John Lennon's birthday came and passed (yesterday) without mention here. Interesting that one of the most influential singer/songwriter/guitarists of the 20th century slipped silently passed.

A happy birthday mention is certainly not for his benefit but to remind all to whom music is important and necessary that one of the great ones passed far too young. Happy Birthday John.

I have been very aware of it.
How could not not be? It's been all over the media.
Even looking forward to the Lennon bio-pic later this month.
.
Perhaps the board was focused with other important matters.

Interesting. Every musician I've ever seen interviewed, major or minor, acknowledges that the Beatles (aka John Lennon) had a major influence on them and their music. He, as a song-writer, singer, guitarist and member of the most influential band of the past century, changed the direction of popular music. That includes every genre of contemporary music for the past 40 years. So you don't have to be a fan of his, but simply a fan of music (which you must be unless you are here simply as a collector of guitars) to appreciate his contribution to music. Unless, of course, you are 10 and don't know the music world and its development at all.

Guess you never interviewed me either. There are some Beatles songs I like. Much more interested in the stuff McCartney, Harrison and Ringo did after they broke up. Sorry, I don't get the Lennon thing either. The Beatles and specifically Lennon do get mentioned as a major influence for many.... and I still don't understand why.

I think it's more because the Beatles had such an influence on pop music in general. The number of songs they had in airplay was enough to produce hundreds of bands trying to capture their sound. The problem was, they kept changing that sound. A moving target is hard to hit.
There were many other bands that also had a hand in what rock sounds like today, but none seemed to have had the wide appeal of the Beatles.
While many of the Lennon Beatles songs are among my favorites, his post-Beatles music (other than a select few songs - Instant Karma, #9 Dream, Watchin the Wheels) never really did anything for me other than depress me. He always put down the notion that being part of the Beatles drove his creativity, but the quality of the material he produced after the breakup says otherwise.
Of course, he's frozen in time now. We never got to see what he might have done as he aged, mellowed and got off his social change bandwagon. Maybe written more songs the caliber of "Dear Prudence" and "Day In The Life"?

And DenverSteve... I doubt most Beatle fans have heard many of the post-beatle songs you have listed. We got tired of being screamed at and preached to by a very troubled and drugged-up pop star with an over-inflated view of his own influence. His 'legend' is more nostalgia than substance.

In solo careers, I'll take any of the other 3 over Lennon.

Again TRULY no disrespect meant here. I agree with dark bar. Lennon was overrated, I think. I say this fully aware that I could be wrong.

Like Mr. Ovation, I liked a few of their songs, but none were favorites. However, where my cavil lies is in the adulation for Lennon as social commentator. I think that if you were to take all his lyrics out of the realm of social commentary, then he wouldn't be nearly as admired as he is today. In other words, I don't think that the adulation for him is based on his music as much as on the perception of Lennon as the primary spokesman for some gauzy, ill-defined, amorphous vision of I-like-you-you-like-me, ephemeral vision of "world peace."

Also, JMHO, none of his melodies were anything all that remarkable, or sophisticated or ground-breaking, or, more importantly, worthy of singling out as a major contribution to music in general.

There were, I think, two major "indictments" of Lennon as important contributor to art or public policy: (1) the song CONSTANTLY mentioned as his finest legacy, "Imagine," always struck me as a good candidate for the most inane, insipid, silly, just-plain-dumb song ever written. (2) A song I always liked (for its melody) was "Give Peace a Chance."

Some of the lyrics for "Give Pdace a Chance' were: "All we are saying is give peace a chance." I'm pretty sure that I was not alone in recognizing that that was pretty much all they were saying.

I figured that if they brought their wide-eyed idealism to some of the major actors of the time, these people would have recognized them for what they were: useful idiots in the west.

I'm thinking of, of course, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Saddam Hussein (in power as of 1968), Brezhnev, Mao, etc...some of the most vicious tyrants of the century. Again, all they were saying was, "give peace a chance." And yet, these songs are the ones most highlighted as the bulk of Lennon's legacy.

And, lest one say that I'm reading too much into it, Lennon himself viewed himself as a major commentator on his times, and on the personalities mentioned above.

I was underwhelmed.

