There are some great tunes coming from south of the border. I love the interplay between guitars and horns on a good salsa. It is really excellent dance music. SWMBO and I once did a television commercial for a Spanish station to advertise a big annual Carnival dance event. Great work if you can get it.

Cinco de Mayo
Just another holiday created to sell beer.

Corona....Mexico's version of Busch beer.....it is amazing what lengths yuppies will go to look cool. Beer imported from a country you wouldn't drink the water in.....amazing. so good they top it off with a lime! ooh I wonder what flavor they are trying to cover up with that trick!

Cinco de Mayo will always hold fond memories for me after last year.

We were playing at a club downtown. Absolutely dead. It was a saturday night, and it was raining like you wouldn't believe. Kept everyone home. We had literally maybe 10 or 15 people in the crowd, and 3/4 of them were "friends and family".

Until a group of four lovely young ladies wearing enormous straw sombreros came in and shouted "would this be a good place to bring a bachelorette party?"

Heck yea, it is.

Fast forwarding...there were about 25 of them (all about 23 years old and smokin' hot) and they were ready to rock. Then once the party got going, it hit critical mass, a bunch of other people came in, and we rocked for about 2 1/2 hours non stop.

That was a fun gig.

I especially like the part where the drunk girl hoists her top at the band and shouts, "Which one of you is going home with THESE?"

In the category of other Mexican music, today might be the day to check out Mana or Panda.

For variety you could try a Negra Modelo

at least the shape is different.
I think enjoyment of the beer is heat dependent.
Drink beer made for the climate you're in.

Many people incorrectly think that the 5th of May is Mexican Independence Day. That is incorrect. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated in September. The true history of the May 5th celebration is as follows:

Back in 1912 Hellmann's salad dressing was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in NY. This would have been the largest single shipment ever delivered to Mexico. As we know, the great ship did not make it to NY. It hit an iceberg, sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about their newly discovered condiment, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Remembrance which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Remembrance occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

First of all, it wasn't even a tactical victory over the French...some arguement of a strategic as it could have influenced the eventual French withdrawal.

However, in addition to "spirits" and parties, now a time to protest immigration enforcement, anti NAFTA, labor union, etc.

As there are a number of "created holidays", maybe we should have an OVATION DAY or "TAKE YOUR OVATION TO WORK DAY". We would have the same parties, outrageous behavior, just not with a political overtone.

It's a Mexican National Holiday and I applaud them for celebrating. However, I wish those that would celebrate it would take their orange and white and green flags and go to Mexico to celebrate it.

I would never to go to a foreign country and expect to celebrate OUR Independence Day.

Hospitality is one thing. Being insulted is another. I see it as a similar situation to me going to Chihuhua and celebrating VE day or "Remember the Alamo day" or the defeat of Santa Ana. It would be in poor taste and insulting my hosts by celebrating a national holiday.

I see it as similar to having guests over and one of them lighting up. It's one thing if he does it at home. But do it in my house I will ask you to leave.

Cinco de Mayo is NOT an official Mexican holiday.
Yet Political Correctness will have you believe it is.
Cinco de Mayo, is a Californian holiday that has spread to encourage beer sales. So I guess if we are not to discuss politics, then these types of thread shouldn't be started to begin with.....of course I will start a thread on October 23 to celebrate the Hungarian revolution, when Hungary stood up to the Russians in the 1950's

So instead of the Phony "Cinco de Mayo" how about just saying "Happy Beer Day" or "Happy Get Drunk Day"

Political correctness......what a joke!

now, we see if this gets deleted or edited.

The irony is that (at least in my town = currently Moab UT) Cinco de Mayo is a day that the mexican restaurants are booming with business and the poor mexican's who work there are working their butts off. So what's the holiday to them? We ate at a good local place and in honor of the holiday tipped mighty handsomely (100%) even though the Mariachi Band was not playing any Ovations. Happy Holiday mi Amigos.

There was a Mexican place in Provo called Los Tres Amigos that I really liked. Used to eat there all the time when I was consulting in that city.

Never had a Cinco De Mayo there. Maybe I should go back.

Personally (and I hope this doesn't cross the line into politics) I LOVE any opportunity to celebrate other cultures. I love the way everyone in town is Irish on St Pats, everyone is Mexican on Cinco De Mayo, everyone is Italian during the Santa Lucia festival, and everyone is German during Oktoberfest. St Pats is still the biggest thing going around here, but any excuse for a celebration is ok by me.

I had a great time back in 1987 at the Polish Festival in Milwaukee. My hosts were Barbara and Bruno Mlot (how's that for a good Polish name?) and they were great. The food was awesome, limitless beer, and some great polka bands (Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push stood out).

Duck blood soup and all the rest. Lovely time.

Duck blood soup and all the rest. Lovely time.
I guess there are some things about my heritage that I just don't want to know.

The Scandinavian arts festival was my favorite ethnic get-together. Lots of great looking women there, and alcohol. The food was probably good, but I don't remember it for some reason...

A really ba...adaquate country band I seldom admitted to being in in the 80's got all the local Ukranian gigs. Great food and every bite would induce massive coronary infarction. All we had to do was, at one point in the evening, play a Ukranian polka that sounded just like 'Hava Na Gila' for 1/2 an hour while they stood in a circle and 'called each other out' Folk Dance style.

Cultural diversity is good!

In Germany Fasching is THE biggest celebration in the country. Gawd, how I loved FASCHING while stationed there! Let me tell ya'll about the time that... Oh, hi Dear... Oh, just some on-line guitar 'talk'...

No infidelity, just some hops induced flirting. It's amazing when some straight-laced fraus put on a mask...

So....

What Holiday is everyone celebrating today?

My pocket calendar has CdM printed on May 5. Infuriatingly, today is blank.
A date that has far greater rammifications and implications for more people and nations than CdM.

Political Correctedness is in the eye of the beholder and therefore undefinable. Most of what I see called PC is actually PW. Politically Whimpy. Unable to take a stand.

Such hostility! Maybe Canadia does need Fasching worse than we do!
Is it because no canadian teams are in the conference finals in the NHL-again?

OOoooo....and I'd just managed to put that out of my mind for five minutes.
The entire country's in a funk.

....and I don't even care much about hockey!
....................................................

For you it would be like sharing Baseball with the world, then having the World Series won by someone who bought all your best players. ('Course, for that to happen, you would have to let foreign countries play in the world series.....)
.....................................................
BTW: Baseball is Canadian too- First game June 4, 1838 - Ingersoll, ON
You're welcome. :D

I guess nobody cared that Yesterday was VE day. Victory in Europe day. A day to celebrate victory over Nazism and Fascism.....

I guess a multi national holiday is just too much trouble.

I'll start caring about VE Day when my local cantina starts offering 2 for 1 margarita's to celebrate it.
