Well, I'm jealous.

I read a facebook posting from an old mate of mine here in the UK, who has for over 15 years been using a Celebrity 12 string. Recently he snapped up a steal of a deal on a slightly damaged Ovation 'limited edition' 12er. Don't know what model yet, or whether it was an LTD or a Collectors, but it was something no longer produced.

Anyhow, he sent it across the pond to the Mothership for fixing up. Which was great, but when he opened the return package the instrument had been smashed to pieces in transit.

So by way of recompense, Ovation have just delivered a beautiful new Adamas 12 string. Again I'm not sure what model, guessing a ME-II, but all credit to them. And good for him - he's a hard working and underpaid church minister/youth worker.

I'll need to make the trip out of town to visit him.

But is it OK to be jealous?

Ooh yeah. As long as your jealousy doesn't lead you to snatch it and run away with it. Just slobber all over it as you play it.

Just for the sake of completeness, I met my friend yesterday, and got the full story. I don't think there was Mothership involvement, and I'm not entirely sure anyone got a killer deal anywhere either...

He sold his old Celeb 12er and spent £1000 on what he'd been drooling over, It belonged to the owner of what was until the Fender buyout, London's premier ovation centre and he was told it was limited edition. Anyhow, he's not a model numbers guy, but described its scrolls on the headstock and bridge, the weave top with sparkly bits and the rectangular electronics. So I'd reckon it was a 1688 with OP24(+).

After my friend had a play on it, the dealer agreed to send it to their workshop in the north of England for a general set-up and tidy up, since the instrument had lain unplayed for years. Thing is, there was no hard case, and the dealer (no longer an Ovation franchisee) could not find any case long enough to fit the length of the 12 string headstock with scrollwork. So they sent it to their workshop in a packing case. And when it arrived it looked as though something had been dropped on it from a great height. the bridge was broken and the carbon fibres below it were ripped away.

There followed six months of hassle, wrangling, inactivity and frustration, during which time my mate, having shelled out a grand, was again playing a Celeb the dealer had loaned him. Eventually, the verdict was that it was unfixable, the transit company presumably coughed up some compensation, and my friend was handed a what he was told was a brand new guitar worth at least £2000.

Well, it's actually a 1598. Not an ME-II, but an earlier shiny top Adamas with epis both sides, no fret markers and an OP50 preamp. So 'new' as in not 2nd hand. But I wonder whether it really is an adequate replacement for a 1688 when it's looks are so different...

Nope ... It looks like He has been majorly ripped off. Nothing new they could give him would be as nice as the one he had. Maybe he could have contacted Al (aka Alpep) and got an estimate from the factory for a custom rebuild. That's the ONLY way I believe he could have been adequately compensated. The only way he could actually replace that one would be if someone here would be willing to sell one of their's.

Replacing what sounds like a late 80's Adamas 1688 with anything other than ANOTHER 1688 is a TOTAL ripoff!!

If someone had pulled this on me, there'd be blood on the carpet. A professional guitar dealer shipping a 1688 with NO case? You'd have to be %#$@ing INSANE!!

An ME is nice... but it's NOT a 1688. I hope your friend hasn't signed off on this...

addendum: There should be some type of legal action one could take against the moron that shipped this instrument... 'reckless endangerment of an rare guitar..." (or something similar).

:( :D

That's a helluva lot of money for a case, never mind the shipping and import duties to the UK...