Well, I would say his influence, and the Beatles as a whole, is HUGE. Of course, people who die too young or in a tragic way are usually overrated. As single artists, I would agree with
Waskel that I find the work of the other three as post Beatles much more interesting. I would have liked to see, once he removed himself from the self-imposed cross, what music John Lennon would have produced. Too much of his post Beatles music focused on John the activist celebrity, instead of John the songwriter and singer. He produced a lot of crap on his post Beales albums, and a few very good songs. Personally, I love the Beatles music and the play it all the time. Also, post Beatles music by Harrison, especially, can be found all over my ipod.

I admire John Lennon's contribution to music. I've never thought of him as anything but a great poet and writer. Whether he is considered to be the spokesperson for a "gauzy, ill-defined, amorphous vision of I-like-you-you-like-me, ephemeral vision of world peace." I don't know. However I respect anyone who advocates for peace, equality and world harmony. Advocates for such noble causes plant the seeds for others to act upon, they don't actually create world peace or harmony. John's membership in the "fab four" - I believe - leaves, even today, an undeniable presence in modern music.

Well as my mother would always say, there is chocolate AND vanilla.

Lennon choose to use his celebrity to bring attention to the causes he felt most strongly about. world peace, the end of war etc. Idealistic, perhaps but an intentional effort to focus on the needs of the world and its inhabitants as a whole.

Lennon was always my favorite Beatle, the one I felt was the most honest and had the most edge. McCartney's songs lost something without John's edge to drive them.

With that being said he also took risks. Doing music with Yoko, and trying to take things to another level. When you bought a solo Lennon LP you never got the feeling that any of the songs were written with the intention of being on the radio or being hits but they were there and just stood out for you to evaluate and enjoy or not.

With that said, yes not all of the stuff was listenable. And some outright horrible, if you take away the "artistic" part of the equation. But I am glad that he did it, even those records opened my mind to listen to composers that were not in the norm and unconventional.

I too think the iconic level that he is held at is rather uncomfortable and I would venture to say that he would also think so too, but again he used his celebrity to influence causes that were near to him. did it work, well probably not but then again if we look at the regard in which he is currently held then it did work. His message and legacy of world peace is brought out at any opportunity to promote it. Rather powerful IMHO.

I saw a blurb on Nobel and his prize. He invented many things that most influential was TNT. When his brother died the newspaper mistook it for him and call him the biggest merchant of death to modern man. He saw that as a sign to do something and directed his money in the Nobel prize which promoted literature, science, and ultimately peace.

Lennon did not need to do this. He lived his legacy and it followed him

Underwhelmed? perhaps but you and I should be so lucky

alpep: agreed, and thanks for the additional perspective. I feel that I should add: to murder him was just a horrible thing.

I agree that it's just a good thing to try to promote world peace, or diminish violence, or defeat hunger and disease, and that, effective or not, those who work sincerely toward those goals should be applauded.

There is no indication that Lennon was anything but sincere.

No disrespect, but peoples legacy usually tends to get inflated when they pass away. More so if the death is a tragic one before it's time. Lennon, Croce, Denver, Morrison, Coban, Hendrix, etc. would never have achieved the notoriety they did had they still been alive. That's the way I see it.

hmm...someone who influenced his generation, still inspires admiration (and derision) in generations following his early and untimely death at the hands of another, and whose main message was that we're all in this together and should try to live in peace...where have I heard that before? Most underwhelming, for sure.

I, too, have one of Woodrow's guitars. So I'm ready for his passing.

I always thought the Lennon needed McCartney and vise versa. They balanced each other. Separately, neither of them appealed to me that much.

On his own, while I admired Lennon's passion for his causes, his music did nothing for me......

Lennon and McCartney are already up there with the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century. Nobody's opinion will change this.
Record sales and radio plays and cover versions prove this beyond doubt.

I was a great fan, aged 11, of the first album and all the way through to Rubber Soul. After that I lost interest. But what does history care about what you or I think?

On a personal level I think Lennon and McCartney were/are assholes. Ringo is Ringo and George was plainly the most interesting and in terms of individual talent maybe the best. He certainly didn't have Lennon's talent for self-promotion and he certainly didn't have Lennon's talent for punching women. But hey, nobody's perfect.
And Mull of Kintyre and The Frog Song should condemn McCartney to songwriter's hell for eternity.

