Playing outside has got to be tough.
#1 The acoustics are bad.
#2 There are all kinds of noises and distractions
#3 It's hard to be heard without amplification
#4 You are limited in how much equipment you can cart around

Sure, you can go commando, but then again what about this rig....?

One A/E guitar and soft case with tons of pockets for storage,
one 1/4" cord,
one headset microphone Here
One battery powered acoustic combo amp Roland amp

So you only carry a guitar in case in one hand and a small amp in the other and you are fully powered wherever you end up going. The soft bag holds the mic, the cable, your songbook, etc. You can even stick a guitar stand in some of them. For about $500 you are in business (assuming you already own the guitar).
Cool or what?

Get a Roland CubeStreet like one of These...

They fit in a backpack... You can turn them on end and sit on them!
And you can find them for less than $250.
They were going for $300, I think that I paid $179 new for mine, and I still got the box!
(For some reason the RED ones were on Clearance)
Anyway, the CubeST has a mic channel, two 6.5" speakers and a tuna.
It has Reverb, Delay and Chorus. Plus Flanger, Flogger and Phaser that I never use.
And it is loud enough to have Security tell me that it is too loud.
(What do they know? Damn rent-a-cops on a power trip!)

I agree with OMA. It's what I use. Although the AC-33 is a great battery powered amp. The cube Street is lighter and powerful enough for most outdoor settings.

Okay, very cool, but the headset mic is essential, right?

There's one of those little Roland amps on Craigslist here for $50 (smaller than the one OMA posted). I wondered if they'd be any louder than a deep bowl acoustic.
I was thinking about getting it, but then got distracted by a Fender Acoustasonic 30 for $125. Since I don't busk, rarely use any of the 3 amps I currently have and rarely play in public, one would seem just as practical as the other. Maybe I should get both.

What "maybe"? Makes perfect sense to me, Mark.

They do make nice end tables to hold my wine glass when I'm watching football in the basement. They used to be good for beer cans, but I got one of those beer holders that mounts to the side of the mic stand. Now SWMBO can't say I never use the mic stand. Still haven't used the mics yet, except to see if they work.

I've spent lots of money on potential, 95% of which never gets used. (kinda like a Porsche) DING!

A headset mic is a good idea,(no mic stand to carry), I sometimes use one. I also use an Electro-Voice N/D 308A mic about 2 feet away and don't plug in my guitar. I get a nice blend of both guitar and voice. The N/D468 is what they offer now.

My beer holder won't work on the headset mic.

I thought the beer holder wore the headset mic.

Say OMA, how long does a typical charge last on the CubeStreet?

In term of transporting gear;, a back axe strappy thing to convert the case into back pack, or a back pack guitar case. Also, a case with a long strap, like a gym bag to carry, the amp and other gear. That way you're relatively hands free.

DB,
Does that Roland Chorus osscellate between the speakers? I played a big brother to this amp about a year ago, and to get that stereo chorus was beautiful.

I think it has the "spatial chorus", but I don't own one (yet) but was gonna try one out. It's got a cool looper thing built in too, demo'd here

Answering a coupla days late....

Hours!
Disclaimer: I use rechargeable AA batteries which are 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts.
Since I am starting with less voltage they die quicker.
But I can go out and play for three of four hours before the power starts to drift.
With the CubeStreet, first the power drifts down a bit, then it just STOPS!
So bring extra batteries. It only takes six AA's. But it does last for Hours.

BTW-- I would LOVE to have a Roland AC-33, but cannot afford $400.
