Can someone give me some advice? I have two 1986 collectors edition guitars; a 6 string and a 12 string. The 6 string has yellowed, while the 12 is still white. I didn't get them at the same time, and I bought them both used. I don't know if the 6 string was in a house where someone smoked or not. My question is, can I clean this yellow off somehow? Thanks

Hi, welcome to the OFC.

My guess is that you have to keep the guitar as is. However wait for the advice of more competent people then me....

Anyway, I like yellow :)

Thanks marenostrum, I wouldn't mind the yellow if BOTH were yellow.

Its natural ageing. The pale one will catch up. They will both get more beautiful over the years.
Or you could sand the yellow one :-)

Thanks schroeder, I don't think I'll be sanding it. LOL. Its not the end of the world that they're not the same color. It would have been nice, but I wont risk damaging either one over something so trivial.

Keep the lighter-coloured one near a window, and the yellowed one in a dim corner. After a few months they'll be more closely matched.

I've got twin 70s 1111-6s, both yellowed and blotchy and embarrassingly sexy. Wouldn't change them. If they were human females they'd be guests on the Jerry Springer Show.

schroeder is right it's a natural thing.

Try exposing the whiter one to more sunlight. the UV will age the guitar.

So will neon lights and smoke from a crowded bar.

G8r's advice is also the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try leaving the white one on a stand by a window for a while. Thanks again

Um, I wouldn't leave it near a window. The sun will do MUCH more damage than help.

The smartest thing would be to just start smoking around the house.

It's true that direct, unfiltered sunlight will overheat (resulting in glue failure) and dry out (resulting in cracking) ANY object made (mostly) of wood. Indirect sunlight filtered through a window in a climate-controlled room is a completely different thing. Color development and patinas are common phenomena of most woods and finishes, and more often than not desirable. No one advised putting the guitar directly in the sun.

The smartest thing would be to just start smoking around the house.
I had a friend who always claimed he would start smoking when he turned 60, since the long-term, gonna-kill-ya hazards of smoking take 30 years to manifest. He figured he'd be dead of something else long before the smoking-related stuff got him. He got hit by a bus...

Just leave it out of it's case. It's a slow process, a few years maybe. My AD-II has "aged" quite nicely without setting it out somewhere on purpose.

Oh... you want the yellow OFF.
Good luck with that.

I smoked from 1969 to 2007. I'm not going to start smoking again. It was hard enough quitting without having to go through that again. I don't care if the guitar is yellow. I just thought there might be some easy way to clean it. Its just fine the way it is.

Here's your answer...

Seriously, just let it age; it's a beautifully natural thing! Just think of the patina on an ancient bronze statue... or the aging of a piece of ivory scrimshaw... or the maturing of an ol' Meerschaum pipe... or me! ;)

In other words, just wear it out and enjoy!!!

It's the smoking that made Iffy look older, although I've heard people say they think he's been out in the sun too much.

dponzi,

Back on topic... the 'classic' oldies all have that 'yeller' mature aura. It's priceless. Revel in it!

The original Balladeers and the K1111 reissues had different colored woods in the tops. Mine has a much darker shade of spruce down the middle. Looks pretty cool. One of the nice things about wood is the variety.

The yellowing doesn't bother me at all; in fact, I like the way it looks.

Some people pay EXTRA for a yellow finish. I LOVE this one, especially:

Well, I missed the time I had to edit the above so I couldn't fix the broken link. Lemme try that again:

A yellow beauty, and not from smoking or aging! .... SO yeah, yellow can be beautiful!
