Wilson got involved in the club, though.

The workshop was great. Much more constructive than others I've been to. The concert is coming up in a few minutes. Pictures will be coming soon.

The songwriting workshop was awesome. It alone made the trip worthwhile. All the rest was just icing on the cake.

Epic weekend. Thanks to Alison for putting together an amazing get together, and thanks to all who attended.

I left this morning with a dozen new best friends.

More tomorrow including pictures.

We just got back from touring the Hills. Johnny and Patty, Karen and Ellyn, Mike, Mikey, and Nicky. Saw buffalo and antelope and bighorn sheep, a mama and baby mountain goat, plus assorted deer and prarie dogs. And we did the Needles Highway. Then on to Mount Rushmore, then Crazy Horse, then back into Custer for Steak and Ribs (and a really good vegetable lasagna). It is SO HARD saying goodbye! I finally met some of my favorite people in person, and now they are leaving. But I know they'll be back for the Second Annual Rocky Racoon Memorial Black Hills OFC Gathering. In the meantime, I'll hold down the fort.

I want to thank everyone for making this one of the best weekends of my life. It's going to be hard to get back to my normal day to day after this. I can't wait 'til next year!

Iffy was one of them!

He and Crimsonlake took pictures, and maybe some of the others. Hopefully they'll post some when they get home to fill out the story more.

A few thoughts to share now that I've caught up on some sleep and gotten settled in a bit.

First, I'd trade places with Alison in a heartbeat. What a nice little town Hot Springs is, with a sense of community in addition to the beauty of the area.

Second, Alison is a real asset to the area. She has brought more than a music store to the town, she has created a hub of music and nurtured a love of music in the locals. Folks certainly felt comfortable wandering in and joining in with all of us "outsiders". Alison's "kids" Jarrett, Kristin, and Dusty are talented and seem like genuine great people.

Third, I got to play some of the best and most beautiful guitars with some of the best and most beautiful people. I'm sure the list will be incomplete, but there was the OFC I, OFC 2, #43, a couple of Alison's old Adamas, Mark's LAV Koa, a 2007BCS, Iffy's Adamas 12 SMT with Ovation on the headstock, StephenT's longneck 6 and 12, Karen's Patriot (should have brought that one home with me), ProfBB's Adamas II cutaway (I think that is the correct description), and various other wood topped O's.

Fourth, having played all of these great guitars it is clear that I have assembled a perfect collection for my tastes, style, and uses. There are plenty of guitars that would be nice to add to the collection but none that I would exchange one for one.

All of the OFC members were a joy to meet and jam with. The local musicians really added a nice dimension to the experience, too.

Don't miss the next Rocky Raccoon Memorial Black Hills jam!

I just got to the inlaws in Iowa. I was thinking the same thing as FlySig. Every tourist town should have a music store. I bet I could blow my whole retirement fund on one.
The OFC is just full of great folks. Sorry I couldn't spend more time.
Probably should have gone on Alison's tour. An hour in a cave with a bunch of strangers was a bit much, but the rest of the Black Hills is fantastic. So were the guitars. In addition to what Steve mentioned, I really liked Mike's 05 Collector's. I've been hearing great things about them since I joined the site, but this is the first time I've been able to tell you guys you were right. Wish I could have tried a 2010 Collector. SWMBO asked what the next one will be, and I'm thinking that will be it, but now I know I'd really like the 05.
Sorry we didn't get any pictures. Loved both of Craig Caruthers' cds we got after his concert. Very entertaining.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said. The three Jersey boys had a fantastic time in the hills. It was great to meet some new faces - Stephen and Lea, Mark and Linda, Allison, ElginAcres and Sam, Patty (Johnny's wife) and Ellie (Karen's sister) as well as the local crowd. Of course it was wonderful to see the old crowd as well - Johnny and Steve and the girls and Brad (ProfBB who I'd briefly met at the last tour).

Allison was a fantastic hostess and the locale was 2nd to none.

We're currently in Sioux Falls, Iowa (where you at Mark?). On the way here today, we toured the Badlands... cool place! More driving tomorrow and Wednesday.

Thanks again Allison!

Thanks so much for making this possible, Allison. Her music store is more than a place to buy stringed instruments and related gear. This is a meeting place, like the old general store of yesteryear. Locals just stop by to visit, play a little, maybe sing a little, then return to their busy lives. Some would stop by during their lunch hour. Others would hang around most of the day. The local teens were great and Allison is a wonderful influence on them as well as the entire community. The locals would join in the jams and were welcomed by the group with open arms. A special thanks to Karen for providing a good bass line literally by ear during our Friday jam session. The weather was excellent, and the only rain we saw was a few drops sitting on the car after Craig's Saturday evening concert. Next year. I'd like to combine this with a full week of vacationing in the area. A few days just doesn't give it justice. There is much to see and do in this part of South Dakota, and Hot Springs is a beautiful and convenient place to set up a base. Although o.k. for the most part, the Log Cabins where most of us stayed were not without issues. The owners were new and didn't really have a handle on the condition of the cabins, nor was their bookkeeping in good order. Nonetheless, it was very scenic and we all got by. Thanks again, Allison, for hosting a terrific event.