I looked for a good YT video of the memorial party at Strawberry Fields...
When I couldn't find one, I gave up on posting of John's death.
I have a bunch of Beatles music on my computer that I never listen to.
I met John multiple times in NYC, and he wouldn't give us any change.
We actually talked to him at length from our doorstep on Bleecker Street.
Seems like a nice enough chap though, when you got him alone. Just Cheap.
Not to speak ill of the dead (but I am about to)
John had an over-inflated sense of his own importance.
Do I really care to see you having a Bed-In for Peace?
Like Dave sez, Many an artist's standing is raised in Death.
Even more so in Martyrdom.
George Harrison is Dead too... Is there gonna be a big party for his birthday?

"The Beatles" were influential to so many people because they were so well Marketed.
Frank Zappa made a profound social statement with his parody of the Sgt. Pepper's album cover! :p

Better writers and musicians had gone before and after and did not get the recognition that Lennon and the Beatles received. Never a Beatles or Lennon fan. In my mind, just better promotion than other groups. Of the 4, Harrison was my favorite. The quiet Beatle. Yes, sorry Lennon is gone, and sorry about the way he dies, but he is dead. Lets get on with our lives.....

Gee Al... Let's see. John Died 30 Years ago.
I believe that I last talked to John in November of 1978.
We were sitting outside of Gillie's Pub (now defunct), listening to music, drinking beer and bumming more beer.
We did that Often, when we weren't doing the same thing outside of CBGB's or the Other End.
And nowhere in that post did I say that we were 'pissed' at John.
We met him multiple times because he would play at Gillie's with Yoko and David Peel.

But I still need a Job, which is why I am busking for rent money.

I'll always remember the day Lennon was killed.

I was the hospital in Landstuhl Germany recovering from some gunshot wounds and was still fading in and out of consciousness when I overheard a doctor telling a nurse about someone dying from gunshot wounds. I couldn't fully wake up or move although I could partially hear voices floating past me.
I just laid there saying to myself, "Well, I guess I'm dead. This is really strange." Then I totally passed out.

Two days later I finally woke up and found out they were talking about John Lennon and not me.

I listened to and liked Croce and Denver while they were alive. Still like them. The others, including Lennon and add Janis Joplin, I didn't like so much when they were alive and didn't like them any more after they were dead. I liked Eva Cassidy's voice the first time I heard it and I didn't know she was dead. So I don't fit Dave's theory, but I don't usually fit most.

Heard two versions of "Working Class Hero" on the radio today (not by JL, but excellent covers...).

A brilliant song and a personal fave from an often mis-understood artist.

It's sad that perhaps his last contribution to the music industry is the way that artists relate to their 'fans' in public... Multiple bodyguards, almost always 'tooled up' and anyone getting too enthusiastic at close quarters is likely to get hurt... Better safe than sorry.

R.I.P. John

1963: first heard the Beatles on WGH AM radio in Newport News, VA. on my Silvertone transistor radio...I was 11 and it changed my life...but it was the Beatles Music and the band as a unit that did that not the individuals...
I agree completely with Schroeder on this: I also moved on to other groups and other Genre's...I became enthusiastic about the singer songwriters: Taylor, Croce, Denver, Stephens, Chapin, Young, Prine, all of whom left an indelible impression on my life and music.
I remember Lennon's death because my band had just come off of the road after 2 years and we met at the apartment in Richmond, VA of our bass player to hold a memorial of our own: not because we idolized him, but rather because we felt that a part of our innocence and youth had passed along with Lennon. Truthfully: Chapin, Croce, and Denver's deaths affected me much deeper on a musical level than did Lennon's...
I watched the last part of the 1972 Concert at Madison Square Garden last night on Pladia...Sorry but I thought is was a complete waste of time...horrible and hard to listen to...an exercise in excess...but at least it reminded of what a talent George Harrison was ...Lennon's post Beatles rant/romp with Yoko just never resonated with me and still doesn't...however, he lives on in Julian who is the spitting image of his father.
Rest in Peace John...
YMMV

"Imagine" was the first song I learned back then when he was alive.
At that time all we needed to get a nice girl was a geetar, a song and a t-shirt with the right message on it.
With "Imagine" I had all the three.

Those were the days...

What anoys me the most is not the good guys who are gone, but those Bad Guys lurking around the corner, who are always coming back for one more round.

