He's using Schaller versions of banjo tuners originally designed by Bill Keith (though Keith pegs are usually referrred to as Scruggs Pegs, probably because Earl Scruggs was a partner in the company for a while and is probably a more famous player than Keith) The tuners have stops on them that allow tuning to 2 different pitches. The player than can tune to either pitch instantly and accurately.
He also has homemade fine tuners between the nut and string post on each string. Same principle as fine tuners found on Violin tailpieces.

I don't think he came to Boise last year. The year before the turnout was poor and he said he didn't know if he'd be invited back. I'll try to round up a few more people to go with me this year.
