Did you know you can vote for more than one of us every day? (But only once a day)

Did you know that I don't care? Give it a rest. Those of us who wanted to vote, have. Why not make it an honest vote instead of stacking the deck?

Come on Moody, you're way off base here....it just levels the playin field.

Some of the videos in the contest aren't even with Ovation guitars and were obviously made years ago.

As long as I keep seeing the thread it reminds me to vote.....

and now I got TWO good reasons to do so.

You make a 100% valid point. Unfortunately, the contest is not an honest one. It blatantly tells the contestants to get all their friends to "stack the deck". It's obviously a promotional gimmick to get more people to hit Ovation's website.

But, being what it is, nothing wrong with trying to get a free Adamas out of it. I don't want to give it a rest until the contest is over, but I created this thread so that we didn't have to deal with more than one thread as more people joined the contest. I think that's reasonable.

Sorry to pester you with this thread, but the tutorial is slowly climbing and so are my hopes (though I'm still keeping them in check). The tutorial is now the 9th most viewed and 3rd most commented out of 107 entries. Keep those votes comin'!

(I'll think of some consolation prize for Moody having to see this thread pop up again and again ;-)

Thanks. There's a "view all" link under the video. When you click on that, there is a dropdown box where it says "Browse By". There you can select "Most Views" and "Most Comments" and see the rankings.

(I've noticed you have to pick your selection twice when switching views, cuz the first time it shows you the latest entries. The second time you select it it shows you the whole rankings).

You should see "Come Together" now at #2 for "Most Comments" and #7 for "Most Views". :-)

I've started to repeatedly run Joe's vid in da background whenever I'm on line. Not sure what the criteria are for ratcheting his 'viewed' numbers up top.

BTW, multi-comments are permitted.

The votes are what will win the contest, but the comments are a great indicator that people are voting!

I think in order to maintain our interest, you need to go ahead and record "Come Together" and upload it to this thread so we can hear the finished product.

I "know" you have a good mic!

That would be worth another 25-30 votes from me.

Update: I picked up one of the twelve Celebrities which has nothing to do with the grand prize, of course, but it's a nice nod from the O folks that they like the tutorial. They also reminded me in the email to make sure people keep voting! Some of you have been really encouraging (and voting for) me for which I am SO grateful. (There are a handful of you that have been commenting every day - I owe you guys one, no matter what!)

Y'all know I've always wanted but never quite found the right Adamas. Customizing one was way out of my means, but with the tutorial 2nd in views and 1st in comments, y'all are really getting me hopeful!

Also, I know a couple of you have asked asked for the whole song. I promise it's coming! It's the least I can do!

Thanks again and until then, please, please: DON'T STOP!!!

well, just an opinion but if the OFC members managed to push you into the grand prize, selling the celebrity and donating the money to the operation of the OFC forum would be a nice gesture.....(and I'm just proposing this IF and only IF you were to win the custom Adamas.... otherwise keep the Celeb).

just my generous 2 cents with someone else's prize.

Brad, it's one of the twelve celebrities, but I don't believe it's a twelve string. But yes, we're on our way!

Stephen, hmm... I like it! The OFC has helped me sell more than one guitar, and that would be a great way to show my appreciation not only to them but to all of us who are voting here.

Thanks for thinking of this. What do you say, everyone? Let's do this!

Congrats Joe.

I've spent quite a bit of time viewing the entries, and I genuinely believe that you and G8r have two of the best lessons in the contest… and that includes the "pro" submissions that are obviously there more for the purpose of promoting sales of their pre-existing video lessons than to win a guitar.

Keep voting folks!

Still voting. I don't think I've missed a day yet, since I started. I really like the contest idea, and the road tour. Sounds like the marketing guys are finally "getting it" I hope they continue the contest again, because it has really encouraged a lot of peole to post lessons ... and that's good for everyone.

I don't care if Joe beats me out, I just want one of us to surpass the damn "Stairway to Heaven" entry. I can't abide the idea that some Guitar Center wannabe superboy would beat out actual guitar players. Almost as badly cliche as "Blackbird".

I hope it's one of us (and as a matter of friendly competition I hope it's the guy with the T top fixation ;-), and I would definitely take issue if the Stairway entry wins because the sound dies early on, so right away it violates the guidelines of the contest. He's probably got a lot of views because first of all it's "stairway" (I know, I know), and second of all he appears to be one of several instructors that's just linking from their website (there are quite a few doing that). I sincerely hope the Adamas comes home to one of us faithful O lovers who are playing our hearts out fair and square!

