Some of the videos in the contest aren't even with Ovation guitars and were obviously made years ago.
As long as I keep seeing the thread it reminds me to vote.....
and now I got TWO good reasons to do so. |

Unfortunately, the contest is not an honest one. It blatantly tells the contestants to get all their friends to "stack the deck". It's obviously a promotional gimmick to get more people to hit Ovation's website.
But, being what it is, nothing wrong with trying to get a free Adamas out of it. I don't want to give it a rest until the contest is over, but I created this thread so that we didn't have to deal with more than one thread as more people joined the contest. I think that's reasonable. |

(I've noticed you have to pick your selection twice when switching views, cuz the first time it shows you the latest entries. The second time you select it it shows you the whole rankings).
You should see "Come Together" now at #2 for "Most Comments" and #7 for "Most Views". :-) |

They also reminded me in the email to make sure people keep voting! Some of you have been really encouraging (and voting for) me for which I am SO grateful. (There are a handful of you that have been commenting every day - I owe you guys one, no matter what!)
Y'all know I've always wanted but never quite found the right Adamas. Customizing one was way out of my means, but with the tutorial 2nd in views and 1st in comments, y'all are really getting me hopeful!
Also, I know a couple of you have asked asked for the whole song. I promise it's coming! It's the least I can do!
Thanks again and until then, please, please: DON'T STOP!!! |

I've spent quite a bit of time viewing the entries, and I genuinely believe that you and G8r have two of the best lessons in the contest… and that includes the "pro" submissions that are obviously there more for the purpose of promoting sales of their pre-existing video lessons than to win a guitar.
Keep voting folks!

bvince: yeah, that was funny. I feel her licking my elbow in the middle of the song and I was thinking she ruined a take. Then I figured, what the heck. Maybe the puppy will get me more votes! LOL
G8r: Thanks! I feel the same, my friend. I hope it's one of us (and as a matter of friendly competition I hope it's the guy with the T top fixation ;-), and I would definitely take issue if the Stairway entry wins because the sound dies early on, so right away it violates the guidelines of the contest. He's probably got a lot of views because first of all it's "stairway" (I know, I know), and second of all he appears to be one of several instructors that's just linking from their website (there are quite a few doing that). I sincerely hope the Adamas comes home to one of us faithful O lovers who are playing our hearts out fair and square! |

Just a little emotional pat on the head, Y'know?
I always tell people about how in the 70's students from the Berklee School of Performing Arts would come out to play (busk) on the streets. It was part of their Class. The money was how you kept score.
That was their little Pat on the Head for a good performance. |

How can you decide if a video is worth looking at if you don't at least look?
I definitely hope that they leave these videos up for a good while after the contest is over.
I have only looked at a few of them, but this could be a useful library of lessons. |

I'll be customizing the Adamas in a way that will surely please the minority and shock the majority. In the meantime, it's time to make room! Check the for sale section as I'll be unloading a Celeb and a couple of T's. |

Just tell them the keep the Flowers, Feathers, Leaves, or whatever-those-things-are.
Personally, I would just get a sorta puke-blue non-cutaway...
Or have them make me a textured top slot head with an updated Millennium fretboard...
since Pluto ain't a Planet anymore. :p |

When do you get to place your order? ****It would be REALLY nice if the guys at the factory would do a photo post of the steps of the guitar's production as it progresses in real time*** (...and have it on the Ovation Guitars Web site. It would probably make for some more interesting marketing publicity)???
...Some YouTube video feed would also be very cool. |

Location: Miami | Oh, man! Good idea! I'll ask them to do that. Well, to answer your question, the order is already in. Light your torches, cuz here we go!
The reason I said my order would be sure to please the minority and shock the majority was because of one feature this guitar had to have, courtesy of a rotator cuff injury that I sustained about a year ago. After being forced to stop gigging (and after months of rest and therapy didn't help) I had to switch to a supershallow bowl in order to be able to play again (and for hours without the pain). So, at the cost of tone and volume but out of ergonomic necessity, this Adamas will be a supershallow.
So with that decision made for me (and truth be told the supershallow feels so good to an electric player like me that my shoulder feels like a blessing and a curse!), I wanted to build the best gigging guitar I could think of, so... drumroll please... I'm forgoing my Elite T fixation and taking the carbon top plunge at last! This, in addition to bass side epi's, should definitely give back a nice little bass punch.
The next decision will also probably get thumbs up and down, which is the neck width. I was an electric guitarist long before acoustic, so it's the thinnest neck possible for me. As for the fretboard, EBONY all the way. For vibratos and slides, to my fingers there is no comparison.
The preamp choice is also easy for me. The older pre's and the newer OP-PRO Studio and VIP for whatever reason don't sound as good plugged into through my gigging PA (Bose L1) as the tried and true OP-PRO, so that will be the one.
And of course there's the color. Everyone knows I love red, but before red my favorite color was black. After fluctuating back and forth between red and black, I thought why not combine the two. I've always loved the red to black burst on some of the glossy tops, but didn't know how it would look on a carbon top until I saw this:
Black Cherry Burst
Now I don't know about you all, but that's just about the baddest freaking color I've ever seen! Done deal! I want this color!
Finally, this IS a customized guitar that I never ever plan to sell, so I decided to give it something personal. I don't mean putting "J-U-K-E-B-O-X J-O-E" on the fretboard like the "S-E-V-E-N" on the Mick Thomson model! But just a little something that says me. I had an idea that they said they could do. But I think I'll save this one for the unveiling :-)
Well, there you have it, what I consider to be an absolute dream gigging guitar, and I'm still pinching myself in disbelief that I get to be the dreamer in this whole story.
A big THANK YOU again to everyone for your votes. As I promised check the For Sale section if you haven't already for my heartfelt thank you to the OFC! |

