I was told this was a Les Paul Custom and it is being offered at a very attractive price.

How do I know if it is real and what would I check for?

Thanks

Do you have any more pics? At first glance, I would guess no. Post one of the back of the headstock.

Don't have the headstock, sn, or back of headstock yet. They are supposed to bring it over tomorrow for me to look at but I wanted to be clued in before I looked at it.

The volume/tone knobs don't look like the ones I normally think of but Gibson has so many freakin "special" models, who knows???

Without seeing more pictures (especially the front and the back of the headstock), it's hard to tell, but that looks like it could be a '68 reissue.

Do you need a back brace at this point in your life? After playing an LP for a while, you will.

Love the tone/sustain, hate the weight.

Check the serial number on the back of the headstock against the online Gibson database, but that certainly looks to be a '68 reissue.

I don't know all that much about them but I do have fairly nice Standard with an ebony fretboard.

The knobs look identical to the ones on mine. It is missing the pickguard it once had. Notice the screw hole next to the 22nd fret.

The saddles for the b and high e strings look a little funny and it probably needs a setup and intonation.

Changing strings is always a pain since the bridge and tailpiece fall off without the strings to hold them in place and the bridge height adjustment screws are easily disturbed, but some people change strings one at a time so that would eliminate that. A little lock-tite on the height adjustment screws solved the inadvertant adjustment problem for me. I like to set my action a little on the high side for occasional slide, so my saddles sit farther back in the bridge when intonated correctly.

And yeah, LP's are heavy, but I think that adds to the sustain that they are famous for. But after an hour or so, they get pretty heavy on the shoulder.

I had to have one since I love the Allman Brothers so much, and mine does deliver that tone. But other guitars can as well and LP's are mostly overpriced for what they are. If it's a good deal, go for it, but don't buy it if its had a neck break repair.

Heavy, yes, but not as heavy as an ash Viper III. I agree that it looks like a '68 Reissue triburst.

Sometimes you get lucky. I didn't know squat about Telecasters and still don't. I bought this one used because "it looked cool". Totally worn to hell and somebody had autographed it in Sharpie right on the white body. But it played and sounded just fantastic. $400. I cleaned off the signature and had the guitar set up properly. The tech said it seemed "sorta old". Upon further research we found out that it is an original 1962 model. I've been offered over 5x what I paid for it.

Great deal, Dave. Sometimes it isn't just luck, but knowing what to do with it when it comes your way. Now, if that Tele had a rosewood neck and a tortoise PG, wow! Add some cowpie delay in your chain and you'll have some great rockabilly tone.

At first glance I would say it's fake cuz the book-matching is pretty decent...

;)

Seriously though, it looks like the right headstock from the front. Most fake Custom LPs I've seen have a rosewood fingerboard. I see 'em all the time at pawn shops.

a '62 would "should" have a R/wood fingerboard. That 6 saddle bridge is wrong too. For $400, who cares?

As for the Les Paul, it looks legit to me. Probably a reasonable price to flip. Personally I wouldn't want to own anything Gibson has put out within the last 40-odd years.

At last night's gig the guy who owned the venue had a new Gibson self-tuning "Robot" Les Paul. I was gracious enough to feign excitement while he raved about it. What a horribly expensive piece of over-engineered unnecessary crap it was.

Hard to go wrong at that price. Looks right but I would flip and look at the serial number.

Let me know if/when you get it, Stephen. I have an '01 Standard with Burstbucker Pros against which I'd like to compare it.

I keep going 'rounds in my head about Les Pauls.

Part of me wants one cause, well, they were the standard for lots of reasons. But then, when it comes down to actually buying one, I look at all the great, and arguably better guitars that can be had for a fraction of the price of a LP, and I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

Miles, you can get a bargain at a used price...the LP Customs are such an elegant guitar...my PRS probably is the more versatile and arguably better sounding of the two but there is something about the Les Paul that is just so familiar and cool...keep in mind that I have been playing one since 1975 and have owned 8 Customs and 1 Standard...Actually, after years of thinking bolt on necks were junk (before I owned one), Strats have become my favorite electrics...Something about a Strat and a Twin that is hard to beat!

" there is something about the Les Paul that is just so familiar and cool.."

I hear what'cha smell'in... I've never felt that way about Gibson or Strat's for that matter. My desire to have either/both is just for the nostalgia of where all the great guitars came from. We'll never know if all the copies would even exist today if it weren't for the originals, but that's how it is. The caveat is an LP with P-90's as I don't have anything with P-90's.

I'd love to find a decent neck for a strat I have.. it's a flat black "goth" strat that I currently have an Ovation neck on, but it would be fun to put an actual Fender neck bank on it.

Just waxing...

54 for 30? I'd bet that's a pretty good deal for folks hanging in that crowd, sort of like the F-40 for 65 at Barrett-Jackson's OC show this past spring.
