Location: Tennessee | I realized I've got a pretty stout collection of songs done by people from the board here. For a lot of folks here, this is what it is all about ... making music. Maybe a lot of you out there haven't heard these songs done by a lot of talented songwriters, performers and producers. So here's your chance. I'm going to post a song a day (or as often as I get to it).
First up, a wistful look at our summers past, or maybe summer yet to be. This is from the Member's Night Out, Vol. 3 - A Day at The Beach CD. Excellent production by a talented multi-instrumentalist. Let the summer begin!
Ocean Street - StandingOvation
If you want to promote your own songs, I can't stop you from posting them up here. But I would prefer to play disc jockey for this thread ... if you want to send me MP3s of songs you know I don't have, I'd love to add them to my collection and get them into the mix. There's a bunch of you out there posting music (AlanM, Meuti, Damon, Patch, etc.) that I'd want to showcase your tunes. Just click on the email link above to get my addy and send them to me there ... it'll handle file sizes up to 20mb.
And now, on with the show ... |

This current thread could be the comment thread.
Maybe Al could pin them both to the top and somehow lock the SOTD thread while still allowing you to add to it.
Just a thought but as comments roll in, it will make the tunes harder and harder to find. |

Maybe we can make this thread have many pages and a long life for all the right reasons. I think getting the back story to the song would be good too if we can get the artist to post and participate. Many are still around.
Speaking of which, Dave ... I think this is a truly great song. You played a whole bunch of instruments, and all of them quite well. The song itself is awesome, and paints such a great picture of the east coast shore that this song appeared in my head when I was back there a couple of weeks ago (and inspired me to this thread). The production of the whole piece blows me away. Care to talk about how you did it? |

I grew up at the jersey shore and it was such an irony for me because every year for a few months in the summer vacationers would flock to MY town, which I thought pretty much ruined it. THEY were all relaxing having a great vacation, and I was just stuck in my own town wasting time.
Anyway, about the recording. Of course it was done on MAC using Logic and a apogee duet interface. I have to admit, umm, cough cough ... no ovation or adamas guitars were used. Sorry 'bout that. Like any original, it all starts by stealing somebody else's riff. The little 4 note arpeggio unisoned with piano and a Takamine EF417 is exactly the intro piano from Springsteen "Growing Up". I don't remember everything I did but the sequence was pretty much piano first, then bass, drums were a combo of live bass/snare and midi cymbals, some chomp chord piano, the church organ and then the electric guitar break was done using a telecaster.
Lastly, mixing, panning, a tad of reverb here and there, etc. I hate the vocals - combo of bad voice and terrible recording technique but that's the best I could do.
The most fun was trying to get that little accordion or concertina break (did you KNOW that's what it was supposed to sound like?) again trying to rip off Springsteen (Sandy). I only had preset samples and there is NO way to emulate the tone, swells and action of an accordion using a midi keyboard. What I did was play as "un-clean" as I possibly could - intentionally hitting adjacent keys, gliding from chord to chord and just making a muck of it and then double tracking it with some pitch shift and time shift. I actually did it in one take. It's not perfect by any means, but I thought I would only make it worse by worrying about it too much.
Anyway, that's it. Kinda raw but it was fun to do. |

But let's go back to the beginning. The original Member's Night Out Vol. 1 disc. Dave etal must have known there were more to come when they put a volume number on the first one. I'm glad they did, but this first one is kinda special.
Not only did he design the artwork for the disc, but also found the time to record a cover song of one of my favorite artists - Harry Nilsson. You might not be sure how anyone could pull that off, but then that would be underestimating Cliff's vocal and instrumental talents. Distinctly it's own version, this recording still has that vibe and would earn a nod of approval from both Harry and Fred Neil.
TODAY'S song-O-th'day:
Everybody\'s Talking - Cliff Doenges
Enjoy! |

I love the idea of this thread, and look forward to the music being offered up. I'm not in the same league as most of the folks who post music here, and some day I'll figure out how to overdub, but it's fun to record and get a little feedback. (Pun intended. )
The first two pieces are both great. Can't wait to hear some more. |

==================================================
Much like Dave’s tune, this one also has a JerseyShore connection.
ManyMoonsAgo(1976), I had what was my very first “SleepAway Vacation” with the (then) Love of My Life (ahhh,Carol!) for a week in Wildwood, NJ. At one of the BoardwalkArcades (probably SharpShooting), I had won an album (this was back when record albums were the “PremiumPrizes” as opposed to th’stupid Stuff’dAnimals). The album was “StephenStills-Live”, and (I think) it had just come-out. One side was electric, the other acoustic – both sides, “Live”. I always loved his version of “Everybody’sTalkin” from the AcousticSide, and this arrangement was loosely-based on his version.
th’Guitar is an old, Takamine Classical that Beal gave me after he salvaged it from Charlie’sBasement. It harkens back to the time of the initial Takamine/Kaman Days, and had rusty, green strings, and a patina of mold all over it. It CleanedUp like a Jewel, and continually became th’Guitar that was always within-reach around th’House (and subsequently, th'One that I would write tunes on).
Everything was recorded w/Cubase with a small-diaphragm condenser on th’Guitar, and large-diaphragm on th’Vocals (and ambient “bleed” from the Guitar). TrackOne was Vocal & open Guitar. TrackTwo was th’OtherVocal & Capo'd(II)Guitar. Tracks 3&4 were Bongos & EggShaker, respectively. th’Last thing t’be recorded was th’Harmonica. I’d always “screwed-around” with one, but never tried PLAYING an official, complete “HarmonicaPart” on a tune. This was my FirstAttempt. I decided to forego the usual procedure of recording th’Track “dry” and adding effects in “post” later-on, and piled-on the Reverb/Delay before-handt’put me in an old-style, “TootsThielmans” frame-of-mind while I was playing it.
I had initially tried t’Record this at Dave’s House before we left t’drive from Arizona to Moody’s/NAMM, but it was far TooEarly in a TequilaHazed Morning, & I just couldn’t get it “Right”, so we scrubbed it.
Back in th’safe confines of my subterranean TortureChamber atHome, I plowed-thru it.
All of th’Tracks were done in OneTake, with the exception of th’Harmonica, which I think was two(three?).
================================================
There you have it.
Well done, sir. |

Here's a good one for you. It is also from the MNO Vol. 3 disc, but it's here today in his memory. So no back story on this one.
His handle was tragocaster, and he was a very cool guy with a cool car, cool kids, and a great guitar sound. He was a local legend of blues guitar in and around Flushing, Michigan and made a great contribution to a lot of posts here. I was just getting to know him a bit through myspace and on here ... and suddenly last July he passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. A terrible tragedy. Timothy Jon Lamb, rest in peace brother.

Location: Tennessee | I wasn't going to put this up, but somehow the planets all aligned and this song is up next.
Unfortunately, it's done by yours truly. I didn't want to put any of my stuff up here, but two things converged on this. The first ... yesterday, kimby-d and I took #5 and his gf plus two dogs to Carmel for a romp on the beach and all of a sudden we were back to the scene where this song was written and named.
The second connection is that the song was recorded and mixed in one day from three takes on July 4th weekend, 2008. This song appeared on the Member's Night Out Vol. 3 CD.
Carmelo is my nod at the classic california surf genre I grew up with, and the song is named for the street I was on when I watched the social dynamics of the river beach at Carmel, which I tried to translate to a guitar soundscape.
The first take was the OFC I Guitar (miked, and also sent direct to the board in stereo), my son-in-law Chris playing the congas, and my son Max on the bass. I had two room mikes to try an capture an open "garage" kind of sound. I also did the vocal. The second take I put the electric guitar down, which was my Viper (I wish it had a trem) through a Fender ProReverb with a bit of reverb and delay, miked right in front of the speaker and also from across the room with a pencil condenser to try and capture some natural room reverb. Then the third take we added more percussion, Chris on maracas, Max on eggs, and I had the tambourine and the triangle.
Turn up the sound and go for a cruise.
Carmelo - stonebobbo
Happy 4th of July everyone ... whatever that means for you. |

I LOVE it! Living directly off highway 35 and 1/8th of a mile from highway 36 (2nd jug handle off the GSP, towards the ocean), I can relate, haha! We all just sort of stay HOME in the summer, 'cause you can't even get from exit 117 to 114 for 45 minutes. July 4th is one of the worst ...

Another song from the original Volume 1 of the Member's Night Out series, this fingerpicking instrumental is just about perfect for the end of a long holiday weekend, where you want to just kick back with your feet up, a cold one one one side and a warm friend on the other ... reflecting back on what a great time we just had. A beautiful piece from one of our european brethren, who I hope will find this and let us know how it came to be. So sit back and listen to:

Location: Tennessee | Sometimes you find talent just lurking. So it is with this next tune. There's a guy who has stuck his nose into the tent a couple of times here, and I've discovered he's an Ovationista through and through. He sent me a copy of his CD "A Cry For Help" to check out. It's real nice.
Kit Mann lives in Indiana, and following a career helping others as a soldier, an EMT, and a police officer ... he is now disabled and relies on help from others to get through his daily life. His CD is a mix of rocking electric and introspective acoustic music. I know Kit likes a lot of the other songs on his CD better, I picked the title track from the album to put up here just because it touched me.
Here's your song of the day:
Cry For Help - Kit Mann
I hope Kit comes on here and provides the back story to this song. And I know he'd love to get his CD and music into the hands of people here. You can probably contact him here through the messaging system, or PM me and I'll get his contact information to you.
Until the next time, play. |

Location: Connersville, Indiana | Hey you all this is Kit. Bobbo thank you for playing the song for me. It started out years ago as just music I warmed up my fingers and hands with. And like bobbo said, I have had 4 operations on my chest. Heart operation then the sternum split, reconstructive operation, then it split apart again, no I have no sternum, just kevlar and gortex fabric. Now I'm doing great, it has been a long journey. I played my Elite and Ovation 12 strings, we used two mic's 1 on the neck 2nd on the center of the guitars: along with 2 overhead mic's. I played my UKll on the main distortion channel of my Crate GFX2/12. It was mic'ed with a Shure SM57 I think. The leaad guitar player on my cd and this song used all of my Ovations and on the electric he ran it through a line 6 amp with 800 bagillion effects. I'm so happy you enjoyed the song. I'm trying to find the best and less expensive way to get my CD on the internet so everyone can down load the music either 1 song or the entire cd Free. Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe latter Bobbo will play some more off the CD so you can hear the others. But so far I am enjoying all the music he has played. Great stuff. |