It really does make the deep bowl comfortable to play, and to me it feels closer than a medium bowl. Which headstock are you going for? (or is that part of the top secret-thing? :) |

On the contour bowl, I couldn't agree more. I absolutlely love how it feels sitting down. The problem is, I can't play it standing up, where it actually feels farther away from me than the mid bowl, and I've already had to make the switch to shallow for my shoulder's sake.
On the headstock, no secret here. I actually like all of the O headstocks. (Yes, I like the brocolli, and yes, I like the slothead!) But I love the way the solid headstock looks with the Adamas stripes, complementing the SSB's more electric profile. (That being said, there will be a secret little something on the headstock's TRC) :-) |

| Primarily being a lurker, I've seen this thread but didn't investigate what it was about. Today I stopped by the Ovation website and it all, well, came together.
I'm always on the lookout for fun gigging songs but never really paid attention to this one, kind of listened through it when it came on the radio. But Joe has shown that it is incredibly simple for a solo to do, and I'm sure one or two people in any audience will be familiar with it. Maybe three. Gonna add it right away.
Thanks for a good idea, Joe. |

I wish they had time to take pictures of it before it was done so I could check it but apparently they wanted to get it done nice and quick. The 12th fret inlay was the suprise. It has my initials "J T" surrounding a little jukebox, in pearl, inlaid into the ebony.
But, it appears they put a pearl block background and then put the letters and images on top of that, making it look like there is a pearl strip on the 12 fret. :-/
I'm sure it doesn't look bad, but the effect I was going for was similar to the crown on the Kaki King 12th fret, but with a little jukebox.
I hope they can change it for me. I'll follow up as soon as I hear. |

Location: Miami | Thanks for posting the pics! Hopefully they can change that sonically insignificant but visually quite significant detail. The idea was to have the neck all black ebony with just the initials and the jukebox logo in pearl (not against a pearl background).
I don't want to complain, given that it's a custom guitar, but I hope they can do it. |

Jeeeesus, some people are never happy. I saw the guitar at NAMM. It's very cool. The Iris or whatever laser carving on the TRC is very nice. Joe, accept your unique, one-of-kind free custom Adamas with good grace and quit fuckin' whining. Or, alternatively, ask for a refund. |

The builders got the TRC right but got the inlay in reverse for some reason, that's all. Rick is already looking into it for me. He's been really cool and has encouraged me to go for broke. Don't confuse me pointing out that the inlay came out wrong with the fact that I'm already happier than you can possibly imagine at having the priviledge to design it! (But if you had an empty guitar spec sheet with 5k to design it any way you wanted, wouldn't you see it through to the end?) |

Adam pointed out the personal touches and their meanings.
Those little unique touches are what makes that guitar, your guitar.
I applaud you!
Not only for a great video, but with all the options available to you... you spec'd out a very understated, playable guitar, with a handful of personal cosmetic touches. The guitar looks great.
This custom guitar is not a freebie (a 1099 is attached).
It is your compensation for making and submitting the best video and allowing the manufacturer to use photos of you and the guitar for advertisement (whatever the fine print says).
If the 12th fret inlay is not right, give them a chance and they will make it right.
Considering that all of the other personal touches on your guitar were executed in such an elegant understated fashion, I believe that your description and expectation of the 12th fret inlay (pearl initials & pearl jukebox logo in the ebony fretboard) were as you described. It makes sense and fits everything else on your guitar.
Making a new pearl-on-ebony inlay to replace the ebony-on-pearl inlay should not be a big deal. |

That's because you don't need to report it if it's under that amount. I've been pretty lucky, I've won stuff from seymour duncan, bbe, planet waves and mxr, and each time it's below that amount. About half the stuff I've sold and the rest I've kept. If it wasn't for the prizes I'd have no guitar pedals.
I think ovation should do a monthly prize under $600 and see what happens.
It were me, I'd just say thanks. If after a while I didn't like it, I'd put it on ebay ... but I'd probably keep it just for bragging rights. |

BTW, the inlaid jukebox really does look like a jukebox. They did a nice job with the whole thing. Personally, I like the block inlay. It's got that classic Ovation limited edition thing going on like so many of the others. But it's your guitar, so there you go. And that's that.
And yeah, it looks way better in person than it did in my iPhone camera snaps. |

Karen, good point! Taxes suck, but those are taxes I'd be glad to pay.
Bobbo, good point too! And, yeah I wish I could see it in person. Soon enough I will, and we'll either stay with the block inlay or go with the original idea. Either route it's gonna look amazing in person, but those pics are teasing me to no end!