Mark, there's an '05 in the for sale section that the owners been trying to sell or trade for as long as I can remember. From another happy '05 owner.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed themselves so much. Congratulations Alison.

Now it's time for everyone to book their flights for Brisbane in November.

I'm in Cedar Rapids, Mike, but you're probably through Iowa by now.
Muzza, I'm aware of the 05 for sale, but I'm thinking that one per year is good and the came out with that 2010 Collector this year that really has me intrigued.

If that is the 2010 collectors that Dave had at Moody's over the NAMM weekend, it is VERY NICE!

Johnny - glad you guys made it home ok. Wow.. that's alot of miles. We pulled in last night at around 8:30 pm - 3,847 miles. We toured the Badlands on monday - stayed in Sioux City, Iowa, then Dayton, OH on tuesday.

Everyone talks about Iowa being so flat and "corny" but I must say, it doesn't hold a candle to Illinois! I thought it would never end. I was happy to see the hills of Pennsylvania again yesterday.

First of all, a deep heartfelt thanx to Alison for a fabulous gathering! All of her passions for music, Ovations, her ‘kids’, the locals and the surrounding countryside were highlighted and enjoyed while we were there.

Next, a special thanx to Brad (Professor BB) for the Black Hills Jam song book; an awesome adaptation that was crucial to the participants.

It was great seeing ol’ friends, whether I had met them before or not. The younglin’s were a pleasure to behold. Super kids, all!

Hopefully, without repeating the comments previously posted, here are some of my observations in random order:

-I really had no grand expectations prior to the workshop, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. So did Patty. Craig did a super job in suggesting methods to generate the creative juices and covered some structure formats. His ‘concert’ was a hit in that he used humor, life stories and that “Hey, I’m having fun too” attitude.
-Ellie, Karen’s sister, what a trooper. Sweetness runs in that family.
-Karen and then Alison blew me away with their songs at the last shop gathering.
-Loved the ‘local color’ of Alison’s regulars.
-Steven’s bari was a hit. What a grand guitar.
-Nothin’ like shaking hands with OFC members for the first time; hugs on the way out…
-One highlight was the baby mountain goat at Needle Rock (pics later) during Alison’s tour.
-Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument are once-in-a-lifetime musts. You could spend a day just at the CHM for the Native American Museum.
-Arrived with the Folklore and 1597. Left with the Folklore, TJ’s 5741 Parlor (yessss!) and Karen’s Viper (a pleasent surprise). The 1597 is still out yonder awaiting a knowledgeable touri$t.

OK, time for a break. I’ll probably add more later, especially some pics.

But, the bottom line is always the same; the only down side of attending the jams is leaving!

Again Alison, THANX!

Just caught my ‘second wind’ this evening and had to add some more observations…

Steve and Brad nailed it all with their posts! Some folk like the big cities and all the ‘culture’ there. But I’ll take that small town, know and care for thy neighbor and have a positive influence in your community attitude. Hot Springs reminds me of my home town as a younglin’, where if ya did sumpin’ wrong, the news got home before you did!

elginacres’ Ghia brought back some horrific memories of the one I bought for my eldest daughter (she just HAD to have one) for graduation. Got to admit that his is really sweet! Did ya ever let Sam drive that puppy?

Mark’s $20 yard sale carrier reminded me of the shuttle on its 747 transport. Kinda tough when ya spend 20 times the cost for da mounting hardware. That’s not even counting when ya wonder if a 12 pak will fit in da ‘trunk’…

Then, it’s kinda embarrassing when ya lock your keys in your vehicle after unloading da gear and ya forgot sumpin’… Right Brad…?

BTW, the kids were awesome! If I had to pick a favorite aspect of the jam, it’s the wonderful youth that participated.

I’ll post some pics tomorrow after I cut some CDs for the attendees. Pssst, Stephan...

To all our members or any lurkers, ya can’t do any better than attending an Ovation jam! It’s the most fun ya can have with your clothes on. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, what a fantastic family!

I got home today, 4023 miles or so after I started (Ellyn and I went west to Rocky Mountain National Park after we left Ali's, and came across 70 from Denver afterwards--Blue Springs, MO to Warren, OH in one day. Kansas sure didn't look that big on the map.........)
The words of "This Land Is Your Land" kept echoing through my head as one new vista opened up to another--how wonderfully varied our country is, how incredibly diverse the landscapes. I appreciate it so much more, now--even the little state I live in has a beauty all its' own; for, after all, "there's no place like home."
Special memories? Meeting my dear friend and "sister-under-the-skin" Alison for the first time after months of anticipation. Finally being introduced to Johnny's very special Patty. Playing bass underneath the Professor's fluid lead lines. Seeing the camaradie develop between those who had come along for the ride with someone else. Watching the kids all go out to bowl together, and how well they related to each other. Steaks at Woolly's. The Needles Highway--which I prefer to the Rockies. Ellyn and I trying to find Cascade Falls and driving to within about a mile of Nebraska (how were we to know that "Cascade Falls Rest Area" was the point of interest, and not just a place to pull over?? We Jersey Girls are used to New York-style hype, I guess...)
Playing a very special little mandolin...which won't be in South Dakota much longer. :D :D

Karen,

Ya did kick some azz on da bass! I still say that there needs to be a bass player at every jam...

