What is the ONE guitar that you actually PLAYED, that you wish you owned? Not one you heard about, read about, thought about..... but that you actually PLAYED that you just can't get out of your brain?

Toss up between the John Lennon Limited, the 1997 Collector and the 2005 Collector. When I started typing I had one. Now I'm up to 3 and just thought of another, so I'm going to stop.

First time I ever flew was when I went to Bozeman to visit the Gibson factory in 2007. I ended up bringing back a new CJ-165 Rosewood as one of the drawings for our little gathering. There's a well stocked music store in Bozeman called Music Villa. There was a very new J-185, only a couple months old going by the serial number. It was all blonde and I drooled all over it. The action was flatter than a Les Paul and the maple shimmered in the light like it was fluid. When I strummed a chord the whole guitar shook.

I didn't have a credit card otherwise it would have come home with me.

Martin Eric Clapton model. I think it was OM28 or OO28 or something (never did understand their designations). Have played two of them at music stores but at $3,500 per, dream on. Both sounded magical tho.

Went to Daddy's Junky Music once, and someone had ordered a kind of high-end acoustic Martin ($800 or so). Had a picture of ol' man Martin all over the front, so it turned out that the person who ordered it didn't want it because of the picture. What a sweet sound that thing had! Just couldn't justify it financially, but I REALLY wanted it. Not sure of the model.

Interesting question ...

Yes, Bill's D28 is absolutely stunning. Although in practical terms hard for me to say its stunning enough to justify the price.

Keeping it more realistic (sub $20k) I would have to say that the Collings varnish CJ and my own Collings Braz Clarence White certinly stand out. Cliff's roundback #54 is no slouch either.

Jeff has/had a very nice Lowden cedar top that I really liked. Crap, I guess there's just too many possibilities and in the end I guess I'm pretty damn satisfied with what I already have.

I started this thread because I've never had a guitar absolutely kill me yet....one that ate at me and had to figure out a way to buy it. I've played some super nice gits, most notably...
2009c Adamas- g8r
Takamine EF75-g8r
Collings something- Beal
Merrill something- Beal & g8r
Martin something- Bluessailer
Adamas 1680- Iffy
McPherson something
even my own Everett Celona

but after all these years of playing, I haven't played "the one" yet. Hopefully I will someday, and hopefully I'll know it when I play it.

If I had noticed the emphasis on "the one" guitar, instead of trying to think of "the best" guitar, I may not have responded. I didn't think of this thread in the sense of the holy grail of guitars, which may be an appropriate analogy. I think Stephent28 may have been looking for "the one" guitar a few years ago. You might see how that turned out, but I never found one that told me I could sell what I had, buy it and be happy with it and only it for life. I don't expect that guitar exists, just as I don't expect that the holy grail will be found.
BTW, I tried many of Stephen's guitars and "the one" I came home with was the 47RI and it wasn't just because it was the one for sale. It spoke to me better than his other guitars did.

That's cause they weren't for sale and I told them all to either be silent or whisper quietly!

I wonder if there even IS a "The One."

That Martin that I mentioned above just grabbed me and shook me up and down violently (much to the chagrin of the store personnel), but I managed to resist the temptation...Just didn't have the money at the time. However, when I pick up one of my 2080's, that same deep-down-to-the-core thrill still hits me. It hits me when I pick up the FD-14 after a layoff, or the Gretsch 6117, or the OFC II, or the MERB, or the '07 collector's, or the Classical.

I think that even if I were to find "The One" (I believe that Gallerinski owns it -- the wideneck OFC II), I'd STILL experience at least a little "The One fatigue" after playing it exclusively for some weeks, and I'd go back to one of the OTHER aforementioned "Ones." So, my theory is that "The One" is only "The One" for the moment. Then, moods, seasons and time pass, and the moment recedes into the mist. After that, you go find the other "One." Or even "Another One."

I think it was misinterpreted....by "the one" I only meant that you played it and then HAD to have it....couldn't get it out of your mind. I didn't mean to imply that it would be the last and only guitar you would ever want to play for eternity.
I have just never played a guitar that hit me sooooo hard that I then HAD to figure out a way to buy it.

