OK, I know this will elicit groans from the elder statesmen of the board... but I need to change the battery in my 1982 Adamas 1688 and for the life of me I can't suss the way the battery box door is supposed to open.

Back in the day (early 80's) when I had my first one, I didn't use it plugged in very much and never needed to open the man-hole cover for any reason. Then on later guitars, they all had OP style pre-amps where changing the battery was a snap.

I can see the black and red twisted wires running into a black box (I assume holds the battery...) but how exactly does this box open. I don't want to force it...

And yes, I am prepared to be flayed alive with neubee razzing... So a specific reply please, then do your worst, lol

The back cover of the black box (the side farthest from the bowl) slides off. Try one direction and the other. It's usually pretty tight. If you have a two box config, it's the larger of the two that has the battery in it.

Alternatively, sometimes it's easier to remove the knobs, remove the lock washers and slide out the whole bloody mess so at least you can see what you're dealing with. Also give you the opportunity to clean under the knobs.

I kind of thought it might be a sliding door (up towards the back...), but it must be pretty damn tight as it didn't want budge.

Hope the battery hasn't corroded and 'welded' the door shut, lol.

somewhat later...

OK, got it off. Thanks so much for the expert advice, Gallerinski... much appreciated!!

FAQ doesn't mention the old 2 knob metal boxes with internal slide covers.

Dave - my original 2-knobber Adamas I has the waist screw holding the battery compartment, which has the sliding top. Same configuration on my stack-knob Custom Legend. Was there an earlier configuration w/o a screw holding the battery compartment to the waist?

From the FAQ:

"The older pre-amps with just one or two knobs (stacked or separate) on the side or top of the guitar will have a separate screw, usually in or near the waist, that holds a metal battery compartment. On round-hole Ovations, you'll need to loosen or completely remove the strings, reach inside the guitar, grab the battery compartment, and with the other hand turn the screw about 1/4 to 1/2 turn to the left. The battery compartment should then come loose, and you can pull it out of the sound hole far enough to slide the top open and replace the battery. Make careful note of the battery pole orientation before you take out the old battery, and make sure the new battery goes in the same way with respect to positive and negative terminals."

Older Adamas don't have that. Your was Version 3

Version 1 - battery is clipped to the hatch door
Version 2 - battery is part of the internal box with slide cover
Version 3 - battery is a separate box held by waist screw
Version 4 - battery has separate slide door on waist
Version 5 - OP style

Good info Dave. Admins should include that in the FAQ.

WOW!! Now I'm really impressed (and feel a lot less 'neub-ish', lol)...

Seems like my battery change brought to light a seemingly obscurre bit of ADAMAS history...

I nominate Gallerinski for the 2010 'Obi Wan' award, lol

It's easy enough to remember- the battery box cover always slides toward the wires.