Oh! And it is RED! [I just had a CC24, but I traded for the CSE24]

And now I can play a new song (Same chords as "Tuesday's Gone")...
I just have to listen to the song to learn the words.

Oh, yeah! Not to mention So Lonely (Police), I'm Goin' Down (Springsteen), and D'yer Maker (Zeppelin), just to name a few with that progression off the top of my head :-)

Okay... ONE little video! And my First one at that!
It's still up there if you look real hard.

And it will be Forever enshrined in Cyberspace until that MegaVirus destroys the net. :p

I have been voting but am cornfused (not unusual for me). If I click on the picks it says I must log in to vote.
So I log in and click on the picks and it says thank you for rating this video.
If I go to view all and sort by most popular neither Joe or G8r shows up. If I sort by most views, there they be.
I can find no vote button anywhere so by rating the video - is that considered a vote???

I think you can see the status of the "views" and "comments", but they keep the rating info to themselves.
You just gotta think that we're doing good and maintain the pace.
For a while it looked like we would never get past that "stairway" guy.

Nice guitar, OMA!! I wish that video was in sync. And despite the aversion to STH, there's a lot of people who would love to play it in open chords. You could already be a winner. I'd vote for you.

Still needing about 50 more votes to get G8r into at least second place. Anyone getting bored today? It would be nice to see us nudge our guys into the top 2 places. The Ring of Fire guy is working really hard along with his guitar students to hold onto that lead.

There are only a few days left.
It will all be over on the 12th. (it's about damn time)
However... any daily votes you can put in for our OFC members might make the difference.

Hey! Did y'all know that you can vote for yourself?
And vote once each for everyone you like?
Not like our Government elections which only let you vote once!
(Except for Illinois)

Bobbo sez "I'm sure your comment count would be MUCH higher had you done it topless."
You got a point there.
I got a topless version of Hotel California that I could post to compete with that red-haired chick.

Man!...G8r has been trailing that Ring of Fire video by less than 40 comments now for the past two weeks. You would think that we could muster up enough support to nudge him up into the second slot in one day.

Appreciate the support, Bryan, and everyone else. Remember, though, the "View" count is what matters, and it only registers as a "View" if you rate the video by clicking on the rating stars.

So... When this contest is over, I wonder if We will be able to view how many votes We received?

Just a little emotional pat on the head, Y'know?

I always tell people about how in the 70's students from the Berklee School of Performing Arts would come out to play (busk) on the streets. It was part of their Class. The money was how you kept score.
That was their little Pat on the Head for a good performance.

Like Vince typed... I don't believe that the views count unless you vote.
How can you decide if a video is worth looking at if you don't at least look?

I definitely hope that they leave these videos up for a good while after the contest is over.
I have only looked at a few of them, but this could be a useful library of lessons.

My understanding is that the votes, not the judges, not the views, and not the comments, win the contest. At least, that's what the rules say. I appreciate the confidence in some of the comments, but it ain't over till the fat lady, er, let's just call her the roundback lady, sings. ;-)

Keep the votes comin'. Just a couple more days and we're done. Either way, I'm keeping my promise to the OFC!

Sorry ... I don't plan in any way of making this a regular habit. I just thought I'd like to help someone snag a free new Custom Adamas, something many here could only dream about. If I had the talent needed, I would have went for it myself. But since I don't, I like the idea of trying to help someone make their dream become a reality. Best of luck to you guys that have thrown your hat into the ring.

Should we let Joe pick out his own guitar, or should we offer suggestions? I suggest we let him make up his own mind, as long as it's not another Elite T.

LOL. I'll be customizing the Adamas in a way that will surely please the minority and shock the majority. In the meantime, it's time to make room! Check the for sale section as I'll be unloading a Celeb and a couple of T's.

I was thinking that you can make an Adamas T...
Just tell them the keep the Flowers, Feathers, Leaves, or whatever-those-things-are.

Personally, I would just get a sorta puke-blue non-cutaway...
Or have them make me a textured top slot head with an updated Millennium fretboard...
since Pluto ain't a Planet anymore. :p

So Joe ... When do you get to place your order? ****It would be REALLY nice if the guys at the factory would do a photo post of the steps of the guitar's production as it progresses in real time*** (...and have it on the Ovation Guitars Web site. It would probably make for some more interesting marketing publicity)???

...Some YouTube video feed would also be very cool.

Oh, man! Good idea! I'll ask them to do that. Well, to answer your question, the order is already in. Light your torches, cuz here we go!

