Does anyone know if there were any original 1681s made that, from the factory, had the old traditional OP24 pickup with the accompanying three band equalizer and a single black plastic 'top hat' knob, instead of twin wooden knob set up that is usually seen?

Yes, from 1986/1987.
Before, they were two knobs FET pre-amp if I'm right