There was a time when knowing 'who's your favourite Beatle?' told you as much as you could know about another person.

When they were still together it was George for me.
Later it was John.

and until I 'got' that Silly Love Songs was
more than semi-literate, I decided to like Paul too.

.....but who can't LOVE Ringo?

But well marketed, hard working guys? You'll never find better. I always loved the quote from John about the "Tune in, turn on, drop out '60s"
"Are you kidding? We worked our ASSES off!"

Arthur I think that it is disgusting to call rich people cheap. it is not the case. Wealthy people pay more taxes that support food stamps welfare and disability and they the super rich often have foundations and such that support the causes that they want to promote.

Perhaps if you are pestering people on Bleeker especially John Lennon and he gave you a dollar then he would have a trial of people wanting a dollar from John Lennon. I think it was John's internal survival skills that made him possible to live in NYC and not get pestered and what ultimately did him in at the end.

I have several customers that are very wealthy and I treat them the same way I would anyone else with courtesy and respect. Nothing special and they don't demand any more. I don't charge more because they can afford it and I don't make a big deal out of anything.

At one point in my life I was ill my wife on her death's bed in the hspt and other stuff was piling up. I get a call from one of these guys who was just checking in and well I spilled my guts, I needed someone to talk to and he was the one. A few days later he called me back to see how things were and offered to help me out. He wanted to know if he could pay my mortgage. Not the payment the ENTIRE MORTGAGE. I was floored and declined but thanked him and assured him that if I needed some help I would indeed call him.
Well I never did, I just got up earlier in the day and stayed up later worked harder, sold some stuff that I should have kept for less than it was worth and worked through the hard times.

Ultimately, you are responsible for yourself no one else. Unfortunately there will always be an element of society that for whatever reason is indigent either by legitimate or illegitimate means but anyone with a sense of pride takes care of their self and their family.

Thank You Al...

But I made one statement about John not giving me change.
And BTW-- The first time we met John, I didn't know he was John Lennon.
He just looked like a normal person, no entourage, no press.
Mr. Lennon used to intentionally stop to talk to us cuz we didn't treat him like anything special.
We shared our beer with him. (You could get a 12-pack for about $3 back then)
I never asked him for an autograph, we mostly talked about ourselves cuz he was interested.
He did pay for our beer once at the local Mom & Pop store down the street.
But he still wouldn't give us any change.
He said "My wife doesn't let me carry money. All I got is Plastic!"

Also... Years of experience has taught me Rich People Are Cheap.
Poor People will give you the last pennies in their pocket cuz they have "been there".
I know that I will.
Rich people will tell you to get a Job.
Rich people were cheap in the Past.(Mark 12:41-44)
Rich people will be cheap in the Future.(Check-out the current financial crisis)
Rich people look at High Unemployment as an opportunity to lower wages.
Rich people are Jealous that Poor People might get surplus food for free.
It is the nature of the Beast.
The more someone has, the cheaper they get!

your story has now morphed 3 times.

although I will never be rich I do not share your thoughts on "the rich" I think they are generalizations and oversimplifications.

can you say the same about the poor?
the more poor someone is the more they expect someone else to bail them out?

the poor will tell you they are starving "artists" and should not have to work.

the poor will tell you it is a sin to make a living.

the poor look at the high unemployment as an excuse to do nothing.

The poor are jealous that they can't afford fine dining?

This is sarcasm but damn why throw stones at either side?

At one particularly low point in my life, I had a co worker who's husband was very well to do (she really did not need the work but loved teaching) put a 100 dollar bill in a christmas card with the instructions to take my wife out to dinner buy her something she wants and have a good time on her. I tried to give it back to her but she insisted. My wife and I had a really good dinner on my friend and our mind was taken away from our troubles.

I think when charity comes when least expected it is the most valuable. Kinda nice to have people thinking about you and caring.

I have no problem with cheese. It's all the pork I don't like.

I can't stop and give change to every panhandler I come across. I most times stop and consider donating to a street performer if they are sincere and giving it serious effort.

But I ALWAYS stop and buy a glass of lemonade or kool-aid, or art, or gummy bears or whatever it is that some young kid has set up a curbside stand to try and make a little money. Encourage entrepreneurship.

Imagine no possessions. There's two sides to that one.

OMA, where do you get this tripe????

