Today I was discussing the purchase of new gear with a colleague of mine (an accomplished player and producer...) and the topic got onto buying so-called 'vanity' gear... Guitars, amps that are highly prized (priced?), highly praised and ones that might lead to a certain amount of envy from other players...
After much pondering, we both arrived at the same conclusion. When you get to 'our age' (you know the one I mean...), hopefully you have had a bit of success in whatever field you have been pursuing for the last 20-30 odd years, worked hard, struggled through years of crap gigs, crap gear, crap managers... etc etc.
So why should any of us have to apologize for a somewhat (admittedly...), self-indulgent pursuit of great guitars, great guitar sound... whatever?
If I never pick up my Ovations again... I derive a great amount of pleasure just looking at them sitting there on their stands.
That is the definition of 'art' isn't it? The fact that I can pick them up (and hopefully...) coax a soulful or moving noise from them as well, is a BONUS!!
A Samurai sword is a tool, right? They aren't used for slicing peoples heads off much these days (at least I hope not...), but they still inspire awe hanging on walls the world over.
I think an Adamas (or a host of other beautiful Ovations...) are like that... Both a 'tool' AND a work of ART!!
I turn on the lights in my studio... look at my Adamas' and say a silent thank you... to the Kamans (both past and present...) for their innovation and all the fabulous craftsmen that allow me to feel that... every single day.

My Jewel is a work of art; Mother did a wonderful job on her, even if she's not exactly one-of-a-kind (though they're the only ones who know how many shallow-bowl custom Elite LXs with natural finishes there may be out there.) When people see her for the first time, they always comment on how beautiful she is, wonder about the sound 'cause she's so thin, play her, and then comment on the big sound from a little guitar. Art in two forms...

I've worked my whole life and made many sacrifices along the way (as have many of us here) and now I'm at a point where I can afford prized/pricey gear, and not at taxpayers' largesse. No apologies for that. And guitars look really cool hanging on every wall of my music room. |
