Location: 6 String Ranch | I think they were one of the best bands ever, I've worn out several copies of Filmore East.
Their influence is huge.
That said Greg did bring it all on himself, sorry to hear it, hope it works well for him.
Jacksonville is no suprise, he's got roots and family in the area.

Gregg Allman was not the soundtrack for my life, but I know what it's like to have those artists and groups that have been. My earlier post was in no way meant to disrespect Tim, his thread, or Gregg Allman and his family. My apologies if I appeared to be insensitive to this situation in Tim's earlier thread.
I read about this transplant earlier today and had time to reflect on the significance of this event long before I made a comment not in the spirit of Tim's thread.
Gregg is now recovering from a serious and delicate procedure and only time will tell if this procedure was truly a success.
Someone had to die so that Gregg Allman could continue to live and that is a bittersweet tragedy. I hope Gregg is able to live out his days in good health and, in some small way, live as a tribute to the donor and their family.
I wish Gregg a speedy and thorough recovery. |

| I grew up not far from Criteria Studios, but was too young to know about the incredible things happening there with the Allmans and Cream. Later, I made many pilgrimages there since these were the musicians that most influenced me. Like Beal, I wore out several copies of Filmore East, and the Allman Brothers music is still what I listen to more often than anything else.
Yeah, Greg brought it on himself. Seems that self-destructive tendencies go along with brilliance in whatever field, but especially the arts. Hope he has a full recovery and enjoys many more years of gracing us with music. |

Location: Houston, Texas | I don't think I would have ever picked up a guitar had it not been for the Allman Bros. Greg and Dickie did most of the writing but it was Duane's slide that really made it.
The first song I ever learned was Blue Sky. I've never learned much slide, but it took me a long time to tell the difference between Dickie and Duane's regular playing without the slide.
The band, like most, has suffered some pretty hard experiences and gone through some rough times when they couldn't sell an album. Some of them had decently written songs by Greg but lacked the cohesiveness of the two guitars.
Things improved when Warren Haynes joined them, but by that time Dickie was about spent. When Derek Trucks joined them, it was like old times again, truly amazing. In the beginning and now, hopefully not at the end, they are a bunch of demanding perfectionists and truly talented.
Check out the Live at the Beacon DVD which I think was recorded in 2003. There's some good interviews in there as well and it seemed like Greg was, and hopefully still is, on the bandwagon. But I guess the damage was done.
Speedy recovery! |

Here he is playing slide on Melissa...
Melissa
I've heard nothing but great things about Gregg. I hope this works out for him. |

Location: Michigan | Interesting, believe it or not I was never a big Allman bros fan until recently. Must be my age? Am I just a couple of years young (50) I think to have been exposed to it. My bro in law who is about 4 or 5 years older) is just sending me songs of theirs to learn to play...and I am liking it. The first one was "Melissa" which I had obviously heard but never really payed attention to. Now he is sending me Skynard stuff.
Of course I hope the transplant works out for him. Regardless of how someone gets sick, they deserve compassion and quality medical care. It sounds like he is getting both. |

Location: Orlando, FL | The Allman Brother's have been great since the beginning. For me the best ever "jam band". They have had an incredible cast of great musicians in the band over the years.
Good luck to Greg! |