The reason I said my order would be sure to please the minority and shock the majority was because of one feature this guitar had to have, courtesy of a rotator cuff injury that I sustained about a year ago. After being forced to stop gigging (and after months of rest and therapy didn't help) I had to switch to a supershallow bowl in order to be able to play again (and for hours without the pain). So, at the cost of tone and volume but out of ergonomic necessity, this Adamas will be a supershallow.

So with that decision made for me (and truth be told the supershallow feels so good to an electric player like me that my shoulder feels like a blessing and a curse!), I wanted to build the best gigging guitar I could think of, so... drumroll please... I'm forgoing my Elite T fixation and taking the carbon top plunge at last! This, in addition to bass side epi's, should definitely give back a nice little bass punch.

The next decision will also probably get thumbs up and down, which is the neck width. I was an electric guitarist long before acoustic, so it's the thinnest neck possible for me. As for the fretboard, EBONY all the way. For vibratos and slides, to my fingers there is no comparison.

The preamp choice is also easy for me. The older pre's and the newer OP-PRO Studio and VIP for whatever reason don't sound as good plugged into through my gigging PA (Bose L1) as the tried and true OP-PRO, so that will be the one.

And of course there's the color. Everyone knows I love red, but before red my favorite color was black. After fluctuating back and forth between red and black, I thought why not combine the two. I've always loved the red to black burst on some of the glossy tops, but didn't know how it would look on a carbon top until I saw this:

Black Cherry Burst

Now I don't know about you all, but that's just about the baddest freaking color I've ever seen! Done deal! I want this color!

Finally, this IS a customized guitar that I never ever plan to sell, so I decided to give it something personal. I don't mean putting "J-U-K-E-B-O-X J-O-E" on the fretboard like the "S-E-V-E-N" on the Mick Thomson model! But just a little something that says me. I had an idea that they said they could do. But I think I'll save this one for the unveiling :-)

Well, there you have it, what I consider to be an absolute dream gigging guitar, and I'm still pinching myself in disbelief that I get to be the dreamer in this whole story.

A big THANK YOU again to everyone for your votes. As I promised check the For Sale section if you haven't already for my heartfelt thank you to the OFC!

Nice! That is truly custom (built just the way the customer wants it) and sure seems to we a winner for both sides. You get a one of a kind Adamas and Adamas shows off its abilities.

That color will sure look good next to that red Elite T. Have you ever tried out the contour bowl? It really does make the deep bowl comfortable to play, and to me it feels closer than a medium bowl. Which headstock are you going for? (or is that part of the top secret-thing? :)

I was thinking the same thing! In fact, it would look good next to either the red or black Elite T's, seeing as it will have both colors in the burst!

On the contour bowl, I couldn't agree more. I absolutlely love how it feels sitting down. The problem is, I can't play it standing up, where it actually feels farther away from me than the mid bowl, and I've already had to make the switch to shallow for my shoulder's sake.

On the headstock, no secret here. I actually like all of the O headstocks. (Yes, I like the brocolli, and yes, I like the slothead!) But I love the way the solid headstock looks with the Adamas stripes, complementing the SSB's more electric profile. (That being said, there will be a secret little something on the headstock's TRC) :-)

Primarily being a lurker, I've seen this thread but didn't investigate what it was about. Today I stopped by the Ovation website and it all, well, came together.

I'm always on the lookout for fun gigging songs but never really paid attention to this one, kind of listened through it when it came on the radio. But Joe has shown that it is incredibly simple for a solo to do, and I'm sure one or two people in any audience will be familiar with it. Maybe three. Gonna add it right away.

Thanks for a good idea, Joe.

If he's gotten it yet it would only have been in the last couple of days. It was on display at NAMM as the featured guitar in the Adamas case. Good looking, working musician's guitar.

I have not gotten it yet, but when I heard it was on display at NAMM, that didn't help my exercise in patience! I've looked everywhere for pictures to no avail. I have literally had to just not think about it for the last 3 months lest I lose my mind!

Pics, videos, and a lot of gushing as soon as I get it (well, probably 24 sleep deprived hours after, that is)!

Until then... guitar? what guitar? I have no idea what you're talking about.

Oh boy.

I wish they had time to take pictures of it before it was done so I could check it but apparently they wanted to get it done nice and quick. The 12th fret inlay was the suprise. It has my initials "J T" surrounding a little jukebox, in pearl, inlaid into the ebony.

But, it appears they put a pearl block background and then put the letters and images on top of that, making it look like there is a pearl strip on the 12 fret. :-/

I'm sure it doesn't look bad, but the effect I was going for was similar to the crown on the Kaki King 12th fret, but with a little jukebox.

I hope they can change it for me. I'll follow up as soon as I hear.

