Location: Flahdaw | Any OFC'ers here have a regular gig at a bar or restaurant, where they play every Saturday/Sunday/whatever? What are the positives and/or negatives of a situation like that? I'm guessing it's tough to get a standing gig where you can make a reasonable buck. I don't really care about the money, except if I'm going to commit to something like that, I might as well get paid for it. Most of the people here that are performers seem to play around at a multitude of clubs, which I wouldn't want to do.
So anyone fit this bill? |

Location: Bluffton, SC | Just one thought here but I would think unless you're in Vegas it'd be a benefit to the proprietor to mix up the performers and not have a "house band/performer". Different performers are probably going to bring different fans with them giving the owner a wider audience spread. And I'm not sure I'd go to the same place every week if I knew the same guy was playing there every week. Could be totally wrong on that but I would think it'd be a bad financial move on an owners part to try that.

I assume you have the opportunity to do this. No, I don't nor have I ever done what you are asking about, BUT, I have heard you play and Sing. YOU are a natural and you are well worth the buck from any one!!! I would pay to hear you again! JMHO. Good luck! |

You're probably right Weas, for a change, but there are a few places here that attract a more mature crowd, that do use the same guy for a few months, then switch out. I like the idea of playing somewhere one night a week for a month, but not sure how realistic that is. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | There was a guy who used to play in eastern Connecticut who was so good he had a following wherever he played. If I heard he was playing somewhere I would drop whatever plans I had just to go hear him play. If he had played at the same place every week I would have been there every week.
Dark Bar is better than he was. |

Have you audition tapes to the Mangrove Grill in Parrish? How about the early gig at Woody's River Roo in Ellenton? Both places have solo acoustic acts in a nice setting.

With that said, I'd go see certain people at a regular venue.
Back in my hard rock days, I used to wait for a band called "Little Village" to play at a place called Boneys in Winsted, CT. Loved to go there just to take in their show. |

Believe me, if I was lucky enough to be around Woodstock I would be at that get together. I'd like to play Weasers's Ute. AlanM could play lead guitar, Michelle sing harmony, and Weas....uh...serve drinks. Perfect. |

There were four or five of us in 1988 playing the Charlottesville VA/UVA circuit of clubs that had a following where ever we went...the club owners loved it and the crowds rotated throughout the evening...win win all around!!! |

Location: Michigan | the wife and i use to stop at a restaurant by our house as a last call for the weekend evenings to chill and have a drink and listen to some entertainment . they had an electric guitarist who had all his background music tracked so he would sing and play leads and so on . he was very good and played every friday & saturday night . he was a music teacher by day and he did this as a shits and giggles thing to keep playing out and make a little beer money .the owner of the restaurant kept him around for over 6 months and i gotta tell you no matter how good someone is we all need a bit of balance on some things and music is one of them. the musician was great but it was getting old listening to the same musician for that long.the restaurant owner finally realized it and changed it up a little by getting some other people to fill in for a bit.
i felt bad for the guitarist because it was a steady gig that made him a little money and close to home but it quit working for the customers , so dark bar
if you do go for it i hope that even though you are a super good musician don't burn the same place out by (out staying) your welcome . try some different venues so it keeps you and the audience fresh.

Location: Chicago | Jeff and I had a standing gig for over two years at a sweet club here in Chicago ( KATERINA\'S ). We're now regrouping (rehearsing with a hand percussionist instead of double-bass/snare/hi-hat heavy-sticks guy). Starting recording 10/31.
To the question: It is the BEST way to build a following. People get used to you on the bill, the days you play and it grows! Much better that than sporadic gigs here and there around town. Out most recent gig there last month drew a crowd and we made over $100 each. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | While this doesn't count as a regular gig as you intended DB, this summer up north there was a regular circuit of open mics I went to, Wednesday at the Gypsy Joynt then Maragaritas, Thursday the Guthrie Center, Friday at La Salle's Market, and a few others thrown in for fun. Not really like a gig since you only get two or three tunes usually.
The tricky thing was to keep a list of what I played where so as not to repeat, or to keep it to an intentional minimum.
The second part was to never play the same guitar twice.....
Or wear the same shirt...........
Now the wiseass, but not really, second part is to stand or not. The honest answer is that some songs I do better sitting and some are better standing. Most songs sound best in my bathroom in Florida, but that's another issue...... |

it will start serious and then go of course for a while and become amusing to be part of and then it will eventually get back to the original format without being locked out or anyone taking any offense to it .