Yes, what a country!!!

Be sure to check your email...

Oh, BTW, Steve's mini 12er from Woody was one of the neatest gits I've seen! For some reason, I never got to plug it in. I'm really kickin' my butt for not adopting it! Very unique configuration...

We were packing gear to take to the concert and, well, I ran out of hands so down went the keys, then the hatch, then my spirit as soon as I realized the keys were still in the car. Alison said there weren't any locksmiths in town but that she 'knew a guy.' He drives up maybe 5 minutes later and had the car unlocked within seconds with his own make-shift equipment. I just love the can-do attitude of small town America. God Bless the malls and intercity freeways, but you can keep 'em.

Johnny, for some reason about 2/3 of my pics came out fuzzy. Gonna have to check the camera and settings out.

I posted the one that were decent and if you want them for the CD just go to my OFC "social" and grab them (3-5mb each).

Glad that everyone had a great time: we moved that week. We are still in the middle of getting everything from our home to this new parsonage...going up again to day to make a run with some gear/stuff/boxes...and I have the obligatory lawn duties to preform...
I spent seven years traveling the western half of the country while playing gigs...incredible beauty and landmarks that you will not soon forget,,,glad the hear that everyone made it back home in good shape.(iffy; I'm proud of you!!! lol)
Alison: Way to go! Wish we could have been there...maybe next time!!!

Maybe next year for me too (all of you have been warned :) ). It certainly looks like everyone had a great time.

It was nice looking at the pictures in the other thread and finally being able to put a "face to the names".

Just posted a few pics on the 'Gathering' forum.

Note to Karen and Mike, if you can send me your tour pics, I'll include them on the photo CD. I'll separate the photos into Jam and Tour directories.

Anyone else have pics; Mark and Mark?

Stephan, I copied most of your pics for the CD. Thanx!

We left the camera up in the cabin Saturday night, so don't really have any pics of the gathering. We have a couple of the cabins and our tour. Wish we'd have gone with you guys. Alison was right, Wind Cave wasn't too exciting and we didn't see any mountain goats when we did the Needles highway. They sure built up the entrance to Mt. Rushmore since we were there last and Crazy Horse was just a vague outline on the mountain then.

Nobody asked for it until I arrived. In hindsight, I should have.

Hi all, Samantha and I had a great time blending a trip for part OFC and fastpitch softball...Alison - thanks for hosting - the store was perfect, prof- the book is great, stephen - the twins were great - and it was good to see Leah (sp) again, Caruthers was really funny - "What a Load", Iffy great to finally meet you - Crimson and Mark you too, FlySig great to meet you and your daughter...I'll catch the flipside of this one next year too. Samantha says high to all - it was her first jam ever - of any type...go figure - she's 12 years old and wants a sunburst elite 12 for herself now...there goes the credit card balance. I don;t think I've ever seen stucco painted silver before - interesting bookstore motif....the town was great.

Mark,

It was amazing how you and Sam flowed in and out of the festivities and still were a memorable part of da jam. Dual tasking at it's best...

BTW, what a great win for SC in the CWS; exciting final game!

Finally made it back today after 2 weeks and about 3500 miles. One hailstorm on the way back put a couple dents in the Cayman. The cargo carrier protected the top and only cost a couple miles per gallon. Seems like a long time ago that we left the Black Hills.
It was in the mid 90s when we got back today, but still better than 80s and 100 percent humidity in Chicago.
When's the next one?

50% is high. It's 40% now and still a bit too muggy for me. Linda enjoyed the jam, but made sure I noticed she was the only non-guitar playing spouse who sat through the jam on Saturday. She gets a few points for holding the jam book for me, but points are meaningless when the game has been won.
We really enjoyed the Craig Caruthers cds as we were driving across the plains.

OK, I need to set a deadline for your pics to be included on the BHJ photo CD. I'll start 'burning' Monday. So ya have through this weekend to get 'em to me if you wish.

Another small world story. I wore my Old Boise Guitar Store shirt to the Craig Carothers concert in Hot Springs and he said he had just been to Boise the week before. Today I paid my weekly visit to Old Boise Guitar and told the owner what Craig said. Turns out the owner had attended Craig's private concert in Boise along with a workshop on songwriting.
If I had known that, I could have stayed here, skipped the Black Hills gathering and worked an extra week. I'm glad I didn't know he was going to be here. If the Old Boise Guitar guy was into Ovations (he's not), I'd try to get him to arrange a gathering for next year. Alison did a great job.

Say, Iffy. Before you start burning, have you thought of adding the Professor's jam book PDF files to the photo CD? Call it "bonus material".

Dale,

Great idea! I had not considered that, in that each OFC attendee received a hard copy.

But, I can include it if anyone wants a 'file copy'.

Thanx!

Side note: Other than insuring proper photo orientation, I'll not edit or re-size any. I'll leave this up to the recipients.