Location: Connersville, Indiana | Damn I forgot. After so many operation Karen and I came home from a trip and my dogs were big time excited. So I was taking Mac, my 100lb black lab out. As I was opening the door I dropped something and mac stuck his nose out the door while I was bent over. Guess who was there to meet Mac. A chipmonk. Well Mac took off with my hand wrapped in the leash. He dragged me out of the garage and I was able to get loose but it was too late. My chest was big time messed up. So I was layed up for a long time and while I was warming up with the music you heard I just started singing (A lone in these walls don't dare go outside) The song took off from there. It is about me but I wanted to write it such that anyone with problems could relate to the song. Hope I did well enough and by some of your comments it seemed to do what I wanted it to do. Thank you all

But then again the bumb wants $35.00 for a CD. I'm really not wanting to make a lot of money, as you can see by what Bobbo wrote about me money was not my big thing. I was more interested in being there when someone needed me....Good or bad. I texed Mr. Ovation to see if we could put here on the web page for free down loads, but his system and not set up to do that. Right now I'm looking into anything I can to Give the music away for free. And like my chosen job in life.....I one person is touched by one song on my CD for free, then I did my job. Besides CDBABY so far has not e-mailed back if they would process a free CD down load or individual songs.
Thanks for the advise

Location: Tennessee | Thanks, Kit ... for your service and contributions. Hope to see more of you around here.
Now here's a rare one ... and a unique bit of history for all things Ovation and Kaman. One of Charlie's philanthropic endeavors was the Fidelco Foundation ... you know, the guide dogs for the blind people. Charlie's wife Roberta was the driving force behind the foundation ... and sadly Robbie passed away a couple of weeks ago. But she left behind a legacy of service and contribution that is admirable. This is a tip of the hat to Robbie.
Anyway, back in the late 70's, Charlie, Bill & Steve Kaman got together to record an album of songs ... which would be sold to raise money for the foundation. I was lucky enough to get an copy of the album when a small stash were found a few years ago.
There are a whole lot of good songs on the record, but I picked this one in particular for a number reasons, including the opening banter, the beautiful song, the great sounds of the Ovations, and a special guest appearance by the great Marcel Dadi. Enjoy!!

Location: Tennessee | All right, let's get ready for the weekend here. Nothing quite like a summer day. And even though there was a whole OFC CD (Vol 3) about summertime and such, this song actually appeared on the first OFC disc. It was the penultimate track on the disc ... a counterpoint to the opening track which was also performed by John Peterson.

Location: closely held secret | Thanks, Bobbo. This has always been one of my favorite tracks. I hope everyone enjoys it.
I had fun doing that one, because I didn't know where it was going when I started recording. I played both guitar parts with my 1867 Legend running through my 4 channel mixer into an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 interface. Recording was done with Cubase. Added the bass line with my Yamaha bass, and the cymbal swells are from loop files.
The strings I added using Sampletank. Mastering was done using ACID and Izotope Ozone.
My one regret on this track is that I didn't notice the lead track was overdriven in spots until I was mastering. Didn't think I could capture it again, so I cleaned it up as best as I could with Ozone and went with it. |

I went out front to tend to the foliage, and the few lizards who call my front yard home jumped off the brick planters and rocks and scattered. Yes there were lizards in the air ... not alligator lizards in the air - that would be over on the Ventura Highway which is a bit southeast of me here. And no, the Song-O-Th'Day is not that America tune you thought I was leading up to, but instead something that just made me smile the first time I heard it on the inaugural OFC CD. It still makes me smile every time I hear it ...
He is now part of Guitars Of Fire, but in the old days he was the artist known as Jeff Burns.

Location: Tennessee | Happy Monday, y'all. Sorry there was no SOTD yesterday ... life got in the way. As it should. It was #5's birthday, and on top of that he is playing on a baseball team that is trying to play their way into the Big League World Series later this month. Last night, the team played in a "win or go home" game at the state championship level. #5 is a pitcher, and on this team of stars he doesn't get field time in other positions, despite his talent. But due to a confluence of events, a couple of players had to leave the game with two outs in the final inning with a couple of runners on and the good guys clinging to a one run lead. A new second baseman was inserted and #5 was put into right field. One pitch later, the batter rocketed a ball into deep right center field where #5 could not quite chase it down for the final out, but alertly caught it on a rebound off the brick wall, fired a rocket back to the infield where it was relayed by the new second baseman to the catcher who applied the tag on the runner for the final out and the opportunity to move on towards a championship. It was a stunning moment.
So how could I NOT put this one up today?
Right Field - bobbo, gallerinski, cliff and debanjo
This was filmed by Tim in Tidewater at the OFC Jam Night at the Matt Smith clinic on Amelia Island back in 2008. You can hear a lot of your OFC friends in the background ... and I had a blast doing this with Dave, Cliff and Steve.
Until tomorrow ... |

What team does your #5 play for? I so enjoy watching the younger World Series! I'd love to follow the events, if televised. I normally don't root for Kali teams, but I could make an exception this time; as long as they're not playing a non-Miami team from Florida...
Again, thanx for the great SOTD thread! |

There were some summers when I was in amateur ball that they needed to put me somewhere...cause we had just barely nine players. So, I played right-field. I know the "right-field" feeling very well!

But enough of this amateur hour stuff ... here is a song by my very most favorite Ovation artist. I'm not sure where I first heard him do this song ... it could have been at the Acoustic Cafe at NAMM. But for sure it whacked me when he did it at the Frisky Mermaid show in Fernandina Beach at what was known as Amelia2.
This version is off the album Meet The Monstas ... a must have recording. If you don't have it, go over to mattsmithsworld.com and get it. While you're there, pick up his ChopShop and BigFun discs too. You won't be sorry.
While we can all attest that Matt Smith is a player's player, who can seemingly play any style of music on any stringed instrument with style, panache, and beauty, I am always blown away by his talents as a vocalist. Simply amazing. You HAVE to see him live. Put that one in your bucket list.
Ladies and gentleman, the one and only Matt Smith.

It's the thrill of seeing an artist perform the song in a coffee house ... where there is nothing between you and the singer/songwriter. Where gizmos, gadgetry and gimmicks are non-existent ... the only things that matter are the lyrics, the tune, and the player. It's where most of us live day in and day out. There are few however who can tell a story where the images form in our mind, and we transcend everything around us to wind up in the place where the singer/songwriter has created for our pleasure.
Such is the case here ... where I can see the bottles, feel the acceleration, hear the words coming from kimby-d, taste the ribs and chicken, and smell the brazilian. While there might be temptation, there is no guilt. So savor this one. I guarantee it'll keep popping into your head at all the right moments.

[/QB] Whatever stopped this guy from becoming famous?!? The more I play this song, the better it sounds. And Sleepy Eyes has a major-league singing voice for this genre. The playing is tasty, and you can easily envision this having two versions: this one, and a 10-15 minute jam version with three guitarists just going off in turns, leading over the beautifully melodic progressions behind it. Great selection! |

And THIS is a great potential jammin' song as well! What fun to break out the ol' OFC II and lay down a few (amateurish) blues licks while playing this on the stereo!

Location: Tennessee | Well, I'm back. I had a nice couple of days doing something different, and it was a blast all the way around. I got to listen to a bunch of music whilst tootling along, and I'm primed and ready to spin another disc. Let's see about putting S-O-T'D back on the Top of the Charts here at radiOfc.
I love it when a plan comes together. I totally love this next track and have so since the first time I heard it. I was set on putting it up a couple of times but something else always had the last minute karma and got spun. Well, karma is a boomerang ... and proved it again today.
I have a Facebook page ... and I'm a fan of Ovation Guitars over there. Today, they linked up a video of ... get this .. an OFC'r playing an Adamas, with the message "All I can say is sweet!". OMG! It's the song I keep trying to put up from the OFC Member's Night Out Vol II disc. Put up on Facebook! It's always some big star that they promote, someone real well known ... either famous or infamous. But it's one of the family, notre frère.
So listen to this song (and put your headphones on! Ovation stereo pickups can be just the coolest):
Blue Finger - Pascal Ridoux
Whoa. What a great sound that Adamas puts out. And what a great player! Nice job Pascal.
And now, for everyone out there wondering how the heck he plays that, here is the video that Ovation Guitars blasted out to all their Facebook fans - over 5000 of them. Well, here it it being blasted out to over 8000 more!
YOU TUBE - Blue Finger by Pascal
Is life totally cool or what? Catch you all on the B-Side. Until then, play something sweet for your baby. |

This next song comes to us from Damon ... most of you know him as the red blanket photographer. He is a man of many talents. I hope there is another OFC CD in our future, because his music needs to be on one for everyone to hear.
Meeting Damon is another one of those "small world" stories from the OFC. I lived on the same small island as Damon, and while we never met (that we know of) we both bought guitars from the same places, ate in the same cafes, walked the same streets, and stood on the same beach watching the jet fighters land at the Naval Air Station whenever an aircraft carrier came home. We both bought our first Ovations from Shoreline Music ... now long gone but forever etched into the very fabric of our being.
But it is not Alameda I now hear in Damon's music ... but instead I hear the sound of Seattle. The birthplace of what is now "alternative" ... that happening driving sound of the nineties that draw their influence to what came out of the clubs and bars in Pioneer Square and the seedy heroin-friendly neighborhoods around. And the alleys and byways all along the waterfront from the dome to the space needle and up 1st. Kurt and Nivana, and Eddie and Pearl Jam, and Layne and Alice in Chains. Underneath the grunge, the great music and social changling coexisted side by side, until it devoured those that defined it ... or at least 2/3 of them. The third just barely making out it alive.
When it came down to picking a track for this Song-O-Th'Day, I was struck by the pure guitar sounds, both acoustic and electric, that make this cut so listenable. Well, having a distinctive vocalist performing nice lyrics over a solid melody ranks right up there too. But from the first opening note, you sense something good is coming your way ... so get ready for this one ... put on some real speakers, or headphones, lean back, close your eyes, and let me:
Take You Down - Chasen Chantz
Pleasant dreams and high times until the next one. |