I was monetarily rich once but due to unforseen medical issues with both my daughter and wife (at separate times) that well exceeded my health insurance policy limits, I am now borderline poor.

I was definitely more generous when I had the means to be. I frequently donated both time and money to various organizations. Now I have no discretionary funds to give to others....I have to take care of my own.

Your generalizations about the rich are just as bogus as the generalizations about the poor.

If you are out of work, you are a lazy no good for nothing bum that is just living off the government while waiting for your next handout or welfare check.

Sound familiar?

People are people... whether rich or poor most of them would act and be the exact same way whether they had money or not.

Personally, I resent your playbook generalizations concerning people who happen to have more money than you. I was poor, when I was young. Then I worked. My ass off. Now I enjoy the fruits of that labor, and I'm supposed to feel guilty about it?

This is over the top I just don't know what to say. Being in law enforcement for years I have seen just about everything to make you smile or a billy goat sick. By now most people know I am disabled on this thread. Karen and I bought our house through a mortgage company that was stealing the money. We were given an eviction notice because our house was going to sheriff's sale, at no fault of ours. I receive limited income, Karen's 18 year job at ford moved to Mexico. She is getting gov't assistance to pay for nursing school, which she graduates in May. She is also working full time at the hospital. My Neighbor, a Doctor, thought so much about us that he bought the house at the Sheriff's sale and is now selling it to us on contract until our money gets more flexible. Just like the only reason I was able to buy a preacher and viper was because Iffy sold it to me on the Iffy pay as you may plan. So The lesson learned is:
There are two types of people in the world and only two. Good people and bad people. And that's it. It does not matter if you have money or not, you are either a bad person or a good person.

Back to music:

Gonzaguinha - Youtube

He sings, to the end of the song:

"Dê senhor uma esmola
A um pobre que é são
Ou lhe mata de vergonha
Ou vicia o cidadão"

In a loose translation:

If you give money (alms?) for free to a healthy poor person, you either will ashame them or you will give them a bad habit.

I've learned a long time ago not to give money on the streets. I will give food, and things, but never, ever, money. Money has a bad habit of making its way to drugs, all by itself. And, being in law enforcement, I can't stand that.

I give money to buskers, if I listen to them for a while. But I agree, no money for the beggars and scammers; it all goes to drugs.

Can this inane thread make it to the magic number of 100 posts before the inevitable hammer falls, and it makes its wretched way into digital oblivion, there to lie, forgotten, moldering, unmourned, unlamented, until, phoenix-like, it surges back to life when some poor sap does an unfortunately configured search and bumps it by accident?

Well, can it?

It may have been the first multiple-phrase talking doll on the market. A string pulled from the back tripped some sort of cheap loop which then played one of maybe a dozen different short phrases. Like Al, my sister had one, too. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

My sisters had them too until they went missing ... they were found in the trunk of the car with duct tape across their mouths.

Pretty much sounds like the conclusion of every date you ever had.

nevermind.

I was perhaps rude enough to get this thread shut down. Let's pretend I was.

?? Not sure I quite understand what you're trying to imply. I'll assume by your post count that you don't peruse the board often (even if you did register 2-1/2 years ago), but this thread is exactly the sort of thing that used to go on here, without anybody crying or complaining. In fact, this type of respectful disagreement mixed with deliberate humor actually made the community stronger, especially among those whose skin was thick enough to realize that nothing said was a direct personal attack.

Take an afternoon or two, go back and read - really read - the archives from this board's beginning to about 2007. You'll see a vibrant community with lots of good-natured humor, more than adequate self-policing, and just plain fun.

gulfcrow, welcome aboard. Haven't noticed you here but you're welcome to jump in anytime, I'm sure.

Most of the conversation posted above started inside my own head....so no one would be expected to follow. I typed something, posted, and changed my mind. Unfortunately, there is NO delete post function here....all should be reminded like I was. I suppose an empty post was another option, but I'd never do that.....except when properly trained by an expert in media manipulation. (like that mind control geek Standing Ovation)

Caustic humour used to be really really common here. Many of us miss it, but Mom said it scared the kids....so there ya go.

But I still think this thread has had it's day ...
....so I'll have a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster and forget about it completely.

With that said, let's withhold the caustic humor 'til after 11 p.m.
