Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Mothership comes through yet again! I can't believe I actually have this BEAUTIFUL instrument in my little amateur hands. The pictures tell the aesthetics story, but the actual specs will give you an idea of the tone.
It's a figured Redwood topped, non-cutaway, 12-fret, 1 3/4 inch nut, OP-pro studio, deep-bowl of tone goodness. Absolutely nourishing to the soul! Acoustically, just try to imagine a cedar nylon string with a little more bass and a LOT more sustain. It's well balanced throughout the tonal spectrum and, with the tortoise binding and abalone purfling, just dares you not to look while you listen.
I've been grumping a little lately in a just-my-luck kind of way about facing two surgeries this summer that will severely curtail my guitar playing. But when you get something like this, you just have to count your blessings. (Not to mention get motivated to recuperate ASAP.)
So enjoy the pics. The clouds were seriously active in the mid-Hudson Valley this afternoon. You'll find more pics on my ning page at this link:

I like an abalone trimmed nylon string. I had that done to my 1773LX. |

I like an abalone trimmed nylon string. I had that done to my 1773LX. Nothing against them, but it's not a contour. I like the deep bowl best, maybe because I've been playing them for so long and I'm used to them.
John and I went round and round about the bridge. I wanted something other than the traditional square-block type. I think this was John's idea, and I trusted his judgment about it. I'm just a llliiiiiiittle concerned that it might groove too much on the leading edge. If it does, I may have to jerry-rig a tougher leading edge into it, but that's well into the future. I also meant to put a black PU assembly in it and need to get one now.
With the bracing, you got me. I made no specification. When I get a chance, I'll check it with a mirror and let you know.
As far as all of the questions about its origins. It is built to my specs in every way. I cannot compliment John's and Kim's professionalism and patience enough. They went WAY beyond stellar customer service throughout this process.
Of course, that only encourages me to test their patience further in the future eh? ;) |

I don't know how you feel about them but you could use ball-end nylon strings (what the bridge is made for....) if you're worried about grooving the bridge.
And I agree with TJ....wind dem string properly! ;) |

The (tie) strings WILL groove that style bridge!
Someone had put nylon strings on my Folklore before I got it....
....I don't know how long they used it that way but you can see the damage! |

Before I get a reputation I don't deserve (Although there are probably others that I DO deserve.), please be aware that the strings were wound like that at the factory. I considered re-doing them before the pics, but I was racing approaching thunderstorms. It was raining buckets less than an hour after the pictures were taken. |

I especially like the truss rod cover! I called John not two weeks ago with the idea of a matching TRC. Considering the guitar was pretty much done and the fact that I'm pretty sure I heard his eyes roll heavenward for patience with amateur guitar hacks and their last-minute brainstorms, he displayed considerable aplomb saying, "Lemme check and see if we have a piece of scrap redwood to use."
He found one with an hour.
Tain't better service nowhere! |

I just finished fishing around with my fingers as my little mirror is at work. It's A-braced. (My favorite. How did they know? )

I don't think I've ever seen an A braced nylon string before. But I'm open to the concept. A bracing works so well on steel strings.
I gotta play that thing someday. Or maybe not. Wouldn't want to grow dissatisfied with my Custom 1773LX...... |

"I've got to admit, the more I think about it, the more I think I'll need to reinforce the leading edge of the bridge to prevent grooving. (I don't like ball-end nylon strings because there is still a small part of me that stubbornly clings to tradition, and I never know when it will rear its withered little head.) I'm just not sure the best way to do it. Suggestions?" |

...if you define "better" as "winding the strings right."
See, it bugs me too. Just not enough to change out brand new strings. :p ;) |

My sentiments exactly...the guitar store most local to me is Daddy's Junky Music, and I have had conversations with them about why they have been going increasingly low-end. Invariably the answer is that the market's tough out there, they don't sell, etc. But they DO take them occasionally in trade, and I have seen guitars from $1,500 to $2,500 appear in there from trade-ins. THOSE guitars RARELY last there more than a week.
I have to believe that Patch's gorgeous custom job would be gone just as soon as the first shopper able to swing it and play it, saw it. |

I swiped the idea from the 2002 collectors which has a cool looking cherry TRC to match its top. John found precisely what I wanted. Truly, I couldn't be more pleased. |