I'd love for you all to think that's my voice on there, but it's not. I figured if there was any chance (or Chantz) of doing something big and mainstream in the music industry, I had to have a good-looking young frontman.
That would be Brian Burnett. He's not only a fantastic singer, but he writes most the melody and lyrics. He's a stellar guitarist as well. That's him you hear on the acoustic. He's using my "Book" Elite. It was miced in 2 spots and also direct in to the board.
As for me, well I stand off to the side and noodle around all day long. In this tune I wanted a distinct tone so I went with my '67 Tornado. I just love the tone that comes out of that thing.
All the recordings were done right here at home. I used a Tascam FW1082 as my interface into the computer (a mac). I use Logic Pro for my DAW. The Tascam was also used for mixing in the end.
Thanks again Bobbo! |

Location: Tennessee | And the hits just keep on coming!! All the players so far have been great and if you're just getting here, go back and catch up ... but be prepared for more great tunes coming your way.
It's a beautiful afternoon in CasaBobboLand, mid 80 degrees with sunny skies, a slight breeze coming off the ocean and into the valley, with palm trees, a sparkling pool, and a sparkling beverage awaiting a step outside ... and the 5:00 bell just rang here on Friday. Officially into weekend mode and hearing a song in my head. It's time to play it.
Look What the Wind Blew In - Slipkid
I first heard this song when Brad played it at the singer songwriter night at the Frisky Mermain in Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, South Georgia Florida. Piratesville. He didn't win even though everyone thought he should have, but that's celebrity judges for you. He played it twice with a great backing band including (if my memory isn't all up in smoke) Templeman, Cliff, Waskel, and Beal. So every time I hear this studio version (from the OFC Day at the Beach CD, and also featured on "Out Of Th' Box"), I get that island feel, of swaying palms, ocean cooled breezes, sparkling ocean, a cool adult beverage, my feet in water, and my head in the clouds.
And with that ... it's outside I go. Start your weekend right. Don't forget kiss your baby tonight. |

I'll always remember that night at the Mermaid fondly.
Those guys who got up and played made my simple little 2-1/2 chord song sound like a lot more than what it really was. |

Location: Tennessee | That picture was a year later than the night we celebrated your win. ProfBB won the That Guy topic. Your night was capped off by the infamous "Escape from Huddle House".
But that was then, and this is now. Time to move from the past and into the future. I am honored to have the opportunity to present the official, world-wide debut of this new composition by one of our resident masters. You've heard his previous work, and many of you are faithful followers and even had him up as one of you current favorites in your rotation right now. Each new work of art from Alan goes places beyond our ability to imagine ... drawing together tones and textures, tempos and dynamics, speed and touch, and melodies and harmonies into a complex multi-layered symphony of strings and things.

Location: Newington, CT | First: Thanks for that fulsome introduction, Bobbo! You MUST have done some real DJ'ing in the past. Second: Thanks, Kitmann, for your very kind words.
This is a fun thread!
Bobbo: I know you were hoping to get some kind of understanding of how each song you present is made, or whether there's a story to it.
Here's how this one found its way into existence.
First, you sit down and start to play, improvising for a while. Lots of runs to loosen up the fingers. Few well-hit notes; lotsa clinkers. After a while -- 10 minutes or so, the notes get a lot cleaner -- and a bit repetitive. Time to do some chording. You find some chords that work well together, and try to take them in a direction. Something like Am to Dm to E to F gives a nice Spanish flavor.
Quick key change, say using Bm, D, F#m, and it's a nice sound and flavor change to the vaguely Irish. Move some fingers around and you have some variations on your chords, and it gets a tad more exotic.
All of a sudden, you realize that you've found your way to a nice backing track, and the urge comes over you to "jam" with it. The progression grows and evolves...might have an identifiable rhythm, might not.
You grab your handy-dandy ZOOM H2 audio recorder, turn it on and play your backing track. When it's done, you plug the H2 into your computer and copy the new track to the computer. By default, it comes over as a .wav or .mp3 file.
You then launch your free Audacity software, and "import" your new backing track to start a new Audacity project that will eventually become your song.
Now, you take out your computer headphones and put them on. Turn down the volume on the computer, and start playback of the backing track through the headphones. At this point, take your favorite jamming guitar and play. The lowered volume on the computer allows you to hear both your backing track through your headphones and your accompanying jam outside the 'phones. This lets you know how your backing track works as a jammin' track.
Note: This is also how you "grow" your song. Each recording happens as you listen to the growing song on headphones, and record to the ZOOM H2 outside the 'phones. The recorder picks up only your jam; not the backing track playing through the 'phones. When you import the jam into Audacity and add it to your project, then the backing track and the jam synch up as you heard them through your head phones. Audacity further allows you to move the tracks backward and forward in time so that you can tweak the synchronization all you need.
When you are sure you want to continue, you start the H2 recording again at the same time as you re-start playback of your backing track through your headphones. Jam. When the playback is done, you copy your new recording to the computer and import it into your Audacity project.
Now, you have a backing track and your "jam" in the same project. Adjust volume of both the backing track and your jam to balance things out.
Repeat as necessary.
For example: simetimes I like to put a lead on the left stereo side and one on the right. Audacity does that quite nicely.
Another recording later, and I have a "rhythm guitarist" (the backing track) and two "lead guitarists" (all me) playing solos -- sometimes competing, sometimes complimenting each other -- all playing togeter. All that's missing, hypothetically, is one more lead -- say one in the middle along with the backing track -- jamming with the other two.
Done?
Maybe.
Now that you have four guitarists jamming with each other, you might want to add some percussion or some tambourines or, or, or...of course the possibilities are endless, and I've tried several, including empty bottles, (blown on and tapped), silverware, a bar stool, a cajon, whistling, humming and assorted other sound generators.
It's kind of like having your own "Band in a Box." But the band -- can be all you.
And, of course, after all that, you can convert your song to an MP3, play it through a nice stereo system, and videotape yourself jamming to it. All of a sudden you have a YouTube video.
That -- minus the video part -- is roughly how "Meditation #8" was made. It has four guitarists jamming together to a backing track that I really like, and they're all me. |

Lets make a giant right turn on the genre thing. T%his next player never ceases to amaze me with what he comes up with next. Each recording he does gets better and better ... proving once again that it does take that 10,000 hours. Serge, you're getting real close to paying all your dues, brother.
There's nothing quite like the blues ... played by someone who has the feel and the sound down pat. Not sure what exactly is in your past, but it has to include sleeping in the Greyhound station, eating lotsa baloney, and jammin' on the front porch. Oh, yeah ... and lots of walkin' down roads going to the next place ...
Walkin\' Blues - Sergio Caballero (G8r)

| Wow, Bobbo, you put me in the company of giants! I'm humbled, and thanks for the good words, folks.
OK, 'Zilla you were the inspiration for my wanting to learn this song. You did such a killer rendition last time we were together I just had to try.
Guitar is a Takamine EF75J #61 (Brazillion B&S, master-grade spruce top, OM size), and the action is actually quite low, tuned to open G with D'add EXP16. I had to really adjust my touch to keep the slide from hitting the frets. And if you're gonna do slide, you HAVE TO use a Nunwell. Can't find any old vintage Coricidin bottles anymore.
Slide and vocals recorded together. On the guitar, 50% mix from the onboard thin-line driver (panned about 30% left) and 50% from a Beringher C2 mic about 6 inches from the soundhole (panned about 30% right); vocals thru a SM58 and EQ'd onboard my Alesis mixer. Went back and added cajon percussion picked up by a Shure PG52 placed at the soundhole. Finally, added a rhythm guitar track played on my Adamas 1687 run directly thru a Baggs DI into the board, in standard tuning, playing most of the chords barred and emphasizing the bass. Everything went dry into the final mix.
As I've been told, I need to get a Neumann to get some of the "mushiness" out of the guitar and vocal tracks. Still waiting for someone to send me one... |

Sometimes it's intellectual mayhem. Warhol was like that, in terms of how he viewed music. And when I first heard this next song I was writing down notes about all the songs on the Vol 2 OFC disc and jotted down I bet Warhol would love this song ; not that I knew Warhol or anything but it just came to mind. And the whole picture then emerged on me that yeah, I can see alpep hanging out at Warhol's. At least what I've seen in pictures and what I've read. But it just seems right.

A lot of people pluck the nylon strings to hard, my opine, but he did a fantastic job, even when he bent the strings. I loved it. Great Choice!

I wrote "Pretty as a Picture (Deadly as a Gun)" many years ago. Sort of a culmination of several women I knew (no not my wife).
It contains what I thought was the best lyric I ever wrote,
"cautious rendezvous like undercover spies"

Location: Tennessee | Maybe not, dark bar, but have you ever seen two Wongs make it right? Well, here's your chance.
It was real cool to see the reunion going down. Kenny Wong now lives in Michigan. Michael Wong (playadamas) lives in California. They hadn't seen each other for almost 30 years. Since they both lived in Singapore (or was it Hong Kong?). But way back when, they were two parts of a trio. That played lots and lots of American acoustic music. So when Amelia4 went down, Michael decided to come, and Kenny decided to make the trip to meet up with his old singing partner from all those years before.
It was like magic the first time ... it was in the room T28 and I were sharing in Fernandina. Michael and Kenny came in and sat down in the living room, ostensibly to play the SLOTHEAD that was there for us to play. But it immediately turned into song after song of great guitar and beautiful harmonies.
The Wongs (no they are not related) continued to amaze folks as the weekend went on, and perhaps they were oblivious to the effect they were having on people in general because they were so into making great music as a duo. But their talents did not miss the ears of Brad Davis, who was the headline act for a concert at Indigo Alley. Brad invited Kenny and Michael to open his show ... and they played an absolutely wonderful set of songs.
I was able to record parts of the set on my iPhone ... I know, I know ... but it was there and handy. And I wanted to capture the moment because there was something very special about it. So, the picture is grainy, the sound less-than-stellar, but you will get a sense of the magic. Two guys and a couple of Adamas guitars. And a great rendition of a classic Styx song.
Boat on a River - Michael Wong and Kenny Wong
It doesn't get much better than this. And in the words of the inimitable Matt Smith ... "If it sounds nice, play it twice". I've played this a lot more than that. Enjoy your boat ride ... see you when you get back. |

Fortunately, the two ladies singing more than made up for it.

