Location: Caribou, ME | I can't recall where I read it but recently I read that Ovation had tried to start a factory somewhere further south, Virginia or someplace. Anyone care to elaborate on that? If any were actually produced, how would one make the distinction?
A year or so ago there was some unfinished disaster of a guitar that supposedly was made by Kaman in Mexico. Maybe it was discussed here, I don't know. Shoulda grabbed it when I had the chance, just for freak value. No idea if the tale was true but they said something about O starting a factory in Mexico and sometime later they went down there and found an empty building. Coud be urban legend, I dunno.
Kinda like some Gretsches that were supposedly made in Mexico in the early 80s, after the Booneville Arkansas plant closed. They all went to a Gretsch employee that I spoke to, who was supposed to do the final setup and inspection. He turned them all back. He said somewhere there's a warehouse or chicken barn with a half a truckload of reject unfinished Gretsches.
I get off on horror stories like that I guess. |

Maybe some Matrix there, too, before they went to Koh-ree-ah. The old gas station guy would have the last word on this subject. |

Applesause and Matrix were Moosup and went from there to KoReeha. There was the 1139/1639 which was the Balladeer special I think, made in Moosup too. |

Location: Caribou, ME | So the Matrix was Moosupium Laminate? Cool! I have Moosup on the brain (can't swing a dead cat over my head without hitting Applesauce here). I just assumed New Hartford was making or at least assembling them there.
I wish I could have done some dumpster diving in Moosup around 1982. I'm betting some parts and unfinished stuff disappeared.... |