Thanks for posting the pics! Hopefully they can change that sonically insignificant but visually quite significant detail. The idea was to have the neck all black ebony with just the initials and the jukebox logo in pearl (not against a pearl background).

I don't want to complain, given that it's a custom guitar, but I hope they can do it.

Yeah, I would complain about a cosmetic detail on a free 5k custom Guitar too. Christ dude, maybe it was your sketchy description that was the problem and not the execution. Jeeeesus, some people are never happy. I saw the guitar at NAMM. It's very cool. The Iris or whatever laser carving on the TRC is very nice. Joe, accept your unique, one-of-kind free custom Adamas with good grace and quit fuckin' whining. Or, alternatively, ask for a refund.

Ouch, Paul. I know you don't know how friendly my phone conversations have been with Rick, or how much work we put into getting the graphics just right for a guitar neck, but dang. The builders got the TRC right but got the inlay in reverse for some reason, that's all. Rick is already looking into it for me. He's been really cool and has encouraged me to go for broke. Don't confuse me pointing out that the inlay came out wrong with the fact that I'm already happier than you can possibly imagine at having the priviledge to design it! (But if you had an empty guitar spec sheet with 5k to design it any way you wanted, wouldn't you see it through to the end?)

Joe, Many of us got to see your guitar hanging in the bong at NAMM.
Adam pointed out the personal touches and their meanings.
Those little unique touches are what makes that guitar, your guitar.

I applaud you!
Not only for a great video, but with all the options available to you... you spec'd out a very understated, playable guitar, with a handful of personal cosmetic touches. The guitar looks great.

This custom guitar is not a freebie (a 1099 is attached).
It is your compensation for making and submitting the best video and allowing the manufacturer to use photos of you and the guitar for advertisement (whatever the fine print says).

If the 12th fret inlay is not right, give them a chance and they will make it right.

Considering that all of the other personal touches on your guitar were executed in such an elegant understated fashion, I believe that your description and expectation of the 12th fret inlay (pearl initials & pearl jukebox logo in the ebony fretboard) were as you described. It makes sense and fits everything else on your guitar.

Making a new pearl-on-ebony inlay to replace the ebony-on-pearl inlay should not be a big deal.

figure state sales tax where you live and federal income tax

I don't know if you noticed, but most price offerings are under $600. That's because you don't need to report it if it's under that amount. I've been pretty lucky, I've won stuff from seymour duncan, bbe, planet waves and mxr, and each time it's below that amount. About half the stuff I've sold and the rest I've kept. If it wasn't for the prizes I'd have no guitar pedals.

I think ovation should do a monthly prize under $600 and see what happens.

It were me, I'd just say thanks. If after a while I didn't like it, I'd put it on ebay ... but I'd probably keep it just for bragging rights.

They should send Joe his guitar in $600 pieces...one piece a year until he gets it all. That'll teach the friggin' IRS!

We have any IRS people as OFCers? If so I smell an audit in an4340's future.
Personally, I've always reported all my income, never won anything, and I send in a little extra just for good measure, in case anyone from the IRS is reading this thread.

A recent IRS study shows that the car of choice for most tax cheats is a Porsche, not that that means anything.

"Por-sha"?? Wasn't she a character is some Shakespearean play? The one that's all about money and the weight of skin and musculature? ;) (Actually, kind of relevant to the turn the thread has taken......)
Look at it this way--even if Joe does have to play taxes on it, he still couldn't get one made to order for whatever he does end up playing....

I'm no accountant but I've stayed in a Holiday Inn Express. Go ahead and declare the income Joe, but write off your guitars, the camera, all of your accessories, and everything else involved in making the video. You'll probably get money back.

BTW, the inlaid jukebox really does look like a jukebox. They did a nice job with the whole thing. Personally, I like the block inlay. It's got that classic Ovation limited edition thing going on like so many of the others. But it's your guitar, so there you go. And that's that.

And yeah, it looks way better in person than it did in my iPhone camera snaps.

Noah, thanks!
Karen, good point! Taxes suck, but those are taxes I'd be glad to pay.
Bobbo, good point too! And, yeah I wish I could see it in person. Soon enough I will, and we'll either stay with the block inlay or go with the original idea. Either route it's gonna look amazing in person, but those pics are teasing me to no end!

Pics and videos as soon as I get her!

Joe, if it's anything close to the OFC II, it will be worth the wait...
Congrats again!

It's a totally different set up than the OFC 2 ... just about everything is different except for the bowl color. So I'd expect it to paint in a whole different color palette. Still will make a pretty picture I think.