Those ended after Fender bought Ovation, but there have been smaller regional gatherings that some of us have been able to attend. It would be nice to have an annual event again so a larger group might be able to meet personally, even though it's tough for some to travel cross-country without enough frequent flyer miles. |

Location: Tennessee | I don't have much time, but I wanted to bring another great Ovation Song-O-Th'Day to you. It's not hard to choose one today because I started hearing it my head last night.
My bro-in-law was a medical emergency evac from a Delta flight two days ago, and has since been fighting hard in ICU but signs are not good. We're launching the silver bullet back up to Sacramento in a few to hold vigil. There too much of that going round these days for me. I got friend who's dealing with saying goodbye to his ma. And other who is saying goodbye to his son. And one more saying goodbye to his wife.
Music can fill us with such emotion, give us comfort, make us cry, give us inspiration. Fill us with love, joy, and hope. Invoke memories, and keep something memorable such that it's always there, living just inside THAT music.
That's sort of what this song does for me. It really touched me (again) when I went to preview it so I could post it. I don't have a lot more words to say here ... except it is beautifully written, beautifully performed, and a great example of "the Ovation sound". Listen to this song by southern California singer/songwriter Dan Roten all the way through. From the Member's Night Out Vol. 2 disc:
This Moment With You - Dan Roten
Take an extra moment to stop and look around today. And tell somebody you love them. |

Bobbo, I have to say that you are truly capturing the essence and mood in each of your selections!
Alan's web o' notes, Serges 'get down' blues, Dan and Al's 'life sharings', Damon's 'punch it out dere' and all da rest are just wonderful.
What a treasure trove we have here in the OFC! Whatever emotions are evoked through this thread and the music are the same ones shared whenever there is an OFC gathering, except ya get to hug 'em at the jams.
Which makes it all the more painful in seeing 'sides' being picked. Day-um folks, just listen to da music... It's the common denominator for EVERYONE here! |

I don't feel much like writing today, so I'll let the music do the talking. This one's from the Member's Night Out Vol. 2 release:
Gone But Not Forgotten - Styll
RIP Tommy O'Brien. Vietnam Vet. Army Ranger. County Sheriff. Football Referee. Father. Husband. Brother. Friend. Gone but not forgotten.
Kiss your loved ones. Settle up with yourself. Tomorrow we'll sing a happy song. |

| RIP to a REAL hero - a man who quietly did what he had to do, and what he felt was right, never wanting (or needing) mass acclaim.
Please extend our condolences to Kim and the rest of Tommy's family. |

I didn't know him, but I'm grateful for the life of someone who sounds like a fine man who contributed a lot and asked only a little. And, best wishes to you, Bobbo, for consolation and the solace of sweet memories.

So eloquently expressed!
In Bobbo's current absence, may I present one of my absolute favorites of ALL times by the author of this fantastic thread...
I Don\'t Want To Lose You Yet
Bobbo, may the love and care of those that do both here, carry you and yours high and through this tribulation! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I listened to Bobbo's whole CD yesterday in the car and he has quite a bit of vocal variety. I couldn't listen to the Hey Baby song because it skipped, so I took it out and rubbed it on the front of my shirt to clean it off. Didn't help and, when I looked down at my shirt it was all smeared with black stuff. Bobbo's hair came off on my shirt! I thought it might be fake. |

Hey, all right! It looks like we're back live. There's too much good O'Music to let it get shut down. So we'll continue do our best to bring you the best your compatriots have to offer. The music survives.
So come in here, hunch over your digital bit receiver and translator, dial into this frequency ... but respect the music. We'll get it out to you, and you drink it in ... but respect the music. With music, we can give a smile to the sad. With music, we can heal the hurting. With music, we can love each other. With music, we can be at peace.
Every song tells a story. Every song is a work of art. Every song is a labor of love. Respect the music.
Tonight's Song-O-Th'Day is: Farewell, Friend - Zozobra
Zozobra is the artist name used by Steve Boyer - flysig over on the OvationFanClub site. He's posted up some music before ... extremely varied stuff from blues, to rock to acoustic ... and then there's all the Sara stuff and multiple band persona that he is involved with. Tonight's selection is from the album "Slightly Taboo".
This song is different from the others. I'm a big fan of surf instrumentals ... I have a lot of them and I listen to a lot of them. And this track would fit in perfectly into a random mix coming out of the trusty Bose. Soothing. Moving. Expressive. Smooth. It's just got that thing that makes it something worth listening to twice in a row. So do it. And the second time, close your eyes and let the music take you on a trip. Do it. You'll thank me later.
Farewell, friend. On so many levels. Fare well. Because today is the first day of something new. That makes me smile. How about you? |

Location: Tennessee | Why, thank you all for the kind words. And the nice thoughts and wishes while we're going through this thing they call life. Thanks from all of us.
By the way ... the secret to overcoming shyness is sunglasses. No question about it. Just like in Big Daddy. I'm an expert in this.
Mark, there's one of mine up by the top of the page ... linked inside Iffy's post. One that's not on your disc. Thanks Johnny for the special thoughts; that was a fun song to do and the inside scoop about how it all came together is over in a blog here: Off The Wall . It turns out my girl liked it after all. The music survives.
Late this afternoon I rotated out some old vinyl to where I play my turntable and nice speakers (there is so much more music inside the grooves of that licorice pizza than we've come to accept with digital music ... but that's a whole other story) and one I brought down was Honky Chateau by Elton John. That was a pretty momentous album ... it's when Dee and Davey and Nigel all went from just being the road band to being the studio band too. And Ray Cooper was there of course. Elton started rocking more and it's when he started to learn it was OK to be outrageous. He was a little shy at first about going there. I contend it was the sunglasses ... even if those were a little more out there for my tastes. I'm a ray-ban man.
So I played side one ... five tight songs starting with Honky Cat and ending with Rocket Man. Which sounds really great because that's the way they made records back then. And it turns out my new son-in-law, who has stopped in with clk-g, is an Elton John freak. Who'd figure a boy who grew up in Tennessee and Alabama, who was a decade removed from being born when this album was released, would know this stuff? So it was. He was stoked. This was from the day when Elton was the man. The beginning at least.
Fast forward an hour or so. kimby-d is going through a box of old pics . She's recently joined the facebook generation and so she's looking for a photo or two of her with old girlfriends she can share. I call it gawk and shawk. At least it is to your kids and their friends. Inside this box she's got on the kitchen table, she finds a treasure trove of bobbolore, including this ticket from a concert I remember very well:
Mr. clk-g is now over the moon. Yes, I really did see Elton John at Dodger Stadium. Live. In the heyday. It was an event to end all events. Cal Worthington was the official MC ... he and his dog Spot. He had three of them that day and each was a handful in front of those 50,000+ hollering maniacs. Emmy Lou Harris opened the show. I remember that well. I'd never seen her before nor knew who she was. I have never forgotten her since. Joe Walsh was up next and he rocked the house ... Barnstormed the place so to speak. But it was Elton that ran the table that night. What a show. It went on for close to FOUR HOURS ... and it was outfit after outfit, and song after song. Elton had a Dodger uniform he wore ... and it was made out of all sequins. Lady GaGa can only wish she had the style and sashay of Elton. But then I remember some soccer balls and beach balls making it up onto the stage set up in center field ... and Elton showing off some spectacular athletic skills dribbling the soccer balls before launching them back into the crowd with a strong right foot. I remember Billie-Jean King came up on stage for a while. Kiki Dee was there and sang some with Elton. The girls were all strutting their stuff. And then Bernie Taupin came out too.
As the evening draws to a close here, I start to turn off the stereo system and I take Honky Chateau off the turntable ... hmmm ... maybe I'll listen to side 2. I turn it over, give it a quick sweep with the discwasher, drop the needle and listen. There's no hits on this side. You probably don't know any of the songs. Even to me, they are only vaguely familiar ... until I get to track 4. Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters. Supposedly written by Bernie Taupin in New York after he heard gunshots in the night. A great song. In the singer/songwriter style that had made Elton and Bernie so successful up to this point. And this version on the record is nice, very nice in fact, but I hear it differently. Because I heard this before on the first OFC Member's Night Out disc. It's the version of the song I remember. And it's good, very good in fact. So here I am ... in front of this bit collection and distribution device ready to turn you on to a classic song in a version that can be the standard for you too. This one is especially good in headphones.
Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters - Slipkid and BrianT
Well done fellas. And this was before you got good ... at least in your own mind. Clearly, you've always had it. Thanks for a great way to end a long week.
Until the next time, stay cool and make the world a better place if you can. And wear your sunglasses. |

This is 98% Brian. I put the guitar down and just thickened the vocals where I could.
Sometimes, when the other guy has a tune nailed, it's best just to step back and let 'em have at it.

