| Harry, one of the great singer/songwriters (and a very good player too) was on his way to do a benefit concert when he died:
YT: Six String Orchestra
YT: Cat\'s In the Cradle

There are several copies on Amazon.com.
Harry signed my copy for me in Pensacola Florida in 1978. |

Harry signed my copy for me in Pensacola Florida in 1978. That is so cool! I've heard that he was a genuinely nice guy. I know that he started some and supported some charities.

Location: Phoenix AZ | With all due respect to Harry Chapin, didn't he die like 29 years ago? OK, I can see maybe a little reminder note on the 10th or 25th anniversary but if you check you'll see that EVERY day is the death anniversary of somebody famous.
Don't mean to tinkle on the twinkies but all this RIP stuff is getting in the way of the posted links to old youtube videos. |

OK, that's a keeper
or is it from an unreleased Harry Chapin song, or Mary Chapin Carpenter, or Karen Carpenter or Coy the Carp? |

Today (7/17/10)
Billie Holiday OD'd in 1959.
John Coltrane in 1967.
Also, Mickey Spillane died in 2006
and Walter Cronkite died Last Year. |

| Just funnin' ya, Michelle. I'm sorry OMA. I guess I didn't see it that way. Some days, I guess I just gotta lay off the caffeine!
Actually this thread provides links to ol' YT vids that some of our newer/younger members may not have had the pleasure to view... especially since Ovations are highlighted and some may not even know of the renown HC. Johnny, that is exactly why I posted this thread. Except for the occasional playing of "Cats in the Cradle", most of Harry's work isn't played on the radio.
It's also why I posted a vid from Jose Feliciano. I actually met a young guitar player who had never heard of Jose. The same for Jim Croce and Maury Muhliesen, which is why I usually post vids on the anniversary of the day they died.

You know any thread posted on the OFC is fair game to take a wrong turn somewhere.
It's what makes this site so entertaining (JM2C). |

I liked Harry. Wasn't too sure about the bestiality reference in the one song about the sea captain, left his wife with his dog, but hey, it's all good.
And isn't being famous and traveling a lot, maybe in small planes, really dangerous? It'd take a long time to list all the musicians and other public figures killed in plane crashes. I should be OK, though. |

And, unless public figures are statistically privileged as well, you'll find magnitudes more were killed and/or injured in automobiles than in an aircraft.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Much like Harry, but in different ways... there are some performers that have "it".... that factor that just defies understanding.. the "it" factor if you will. Neal Diamond has "it" http://www.neildiamond.com/ and lets hope it's many many years before we see him in an RIP thread. FWIW, according to several sources, he prefers Gibsons and Martins. However, I've seen many photos with him an an Adamas.
Back on track.. I always wondered why Harry didn't play an Adamas. It seemed like such a fit for him and his style. Playing to hundreds one night, 1000's the next, with an Orchestra, or just with his brother and couple of others. Seems like necessity would have him playing an Adamas..... of course he wasn't big on spending a lot on himself... so maybe that's it. |

Not even close. Whoops. I guess I mean famous folks seem to have a higher mortality rate, even aside from ODs and such, probably due to all the travel. |

I met Harry when I was in college in way upstate NY (Potsdam to be exact). His brother graduated from my alma mater (Clarkson). They played up there, and I was working setup for the show. I was also station manager of the FM progressive college station and was introduced to him when we interviewed him (he insisted on talking about his causes rather than himself, and that was agreed to in advance with his manager). Upon hearing I was the female station manager at an engineering college (remember, he knew about the male-female ratio) he smiled, commented: "they're everywhere now," and kissed me on the cheek. He was like a breath of fresh air.
I saw him in concert several times after that, and always had a wonderful time. When I heard he had a heart attack and died in his car I was very sad indeed. I'm looking to start playing again after a very long hiatus...and have been humming "Six String Orchestra" ever since that decision. He was a master of the story song and there's been nobody to replace him.
ok...at least I appreciate the original post ;-) |

After seeing some of his "Soundstage" performances, I can see why people enjoyed seeing him so much.
I know someone else who met Harry and they also said that he seemed to be a really nice guy.
