Sometimes we get all caught up with new guitars and different sounds and we forget about older guitars.

For a few years, I wasn't happy with the sound of my 1537. I was trying different strings and got away from what works best (medium gauge 80/20 bronze -- take your pick as to brand). These give the guitar a deep sound while still sounding crisp.

As a result, I've been playing it more, and damned if I'm not getting unsolicited comments on how beautiful the guitar is and how good it sounds.

It's good to be reminded of how good old friends really are.....

I receive frequent comments about the looks of my guitars, but the only three for which I've ever received gushing comments on sound are the Tak75, VXT and the EA Viper 12. SWMBO continues to believe that the best sounding guitar of the bunch is the 1778-RF flamer. I believe most of them sound so consistently good that it is nearly impossible to pick a winner if only considering sound. Accordingly, I give a lot of weight to playability, and this is where the SSBs and thin bodied hybrids gain the edge.

I still maintain that the 1537 is among the very best Ovation, including Adamas, has ever produced. It's just a wonderful sound.
I owned two at one point and they both sounded fantastic.
If only a wide neck. . .

Bill was going to convert a 1547 to a wide neck a couple of years ago. Wonder what happened with that project?

"If only a wide neck. . ."

... combined with a slothead and suspension ring, and the fancy Adamas bridge! (:

I would like to have a cutaway 1547 some day :) If there is one for sale, please send me a PM.

My 1537 just came back 3 weeks ago from the factory. I agree, the sound is great with medium strings.

Jeff, I agree!!! My 1537-5, besides being an extremely rare color, sounds incredible (in difference to ST28's memory  ) and looks like a million bucks as well...Awesome guitars*...

I'll get to it one day

you just can't do all your "to do" list in one day, then there's nothing to do tomorrow.

Stephen, I think we can both agree that these are very special guitars...I've owned many Elites over the years and none sounded as good as a 1537...the -4 I owned several years ago also sounded really fine...to my ear, there is something really special about the older Ovations: my Patriot and Pacemaker are also extremely fine sounding Ovation's and both are over 30 years old...

OK, I'll pee in the pool ...

I owned two 1537's and fostered a third one. As nice as they were, I just never quite bonded with this model. I think it's a guitar with great projection and sounds exceptional to hear someone else play it AT you. But I play mostly for myself and from the players position it sounded to me somewhat lifeless compared to some other guitars. Personal preference, I know.

Nice guitar, no doubt about it. It just never quite reached the Ga-Ga status for me. Now a LIGHT weight version, with 12 fret truss rod neck in 1-3/4 width, acoustic only, ... Hmmm that could be a whole different ball game.

LIGHT would be a key factor for me.
The 1537 was/is a heavy sucker.

Definitely the LesPaul of the Ovation line ... but that's probably a major contributing factor to making it sound like it does.

I thought maybe he meant that it is a Heavy sucker.

Personally, I have never handled a 1537...
But I had it's cheaper brother, the 1718, and it was heavy also.

Nice part of the postings is that it reminds me to take the Ax-Jacket off it and start playing the pre-production 1537 that I got from Beal again.

It is a 'classic', a 'keeper'.

Mine was the first really good Ovation I ever played, rescued by Noah and adopted by me after I apparently passed Noah's extensive interview. I had planned to give it to my daughter for the 25th anniversary of her birth in 1983, but couldn't part with it. It doesn't get played much, but will this evening. Interesting that it is so heavy, but has the lightest touch of any of my Ovations.

Everyone who hears mine thinks it's the best sounding of my Os. I only play it on rare occasions and usually acoustically when singing and playing on my own (which is rare these days).

I'm usually the lead guy when playing with others and the 1537 isn't the best for that.

I wouldn't mind having a try at a 1547 one of these days. I always though that would be my ultimate O.