Location: Tennessee | Sometimes you just gotta see it to catch the whole vibe. That's what I had to tell kimby-d when I brought home the tiki torches I bought at Orchard Supply on Sunday. The dude wearing the green vest at OSH told me his neighbor put some on her porch at her condo, and they didn't look nearly as bad as he thought they would. Uh, not exactly a ringing endorsement. But you see, these weren't just any tiki torches, but completely weather proof and ecologically sound landscape lighting ... a flickering amber LED powered by batteries which are charged every day by the sun. That's right, they even have solar tiki torches these days. And less than sixteen buck for a pair of them. Made out of colored formed plastic, they look like real woven bamboo up to about 5 feet away. That come on when the sun goes down, and flickers all night if they've got eight hours of direct sunlight. Instant ambience, you've gotta love that. Even in a condo. Like an island paradise, where romance, love, peace and harmony all go so well together. Those places you remember being for a few days during a special time. Or the ones you've always imagined, but have not yet lived. The ultimate in everything. Paradise.
Think of it as tiki torch therapy. Maybe I'll start a self-help sensation. I think people will go for it. Subliminally telling one's brain that you've got two feet inside of Paradise. That's saying a lot in these days and times when the world seems like anything but paradise. Go we all need to grab whatever bit of it we can and make the most of it.
So that's why I got some tiki torches. To go with the music. Because the scene isn't complete unless you've got some good slack key guitar floating on the breeze. You can't think about the islands without hearing that sound in your head. And so there's this great tune on the Vol 3 of Member's Night Out (A Day at the Beach) by Randy Dellinger, who goes by Lanaki here. His talents are obvious, even if he hasn't been around as much lately ... going to back to school after all those years to become a medical professional is a huge undertaking in itself. He's doing real well though and just like his guitar playing, his talents are obvious to those around him.
So flip on the tiki torches, sit back and join me today in a little summer slacking. Just enjoying our own paradise and a great tune. Now the cool part about this particular version is that it is not from the CD ... nope, it's the same song but played for a video camera. So we can see what he's doing. Like I said at the beginning, sometimes you just gotta see it to catch the whole vibe. That's the way it is with this one. The CD version is excellent ... but this one is every bit as good. Besides, you get to see a nice Ovation guitar ... literally see the island breezes ... and ... will you notice the OFC calendar on the wall? Oh, and make sure you stick around for the Wizard of Oz moment at the end.
Summer Country Slackin\' - Lanaki
See? Don't you feel better already? Summer will be over too soon. Sha-la-la-la-la let's live for today. Aloha. |

This cat has produced hundreds of videos on YouTube with his Ovation and Adamas guitars. But I don't think he spends much time here. As it is, he has a ton of fans right here on the board because he plays and sings the songs people want to hear. And he does it real well.
Check it out:

Location: Tennessee | I DREAM’D in a dream, I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth;
I dream’d that was the new City of Friends;
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love—it led the rest;
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city,
And in all their looks and words.
--Walt Whitman (1819–1892). Leaves of Grass. Thanks for calling Rock-O-Rama. What's on your mind?
"I heard there's a new movie coming out about Camden, New Jersey. Do you know anything about it?"
Wow, as a matter of fact, I do. I first heard about it last year, when I was ordering my OFC II guitar ... Al was telling me about how the film was coming into being. It's about his city. And how no matter what, despite all odds and challenges thrown at it, Camden survives. It is the City Invincible ... because it is a city of people who believe in something. And people who believe can triumph over anything. And there you have Camden ... and while it might not always look like it from the outside, it's what is inside that really matters and this movie tells that story. Check it out at http://www.cityinvincible.com/. It'll be coming out soon and you don't want to miss it.
But you loyal listeners know I would never point you at something unless there was a reason. And I have a hell of a reason for you. You see when Al and I were first talking about this movie last year when ordering my guitar, he had just come in from working with the producer of the movie ... who to use one of Al's songs as the soundtrack for the movie. It seemed like a longshot at the time, but Al was hoping it would work out. Well, hopes and dreams do come true. And sometime things that are bigger than us. It's what the movie is all about. It's what the song is all about. It's what happens every day. It's what happened here.
City Invincible - Alex Pepiak
And one more thing. Support Camden, support Barrington Coffee House, and support Ovation. The same place where this live performance was filmed is the same venue that is hosting the Ovation Roadshow on September 13th. Show up if you can ... you can't go wrong.
Here's to hopes and dreams. And the strength to hold on through the changes and challenge ... to come out better on the other side. |

That video was shot with a short interview which is to be edited and submitted to mindtv Scott at the Barrington Coffeehouse did it and he has not found the time to edit it.
That version of the song is short it actually has another 2 verses and is about 6 minutes total in length. the mindtv video can only be 5 minutes so I shortened it.
I was called by the film maker to be interviewed for the movie and he left the title on my voice mail. I immediately recognized the line from the Walt Whitman poem and from being etched in the side of the Camden City Hall. Some time soon I picked up the guitar and the chorus came out ... the verses were slightly harder. How do you cram 200 years of history into 6 verses? It is not easy.
Anyway when I called TJ back about the interview I asked if he had room for any music and told him I wrote a song for it if he wanted to use it. I recorded a scratch track on my trusty OLYMPUS LS 11 (shameless plug) and sent it off he loved it. So I borrowed a recorder and recorded a good copy. I added bass, shaker, 12 string, a lead and tympani.
TJ hated it.
so I edited it down to guitar and bass and sent it back he loved it again. (I like the full blown mix better but that's me)
He then told me that he was going to use the tune to open the movie and at various points in the film cut some fills, but the end song was the important one.
so off to the drawing board and I wrote another song called "home" which was not so Camden specific so if he did not want it I could use it elsewhere. He loved that one too so that is also going to be in the movie.
Camden has been the worst city in the USA in time magazine for about 10 years or so, it is a tough town that boomed in the 1800's and all through the 60's but declined when RCA Campbell's soup and other companies left to make their stuff overseas.(or in the case of campbell's in the midwest.)
I saw my hometown become a shell, we used to jokingly call it dresden but ultimately it was not funny. The corner stores and places and people that made it may home are now all scattered or gone and I have to admit I miss them.
I spent 17 years there in the public school system because I wanted to give back. It is easy to criticize but getting into the trenches and trying to make a difference is a whole different thing.
Anyway, although I have been at my present home for almost 20 years, I still don't consider it my home. the neighbors and places are all alien to me so when I had the opportunity to contribute these songs to this movie It made me feel good.
I am glad you like this tune it is a very special one for me.
edited to add that this particular performance was not my best but pretty good. |

So on another thread a character from the past dropped back in. He hasn't been round lately ... turns out he was dealing with all kinds of luncheon meat in his life ... or something to that effect. Couple that with having to rehab a bad back, and it's real good to know he's:

I managed to catch up after being out of town!
As always, great music, great selection, and the humbling realization that I may never be in the same league as some of these people.
Not that that's gonna stop me from playing or anything. ;)
Keep crankin'em out Bobbo! |

A relative newcomer to the OFC, Kit Mann has wow'ed a bunch of people here with his posts and his music. And with all the nonsense going on all around us, sides being drawn, and perceptions colored by stubbornness, bigotry and fear, it's only fitting that the time is right for:

Location: Connersville, Indiana | Thank You all. I wrote this after spending a day with my cousin Bob who is blind. I wondered what it would be like. I was at home and we had a bunch of kids and grandkids around. I shut my eyes and just listened to everyone. No judgments, but within the conversations I could here laughter, pain, overbearing personality's and it just go me to thinking.
I played 3 different guitar tracks. 1 electric clean, with reverb, I then played the same thing on my elite. I then used my electric and toned it down a bit with some sustain to take up time and space this way you could hear what the 2 other guitars were doing. I played the electrics through my Crate GFX 212, but the amp was placed in a soundproof box and mic-ed. The Elite was just mic-ed, one on the sound holes and 1 mic about 6 feet away. Since I had so many guitars working I opted not to have a lead guitar, but to bring the bass forward and basically use it as the lead guitar. I had to articulate to the dumber what I wanted it to sound like, and that there would be no drums in the versus just the chorus and ending. I didn't put it on my cd because I was worried that it may be miss understood. Since I have had a lot of people, or different ethnic groups listen to it and get their feedback. They all like it, and the only comment was maybe on the inside jacket, write what the song is about. A man in prison who can not see, let alone see any color, but hears what going on around him. And he wonders what if the whole world could not see any color, not just white, no color, would the world be better.
Again Thanks Bobbo for posting the song, I will ad it to the next cd. If anyone wants me to send them the song just e-mail me at kitmann@me.com or go to my music web wwwsoundclick.com/cryforhelpkitman and I will e-mail it to you or you can down load it under kits demos

I read in a mag where one of Aerosmith's songs they used a smaller amp, cranked it up, placed in a metal garbage can and mic-ed it. then they put the lid on. They got the sound they wanted. Who would come up with that. Must of been a good party prior to the recording session. I have a Lexicon Lambda interface, didn't like the software that came with it. So I use garage band and Logic express on my mac mini computer. There tutorials for both, it's a lot easier then I thought it would be. Keep Playing and recording, it's like golf sometimes you hit the ball great others it ends in the neighbors yard. :) |

Location: Tennessee | Ain't it amazing how sometimes the right sound "just happens". So you can get all those digitized plug-ins, waveform editors, voice processors, sound shapers, and all that black magic hocus pocus stuff ... but underneath it, you still gotta MAKE the music. There's a lot of great tracks in this set list proving just that. And some of that sound was pure accident ... just ask any of the folks. They'll tell you. "I was just messing around and it sounded good". They didn't mean to make it sound like it does ... it just happened.
And then there's the other stuff. Nothing but some strings, some breath, some percussion, a few vocal cords, and someone new "sitting in". Instant classic. Making music raw and pure. It happens once and will never be duplicated. It's the kind of stuff I like to listen to and why we go to live shows. We can listen to the singer songwriter - who can touch you with the simplicity and depth of a well crafted song. Or the jam session - where anything can happen and it usually does.
Summer finally made it to CasaBobboland. It's been very mild, but yikes, today it in the high 90's and tomorrow it's supposed to reach One-Oh-Eight! I think I need a little something from the:
Ice Cream Man - The OFC Southern Style Jam Band
The boys got together at the Southern Style jamboree in Asheville, NC and something "just happened". CrimsonLake was there to catch it on video, which I now offer up to all of you. Enjoy every lick by MusicMishka, Captain Lovehandles, Lanaki, and Blues Sailor, with Big Chris sittin' in. And someone is bangin' on the skins, don't know who but maybe the band will tell us. But no matter ... all the flavors are guaranteed to satisfy.
I think I'll enjoy mine in the shade. Good thing it'll be back to normal 70's in a couple of days. Until then, the only thing to do is enjoy what we got. Hot licks and lots of them. |

