Besides, the black ones always sound the best.

Damon, it is highly worthy of your expertise in photography...too bad we're so far away...true that the peg-head and heel laminates are hidden on the -1 and -5 but just check out the figure in the Epi's and the Fingerboard...and there is a lot to be said for Black and Gold!!! Very elegant!!
These pic's were somewhat hastily done...I was gone until late in the day: and this wasn't due until tomorrow or Sat...Surprise!!!
I wanted to get it posted so all could enjoy...thanks for the good wishes...
Leslie held this for me for almost 6 months...she knew what I was going thru and waited until I was well enough to really enjoy it! Very appreciated!!
I haven't seen a -5 The only other one I have seen was in a picture with Steve Sutton playing one in his old band... |

This one is coming to the next get together! |

| Pretty guitar. I thought you already had a 1537-5? Does this one sound different? |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Nope, I've owned several black guitars including an 87C-5 and a 1537-4 several years ago, but this is my only 1537-5...it's a keeper: to my ear, it sounds better than any Ovation I have owned including both of the aforementioned guitars. The several that have heard it all seem to agree... Incredible sustain, bass, and clarity make this guitar stand out from the rest by a considerable distance. |

Location: Tennessee | I saw something interesting in your pictures ... bridge bolts? When did they start putting these on the 1537's? Mine from early in the run doesn't have them. And is your binding maple? Again, my early one is walnut? Lastly, does this one have the lamination around the sound holes? Just curious to know if they changed construction partway through the run ... |

Glad you like it so much but something exceptional must have happened to it over the last couple years.
I used to own that guitar and while it was very nice it was by NO MEANS the best sounding Ovation in my herd.
Guess we listen and hear things differently but my 1547 was a much better sounding guitar and so was the very special sunburst 87C that I sold to Serge.
and the tobacco burst 1537 was probably the best of the bunch!

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Bobbo: I have no idea: this is original to the guitar as much as I can determine...bridge looks to be the same since new: no sign of ever being replaced...Walnut binding is the same as was on the -4...the light in the pictures makes it washed out looking in places...As to the lamination, I'll post a picture...
Stephen: as to the tone, I stand by my statement...it sings and sounds wonderful...much better than the 87C-5 and the Book Elite although that was a great sounding O...the 1537-4 was awesome as well and it would take a side by side comparison to determine TDS...although the -5 top is solid: never cracked...Bottom line: I really like it and it feels great and sounds great to play it...and looking at it makes me go O-My! Just what I needed...Also notice I said Ovation and not Adamas...I have 4 A1's that are tough if not impossible to beat...and then there are the non-roundback's...but since this is an Ovation Fan Club...I'll just revel in this great guitar and be thankful...YMMV... |

I just assume I won't have a chance to play it when Jas is around. 'sall right though, I play it a lot any other time. T, have I thanked you recently for unloading it on me? Jas, you have right of first refusal if I ever decide to sell it (a very big if). |

Location: South of most, North of few | You all must have MUCH better hearing than I have. Every 1537 I've owned has sounded great, but about the same. If I had to give a nod to the best, it would be the burst model I had (with the repaired crack), and that's probably only because I liked the looks of it better. These guitars sound so similar (again, to me) that I would have a very hard time differentiating between them, even played side by side. Of course, I still think my 1681 is the best sounding guitar I've played to come out of the O factory yet. (but that's just me)
Bottom line is: whatever does it for you makes a great guitar. If we all loved the same thing, everyone would be after my wife.... ;) |

Mike, not disputing that it is the best Ovation (not Adamas) you have ever owned.
I just said that when I owned that same black 1537, it didn't ring my bell as much as the other 3 that I owned at the same time did. That's why the black one was the first one of the lot that I sold. |

I was able to send Gator pics of the guitar from the ebay auction when Sam bought it. Natural top with a lot of finish cracking. Thought about buying it myself, but didn't have the funds. |

Stephen it's cool...thanks for taking such good care of it...it really does not look like it was ever played...since it wasn't your favorite, that could be the case. I'm sure I've been called crazy for selling several of the guitars I've sold...bottom line: it's a personal decision...I've spent a lot of time with this guitar now and in my opinion it's sweet: that along with the looks make it something I'll treasure.
Have a great weekend everyone... |

This one shows those pesky bridge bolts:
Notice the grain in the top...tight, straight, and numerous...that's why it resonates the way it does...a nice piece of Sitka... |