Got it. Then, I guess that Martin must qualify, because I STILL pine for it, and I STILL intend to put a savings plan in place to acquire one like it. (Daddy's sold it in pretty short order.)

Right now I would say that I have The Ones. The 2080 was something I lusted over for a year or so. The Hamer Newport was calling me for a while, too, before I broke down and bought one. Then I played Karen's Patriot at the Hot Springs jam last summer. That guitar called on me so strongly that finally I got on an airplane a few weeks ago and went to South Dakota to pick it up in person! The Viper fills the solid body single coil pickup category very nicely.

The One That Got Away was the 2007C. As much as I really loved that guitar, it was redundant with the 2080. Yes, I think the 2007C is 99% that good to be comparable. I just didn't have a need or use for two guitars of that category.

Sorry, but that is ugly. I just don't like men's faces painted on my guitars. It looks like a dime store souvenir guitar.

I've heard tell that applying images to the top of a guitar can vastly improve it's tone. That of course depends on how well the image is applied and what the image depics.

That may be the key, who is playing it. The DX175 is a high pressure laminate patterned to look like wood. It's one of their least expensive guitars and by all predictions should sound like shit. But in the hands of a maestro who knows ...

I don't really know if there is just ONE guitar that has it all for me. I like a bit of sound variety in my life, sometimes I like it bold and deep and sometimes light and airey (sp?)depending on what mood I'm in at the time. And of course they all seem to play differently also. If I WERE to find "The One" that could do everything I want it to, I'd sell all my guitars and buy that one ... in the mean time I'll just have to be a guitar slut.(Sorry if anyone is offended, but I couldn't think of another word)

I guess I kinda misidentified it as a "kind of high-end." They were selling it for $800, and at the time my budget said, "too high-end."

I CAN vouch for the fact that it sounds REALLY nice. Definitely a high-end sound.

Ditto on Beal's -28, Merrill, and the varnished Collings...I like Beal's 1537 proto too. Thanks Flysig for the nod to #43....it really sustains and jangles well. On a side bar - I sat down in a Guitar Center a couple years ago - they had a used Don McLean model Martin - on that day - in that room - with me playing it - it was one of the best sounding - not playing - instruments I've held in my hands...on that one they got it right....didn't have the 5k handy to buy it.

The best guitar ever was the first one my parents bought me back in 1971...It was a no-name nylon string we got in Venezuela where we were living at the time. I had been learning on my mother's old "student" steel string and this was just the best birthday present ever. Someone swiped it during a break at the first coffee house I played a few years later, and it was recovered with some pretty big damage. I've had others since but none ever sounded as good or meant as much, at least in my memory.

I had been learning on my mother's old "student" steel string and this was just the best birthday present ever. Someone swiped it during a break at the first coffee house I played a few years later, and it was recovered with some pretty big damage. I've had others since but none ever sounded as good or meant as much, at least in my memory.
Bitter-sweet memory of a great guitar!

Do you still have it?

Kurt,
Nice when you achieve your goal and have the guitars that you really want.

Well done!

I came across it -- in pieces -- when we cleaned out my parent's house before they moved a few years back. It was a total wreck and made me sad to look at. Away it went to the dump, but not before I showed it to my husband and son.

When the police recovered it after the theft, it was still playable...and the Florham Park NJ police had a ritual at the time that all recovered instruments must be played for them before they will release them. So I serenaded the squadroom. One of those silly high school memories.

I had the priviledge of playing three different Pre War Martin D-45's (one of which belongs to Stephen Stills). All were stellar instruments, but all were off-the-wall unaffordable for me.

I've not found "the" guitar yet. I know what it will be.. I'm just not there yet. I've come real close, but no one has actually made it yet.

A Neck-Thru 2 pickup (H - H) with both pickups split so I can go single coil. With a Fishman Tremolo bridge w/pickup and a blend like on the VXT. Custom Moser/Baron 5-position varitone switch.

So basically the wiring of my Moser Genesis on my Carvin 400T with the addition of the Fishman bridge and VXT Blend control. That would do it.