Location: Tennessee | Let's get you all started for the weekend. lady stonebobbo and I are off delivering #5 to his institution of higher learning ... with the hopes he doesn't embrace the term "higher learning" with the same gusto as the old man. To be true, there's no worries on that ... being a good student and an athlete gives him the kinds of motivation to get the most from what his new life has to offer. Our greatest hope is that he finds the secret to life ... never stop learning.
G8r is the guy who epitomizes that truism most around here. In the few years he's been around, his guitar playing has improved by orders of magnitude. He's been studying hard ... and more importantly, practicing even harder ... applying all that he learns into something real. As demonstrated here:
Little Martha - Sergio Caballero
Isn't that awesome? Wanna learn it? You can! Just go here: Ovation Guitars Video Lesson Contest . He makes it look so easy ... and fortunately he shows us exactly how to make this tricky song look easy. I'm still working on it. Oh yeah, while you're there, you might as well vote for it. And then you can look up Jukebox Joe and vote for him too.
I'm going to go watch a southern california sunset from the beach. And listen to Little Martha again. Somehow they just go perfect together. Until the next time, go learn something new. |

Location: Tennessee | Hey y'all ... sorry this place has been vacant for a bit. The spot I was using to store my songs went down. And it looks like it's going to stay down. I have about 90 tunes parked there, so I had a long set list still to go. But blast it ... gone daddy gone. I'll find another place to park, but I figured why waste any more time let's just get this party started again.
Today's tune is a fun one. It was recorded last night. Impromptu ... the way it just has to be sometimes. You see, it was my baby sister's birthday. She's a bass player and really has it going ... her band Loud Neighbor got voted best bar band in the LA beaches a couple of years back. So anyway, she went over to my twin sister's place, and got together with some friends for fun and frolic. It appears there was plenty of both in the house. I was in Newport Beach the end of week before last and while we were doing a bit of jamming, they told me about the all-mama band they were putting together. Last night was a gathering of the lineup. My twin sister has a Sunburst 1311 you see in this video, but it's another mama playin' it. I think they need to tighten up some, but damn if they don't have some real potential.
Wild Thing - The Martini Mamas
If that doesn't make you wanna get up and play your guitars, I don't know what will. I got some more tunes on the way ... it's getting near the end of summer and there's some tunes for the season that I need to play. So check back often, we're back on the air with an expanded library of great songs.
You make my heart sing. You make everything groovy. W-W-W-Wild thing. |

I'm locked and loaded with a new place to keep the songs so get ready for a playlist that will know your socks off.
Over the weekend, I got an email sent to a small group of folks asking for advice on how this song sounded from a production perspective, and suggestion on making it better. Well, clearly the playing was stellar, and a couple of the more savvy studio whizzes that hang out around here gave some instruction on how to open holes to let the instruments stand on their own while still being central to the mix. 24 hours later and there's a killer track sitting in my inbox. And now, from me to you:
Two Teardrops - Sergio Caballero
I'll let G8r explain what he played and how, but just sit back and listen to the tune. Let the images run free in your mind, and appreciate the delicate harmonies and fills that this piece is filled with. And yeah, I shed my own two teardrops ... one for not being able to play like this, and one for not being able to produce a track like this.
Check back again soon. The hits will just keep on coming. |

| Wow, talk about humbling. Thank you all so much.
To tell you the truth, the song itself was easy to learn. I laid down all the tracks in less than an hour. What really took a lot of time - probably 15 hours all told over several days - was trying to get the right mix. I was getting frustrated until I sought out the help of several highly knowledgeable people here. Without their honest critiques and enormously helpful suggestions, I'd probably still be banging my head against the computer screen.
Anyway, technical specs for those who care:
Two Teardrops by Steve Howe and Martin Taylor, from "Masterpiece Guitars" (2003)
Left channel: Collings CJ
Right channel: Takamine EF75
Lead: Adamas 2008 Collector
Bass: Adamas 1681D (longneck)
Recorded to a Boss BR-600, mastered with Reaper. Anyone wanting to know what VST effects chains I used is welcome to email or PM me.
It was a fun project, and highly fruitful, as I now have a better understanding of what it takes to master a multitrack recording. I'm glad you enjoyed it. |

Location: Tennessee | Yes indeed. Speaking of beautifully done, this next tune is award-winning. You're in for quite a treat.
Seeing that there is all this banter about 12 strings, what with MusicMishka getting the new Book12 and all that, I figured a song demonstrating why Ovation 12s are so great was in order. And who but the man of the hour to show us how it's done. I'm not sure which 12 he used on this track, but this one could be the best sounding Ovation he's ever had. :D Heck, it sounds awesome to me and I can't tell you the last time I heard a 12'r that sounds as good as this (not counting my own, of course. haha.)
But I digress. This song was the winner of the songwriter's contest held at the now-defunct, but forever infamous Frisky Mermaid during that hazy week of Amelia II back in March 2008. The theme of the contest was "Wind", and a slew of contestants from around the country (world?) wrote new songs for the contest and performed them before a very tough judging panel. They were all good and some spectacularly so, but clearly the judges were:
Waiting For The Wind - Michael Duane Ward (MusicMishka)
You can see the videos of the live performances over on the ning site ... both the contest performance and then the winners performance. Take your pick, they are both great. But I put up the version Mike recorded for the OFC Member's Night Out Vol. 3 - A Day At The Beach CD. I think you'll like it. And have something to compare the sound of that new Book 12 against.
Until the next time, fill your sails and take your music to the next level. Someone out there needs to hear a song and you could be the one they're waiting on. You just never know. |

Wow, Bob, thanks for the kind words and the nomination...it was a great time at AI for sure...
I used the 1986 Adamas 1688-5 finger-picked straight into the board for this song: the same guitar I used for the performance at the Frisky...
Originally, I had planned to play it on the Adamas '08C but at Beggin's house in S.C. on the way down Tim (TnT) suggested using the 1688...he was so right: it was the guitar to use... When I recorded it for the CD I decided to use a Hollow Sun patch from my Alesis Fusion to add a backing string track panned stereo along with the vocals and 12 string...I used the Sputnik tube mic I got from Stephen and Dave uploaded it...hope you all enjoy it... |

G8r; "Two Teardrops" - I'm not familiar with the original recording, but your rendition is beautiful… Very well played, and the time spent on the mix apparently paid off, it sounds excellent!
MM; "Waiting For The Wind" - WOW… Composition, Lyrics, Vocals, Musicianship… all superb! Gorgeous sound on the 12-string. Oh, and did I mention; WOW! |

Location: Tennessee | Well, if you were at Amelia II, you may have heard this song, except it wasn't this song. Well, not exactly. The contest song didn't win so he changed it round. And then sent it in to be a part of the A Day At The Beach CD. Which it was.
If you've been paying attention to some of the threads, you know that the T-Man had a couple of Adamas guitars made ... 2080 style with longnecks, one a 6 and one a 12. You've heard everyone who had seen/played them rave about their volume and deep rumble, but little do you know that the USGS in Lakewood CO picked up Richter readings the night bobbo had his way with the twins at T-Man Ranch there in the land of the Rockies.
And everyone who hasn't heard them want to know what they sound like. So here you go. It may be getting late in the season, but there is still some time for -
Summer Fun - Stephen Terry (StephenT28)
I'll let the man himself tell you how he put all the pieces together on this tune, but is there any doubt why anyone who is recording tunes around here talks to Stephen for recording advice? Certainly not in this little feeble mind.
The only question I have left, is do you think guiguite's new old Rafferty Adamas makes an appearance here on the Mungo Jerry snippet? Now wouldn't THAT be cool ...
Until the next time, take a break for some last minute summer fun. You can feel it on your skin. Makes you wanna get up and dance. Twirl around, fall to the ground. That's my kind of fun. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | wow......I was out trolling the bars and alley's last night looking to roll a few drunks so I could buy some new friends..........
then I come back on line, see one of my tunes posted and feel all the love. Guess I'll use the money from last night to get buzzed, be more creative and write some new tunes since I seem to have more friends than I realized.
anyway....the back story.
Master DJ Bobbo gave the history of the contest, location, etc., so here is how this one came to be.
I had worked out the music to what I felt (and still do) was a kickass catchy tune with an unusual melody and I just knew it was a winner. I contacted FILLHIXX up in Canada and knowing what a wordsmith he was, sent him an mp3 of the basic music and asked him to write some lyrics for it. He came back and said that normally he wouldn't be interested but IT WAS a different and catchy tune so he would do it.
Anyway, a few days later Phil sends me some of his wonderful sarcastic lyrics and off I go.
Unfortunately after trying for about 3-4 weeks I was never able to PLAY AND SING this tune at the same time.....the timing was just to "different" to allow my brain to cope with it.
I checked the calendar and had exactly one week till Florida and the contest so I did what was called for in this situation and PANICKED!
I told my wife I was "screwed" if I couldn't put something together quickly and asked her to write some lyrics while I tried to write the music. I gave her a few ideas that I had scribbled down and let her have a go at it. A few days later she had the majority written and I only had to tweak it in a few places to make the words fit the tune.
I decided to write the new tune on my freshly received 2080D long neck Adamas. I checked with Beal about the availability of using one of the only other known Adamas longnecks in existence and he said he would be happy to provide it for me to use......so GAME ON!
Then I decided to be cheeky with it and write the main tune on just one string....the bass string...punk at it's finest. The chorus had a descending chord pattern and I was off to the races.
Needless to say at the contest, with only a few days to work on the tune, it was not my finest hour and I struggled through the performance knowing it was doomed to defeat....(specially since I had earlier performed with Waskel his outstanding tune "Breaking Wind" that in my mind was a clear winner)!!!
When I got back home I felt the tune still had merit and decided to rework it and record it properly.
The tune consists of my 2080D longneck for all the guitar parts, my Dingwall Afterburner 6 string bass for additional lows and the high trilling parts and runs and my newly acquired (From Al) cajon that I had fallen in love with at the AI2 experience. All the background vocals were done by me along with the main vocals. I used Antares Speakerphone plug for the "telephonic" verse but the rest was pretty much recorded plain without anything special cept for a tad of eq and compression.
Then I got the bright idea to sloooooooooow down MungoJerry's tune "In The Summertime" (so that it was key matched to the 2080D) and use that as a lead it for the tune.
About this time, Dave sent out the call for CD submissions so I sent him over this "revamped" version of the wind song "Summer Fun".
Dave emailed me back and said he loved the tune and the intro but it got his creative wheels to turning and could he play around with the intro a bit and add a few things. Well, I trusted Dave and told him to go ahead and the masterful result was the beginning that you hear on the track with someone trying vainly to find a tune on the radio that they want to hear. The fact that Dave was able to pull together so many tunes that reflected the "Summer" theme was very cool. I was truly honored when he told me my tune would be the lead track on the new OFC CD.
and there you have it........the rest of the story! |

