Our keyboard player comes up to me a while ago and asks what type of guitar he should buy at the local mega-store. He adds that he doesn’t want to spend more that $100 because it was only intended to hold him over for a few months until he takes delivery of a custom guitar being built for him as a gift from his father-in-law. Although our keyboard player is an excellent jazz musician, and is particularly good with a synthesizer, he is strictly a newby on guitar.

So, I tell him not to bother buying anything right now and suggest that he just borrow the spare guitar I keep stored in the rehearsal band room until his custom arrives. A few weeks pass, he falls in love with my rehearsal guitar, and then wants to swap me for his not-yet-completed custom guitar. I explain how that wouldn’t be good for family relations, so he asks if there is any way to make the custom sound just like the rehearsal guitar. I tell him to just wait and see what it sounds like when it arrives, then smile about his positive reaction to my rehearsal guitar, which is a 1567 Legend SSB from 1984 in decent shape, but far from perfect.

Incidently, he couldn’t remember the name of the guitar builder, but he understands they are located in Austin and are supposed to have a good reputation. I smile and tell him to sit tight.