And how easily we can go from a killer track produced with dozen of tracks, multiple contributors, layers and textures to just a guy and his guitar. Yet it is seamless and we lose nothing. Because it's the music that speaks.
That's the way it is with Patch. His music speaks. Volumes. It's the stuff that makes us want to sit in coffee houses for hours. Soaking up the nuances of words and music and the way they paint a picture in our mind ... with nothing to distract or color our view. It's just a voice, six strings, and a wonderful composition. But yet it is so much more when it gets inside of us. So as the summer wanes, take one more trip down that road, where you find a place to just enjoy the simplicity of it as it flows by ... of course, I am talking about the:
River - Patrick McGuire (Patch)
There's a lot more Patch out there. Check out "Small Boat" on MNO Vol. 3, A Day At The Beach. And I have more to share with you down the line. That in itself should be enough to keep you coming back here.
Until then, go ahead and stick your toes in the water of whatever it is that moves you. You'll find it's always warm and welcoming. Like a late summer river. |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Wow! What a week, and it's only Wednesday! I've never had such an exuberant intro. It actually made me blush I think.
Thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement, especially Stonebobbo who hinted strongly files for besides "Small Boat". The problem was that I had little time to record. So I went pretty raw.
This was done on my lunch hour at my office with a Zoom H4, and sounds pretty much like it would if it were live. I did not use multi-tracking as I had not figured out how yet. So my 1538 12-string was plugged into the recorder and the twin mikes were directed toward the vocals (though they doubtless picked up the Elite as well). From then on, it was jsut playing while singing.
The guitar is tuned to Open-D, a set up that I really enjoy using. The chords are simple progressions of D's, A's, and G's with an occasional F#m if I remember correctly.
I first heard this performed live by Brendan Nolan, one of my favorite Irish balladeers based out of St Pete's in FL. It was written by Bill Staines, though I didn't know that until I googled it a moment ago. Most songs like this make me think of the coast, but this one has always focused in on the mid-Hudson Valley with my mind's eye.
Melodically, it's very similar to Brendan's and Bill's versions, but it has a personal bend or two in it just because open-D tuning lends itself to such musings.
I'm quite pleased that some of you are enjoying the tune. It makes everything a little easier after reading comments as gracious as these.
Thank you Bobbo for the great intro and for picking this song.
And to everyone else--
Thank you most kindly. :) |

Location: Tennessee | Sometimes you just got to be bad. Sometimes you just can't help it. It's something inside you can't quite control. That's why every place you go there's a Marshal waiting to pull the plug on you. It happens. Sometimes you haven't done anything REALLY bad, but you get busted anyway. That's the straw/camel's back deal ... and you get branded:
Outlaw Man - Ronnie Davis
I'm not sure if Ronnie really is an outlaw, but maybe just plays the part sometimes. Like a bunch of others around here, yours truly included. So it goes. It happens to the best of us. But Ronnie can definitely play some guitar and sing ... as evidenced by this song. Which appeared on the OFC Member's Night Out Vol. 2 CD. What a great song. Life and death. Heroes and villains. The stuff we live with every day.
Fortunately this place is not a life or death thing ... we only wind up with the proverbial bullet in the chest for a little while; then the music makes us whole again. And this is real life ... we always have a chance at redemption with the promise of riding again. If we want it. But you have to surrender to the Marshal, as hard as that might be, and not take the hard headed approach that leaves your widow crying at your grave. For there is always one more song to sing and one more story to tell. So get on with it.
Oh, by the way ... do you what's the difference between In-Laws and Outlaws? Outlaws are wanted.
See all you outlaws around. Just check your guns at the door. Drinks are on me. |

Location: Tennessee | Well, here's a tune that I just love. Six MONSTER players. Getting together for a one time deal. And a song you all know the chords and lyrics to, learned to play early in your own guitardom, and yet it is so different. In such a goode way.
Sorry, no Ovations in this one. But without a couple of these cats, you wouldn't have the great Ovations you do. Together they designed/tweaked a whole lot of them, including a bunch of the Collectors. Oh, some of the stories around that ... but that's for another time and another place. hehehe. You think the 1537 is an awesome guitar? The banjo player had a hand in getting it on the map and helping to make sure your Ovation guitar passed the "sound test" if you wanted to play it around with bluegrassers or the Nashville folk. Even if he's playing jazz leads on a banjo in this take.
Johnny B. Goode - The Turner London Band
Awesome players all the way around. Bill Kaman playing an incredible soulful guitar, both lead and rhythm. Steve Sutton (DeBanjo) putting a banjo where it has no business to be, and yet it's perfect. Davis Turner starting on on the Tele, but then just crooning ... even though he can play acoustic and electric guitar like it's goin' out of style. Pam Davis laying down the bottom (I never cease to be amazed at what a great player she is). Hal Jordan on the drums ... when he's really rocking he is THAT GUY Mark Knopfler talks about in Money For Nothing. And last but not least, Brad Davis (THE Brad Davis!) looking confused and overmatched until he finally gets into the groove and double-down-ups his way to show why he is widely regarded as one of the finest players in the business. What else can one say besides ... y'all need to do that again real be.
Until the next time ... be goode. |

Location: Tennessee | This next artist still has some ringing in his ear. His right ear. Those of you who were in the Corps and knew the scout/snipers understand. But that doesn't affect his music much ... in fact, the whole experience gave rise to a whole bunch of good songs. Tough to listen to sometimes, but good songs nonetheless.
Some folks have intimated that OFC stands for old farts club. For the most part I'd have to agree, even if none of us can quite accept that reality, even with that face in the mirror staring back at you. But that doesn't mean that only old farts play Ovations. Quite the contrary. Just check out the pictures of the last NAMM show booth. And this song adds evidence to this fact. And to the fact that war can make you old beyond your years ... especially how you think and look at things.
Those who don't know what it's like always ask those who do what it's like. And when you've been places, seen things, and done deeds that are beyond the imagination of most, how do you answer? And if you fall into the trap of telling them what it's really like, sometimes they tell you back that what you're doing is wrong. Even though they wanted you to do it for them in the first place. So maybe you've just got to tell them in a song.
The Hardest Things - Dane
A heavy thing to come out of a 20 year old kid. But it came out anyway. After a first tour in the sandbox when all hell was breaking loose ... reflecting on what had been and imagining what the future would be like when he went back to do it all over again.
So it came forth in a texture of words and sounds. With Ovations and Hamers. Asked his old man to help out a bit ... engineer, play percussion, and add a lead guitar bit at the end. So it came to be. And was picked up and released on To The Fallen Records, a label that supports the heroes and their families who are willing to do what needs to be done, no matter the sacrifice. Even if it's the ultimate one.
We all makes choices in life. Even when they are thrust upon us. With consequences we couldn't imagine possible when we got ourselves into it. And we want someone else to take it from us and handle it. But no one else is there to take it. So we deal as best we can ... with the fear, the reality, and the memories.
Sometimes the hardest things to give away are the hardest things to keep. |

Location: Tennessee | Hey y'all. Sorry the music went dark for a while. I went down to San Diego for five days to make sure #5 was settling in OK ... yeah it's all good. But man, oh man, did it start getting hot. And I mean HOT!! Today, I get word that it was 104 at 10:45 in the morning! It hit a high of 113. In San Diego! Yikes!! We all need a little:
Summer Breeze - Scott Lamperd
Whew! I'm feeling better already. A little something from the Member's Night Out Vol. 3 - A Day At The Beach CD. Although I suspect all the sand on the beach in San Diego turned to glass today. It was hot all over California today, even up north. But that's OK ... we had a real mild summer so it's Indian Summer for us ... not unheard of. And good too - I've got some friends visiting from out of town in the middle of October so warm weather will be welcome.
So enjoy this song from Scott ... or as he says, Scot Lamperd Before Computers. Whatever he is now, I like it. Now ... back into the pool. Catch a wave and catch you soon. |

Location: Tennessee | It seems that no image has done more for Ovation guitars and their place in American music that the one of Paul Simon playing that black Custom Legend in Central Park back in 1981. Countless people have trolled through this site and commented on that guitar and that concert. So much of that music that Simon and Garfunkel replayed that day in 1981 is ingrained in the psyche of America. And to me, none more than:
America - Standingovation
What a great song, and what a great rendition by Standingovation from the very first OFC Member's Night Out CD. I remember being blown away by this track ... mesmerized by the classic Ovation guitar sound, the great harmonies, and wonderful production that put us right there, sitting next to Kathy on that bus in our tattered jeans ... searching for something to make us whole.
That's the power of good music. It's what we live for ... to BE the music. And the music to BE us. Somedays we need this more than others, but for me, no day is complete without at least a little bit of music. Especially those days when I'm empty and aching and I don't know why. Enjoy the song. I know I do. |

Location: Tennessee | From looking for America to finding the Cajun Queen. You gotta love it when a plan comes together.
You know, it's not often we get a member here that gets airplay with his music. So it's a real treat to have connected with someone who does. Kit Mann has made a splash here at the OFC, and got his music placed up onto the Soundclick site where this song is currently sitting at #6 in the charts, and has been a top ten hit for weeks now.
Cajun Queen - Kit Mann
I heard today that his CD is going into the rotation on the radio in his home state of Indiana. His CD is "A Cry For Help", and has some great music on it top to bottom. It's definitely worth a listen to all of you out there. PM Kit and he'll tell you how to get one.
Congratulation Kit. It is an honor to know you as a man and as a musician. You've selflessly sacrificed a lot for the good of this country and I am happy you're getting at least a little bit of the recognition you deserve. |

Location: Connersville, Indiana | I wrote this after Karen and I came back from New Orleans that Easter before Katrina hit. I used in the song names of places or things I seen. Madam Blues was on Canal street I think, but I don't know if it is still there. The Cajun Queen is a River Boat there or use to be. I came home and was working on the E blues scale and while I was playing the notes on the A string I was hitting the open E at the same time. I thought it sounded bluesy so it started.
I wanted to write a song with the aura of New Orleans, so I put a twist on the old Robert Johnson tale of trading his should to the devil at the crossroads. Here it is temptation that makes the guitar player go with this woman. What he don't know is that she collects musicians to play with her. In the Cajun Queen there are no windows or doors just a stage. He has a choice to play with her until she is done with him and his music lives on or end up in the swamps with the gators. For the woman I wanted to have a nice sexy french name. I combined Champaign with Chevrolet and came up with Challet'. I used Chevrolet because the Logo is from wallpaper found in a Paris Hotel room from the Then owner of the company.
When we recorded. I played the song on my Elite, but i did not want it mic-ed because I wanted the electronics to shine so we just ran it into the board. I then used my UKll. I wanted a nice evil sound, but not like Black Sabbath, so I used both pickups
The neck pickup I switch to double, and placed the volume on 10 and the bass/treble on 8 to brighten it up, then the bridge pickup was set to single coil, volume at 10, and the bass/treble or 3. The combination of the two in that set up is the sound I used for the electric guitar parts, and the long sustained part, which gives it an eerie sound and takes up time and space.
The lead guitar player used the UKll, bridge pu, on single coiled and ran it through a Line 6 amp with 80 bagillion effects. He wanted to use his strat but I asked him to use the UKll. while he was messing with his amp and pedal board I went to get coffee and when I came back in I'll be damned if it did not sound like a strat anyway. Oh well at least he used the guitar. The bass player even used an Ovation bass that the studio/music store had for sale, I'm not sure which kind, maybe a magnum I think but not totally sure, I just know I could not afford how much they wanted for it. Anyway thats how it came about and recorded I hope everyone enjoys it. Again Bobbo thank you so very much it's an honor to have the music played on this thread. |

I really have always been a fan of the voices, and guitars, songs...to me thats a very well put togehter tune.
I'm just a fan of all music period. I cant figure out how some refuse to listen to the 60's, 70's, or they say thats so 80's.....or thats too rock or thats too country....thats not a true fan of music.
Who cares when it was done etc...I discover new music everyday and continue to fall in love with music over and over again.

| I think what db meant was that Bobbo started (and ran) this thread to showcase the talents of OFC members past and present. True, he hasn't posted anything for a little while, but that may be in no small part due to the less than enthusiastic response of the general membership here. Seemed to me it was pretty much the same half-dozen or so people showing appreciation for the work done by the featured members, and everybody else pretty much ignored it. Guess they care more about the guitars as objects than about using them. If it was my thread, I'd have gotten discouraged, too.

Location: Tennessee | Crosby Tyler. That's who's next ... and who knows, you might all be able to say I listened to Crosby before he became big.
Crosby is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. I got to meet him through Paul Templeman, who is currently playing guitar with him on a tour of the UK. They came up to Northern California, and played a few songs one night at a small pub, as did a few of the usual suspects who were also around. Fortunately, Cliff was there with his video camera and recorded the performances that these folks did at Cameron's in Half Moon Bay.
Leave It All In The Hands Of The Lord - Crosby Tyler (with Paul Templeman)
Crosby has a whole bunch of good tunes. Check him out here: http://crosbytyler.com/. He plays a Guild guitar, but that's all right, it's still family. And no worries that this is the Ovation SOTD ... you'll see and hear Templeman playing the Adamas OFC2 guitar. Making it sound way better than the current owner could ever dream about. Templeman is a fabulous instrumentalist who I am amazed and humbled by every time I get a chance to hear him or jam with him.
There's lots more good music on the way. Sorry things went dark for a while ... lots of reasons, all of them valid, none of them adequate. Stuff happens. But it was all good and I've been playing my Ovation in lots of new places lately. So no excuses ... just leave it all in the hands of the Lord. Things always work out.
Stay tuned. Enjoy the music. Play your guitar. Life is good if you let it. |

Location: Tennessee | Thanks for the kind words. This next song comes from a new album I got about a month or so ago. I'd been meaning to get it for a while, and I finally got off the pot and pulled the trigger. Glad I did.
The CD is by the OFC's own Jonmark Stone. There are a bunch of good songs on "Etched in Stone". You ought to listen to them all. But the one I want to feature today has got that great Ovation guitar sound ... not to mention a banjo. But here's living proof that a banjo is not always bad:
True To You - Jonmark Stone
This link is gonna take you to Jonmark's MySpace page ... just press the big "play" "arrow" button next to the song and enjoy. Then you can listen to some other songs when this one's done. If you like it, the whole CD is worth buying.
I got the CD direct from Nashville by ordering it from www.jonmarkstone.com. He's never plugged it here as far as I know ... but I think there's a bunch of you out there that would love this album. Give the tunes a spin, go to Jonmark's website, and check out his music.
Until the next time, go find someone to be true to. The rewards are great. |

Why do I have so much trouble finding the listings for all the videos on YouTube? Seems like there ought to be a link from the Ovation site. |

Location: Tennessee | No worries ... there's lots of good music to be here in ofcland. Damon is a great player, and a great person to boot. There's a bunch of cool songs on the Ovation hometown hero channel on YouTube ... I'll see what I can cull from there and serve it up hot once in a while. But go check it out on your own ... I'm still waiting and hoping they post up the one I did but I haven't seen it yet and I'm starting to think someone there had the good sense to do us all a favor and let it fade into obscurity.
This one for today just seemed so right. I don't know about anyone else, but this Black Friday stuff is just too much for me. I don't get the whole camp out overnight so you can get into store at 4am thing ... this isn't like the old days when we waited outside the Wherehouse overnight to buy tickets to the Stones show. Or whoever it was we wanted to see that week. Maybe it is the same thing, but it's doesn't feel like it to me. It feels like:
Overkill - Cliff Doenges
That's right. The ghost of Black Fridays past ... the now reclusive OFC denizen Cliff Doenges caught live playing a really cool OFC2 guitar at Cameron's Pub in Half Moon Bay, California. It's a great performance, and eerily reminiscent of a lobby jam or two from days gone past. I hope we see another one of those at the Homewood sometime again. But until then, there are still lots of songs to be sung, and Ovations to be played. It's in your hands.
Stay on pins and needles because there's more good stuff on the way. |

Good stuff.
I always enjoy seeing Cliff work.
And if that's not enough, I learn something
every
time.
If I lived close enough to where he plays, odds are, I'd be a groupie.
In a strickly platonic way of course. |

Location: Tennessee | Well ... all right then ... it does seem to be getting to that most wonderful time of the year. I saw on Facebook how even Tim in Tidewater was singing Let It Snow, Let It Snow. Even have a nip in the air out here in bobboland ... had to put on the jacket the other night.
It's not even close to Christmas yet and I just got a new guitar ... one that I can plug into my Roland Synthesizer and make all kinds of crazy sounds. Not counting the usual crazy sounds I can sometimes make with electric guitars. Now I can even make them all together. Good thing my ceiling is not another man's floor. Or vice versa. Anyway, I bought this guitar from a friend on the board here, and he sent along a couple of surprise gift CDs of his that I didn't have, including one titled Navidad. It's in the changer downstairs in the big room along with some other sounds of the seasons, but one of the songs I had heard before.
Indeed, it was on one of the OFC CD's ... the Holiday one. In fact, it was the opening track. So it just seemed fitting to open this year's holiday season with Sergio's great news:
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Lara & Reyes
I've got like four Sergio Lara discs now and they are all great. If you're not familiar, go to his website and check it out. I think you can buy CDs from him there ... including the Navidad CD he and Joe Reyes put out covering a bunch of classic holiday tunes in their unique, grammy-nominated style. Great stuff on the other CDs too. And the best news ... a new disc coming out sometime soon. I heard some advance stuff and I'm already in line for the disc when it releases. It's really nice work.
Anyway, I'm ready for Santa. The man who brings Joy and Happiness. We can all use some of that. Peace on Earth and Goodwill To Men would be really cool too if we could all pull that off. I'm willing to give it a shot. Will you join me?
Oh yeah, thanks Brad. I do know. But Santa's got to come to town first though and get everything set up. ;) It's all about the delivery and Santa's the man who does it best. On time, every time.
Until the next time, wish for something good this holiday season. Wishes do come true, you know? |

I've personally been trying to do some sweet sounding sax solos. |

Old City Bar / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Cliff Doenges
It's a good year to find that place where you hide. And gather with your "family" around, whoever that may be. There's no place like home for the holidays, and let's remember to reach out and touch those visitors who appear, especially the unexpected ones. Use the time for a little rest, too.
Santa's on his way. |

Thanks Cliff and Bobbo! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | OK, my bubble is only half burst knowing that Cliff didn't write the song (I thought I had heard it before), but it's a great performance. Maybe the reason I haven't ever written a song is that I keep finding songs that I wish I would have written. I don't have enough time left to learn them all, much less write something of my own. This is one that I get three wishes on: wish I would have written that; wish I could play like that and wish I could sing it that well. |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Old City Bar is one of my favorite contemporary Christmas songs. I would love to have the chords for it Cliff. On the TSO CD, this song is part of a story that continues through each piece of music. I love that the fact that the "child" mentioned in the song is actually an angel, but it's not specifically stated in the song. Subtlety like that is rare in modern music.
Thanks again for the gift Cliff and Bobbo.
I hope you both have a Merry Christmas.

Here's another song off of that CD that I know has some Ovation guitars on it.
Train Comin\' Down - Second Story Jug Band and Volunteer Choir
Can't think of a better thing than faith, hope and love ... and so I wish that for each of you this New Year. And plenty of good times, too.
