This happened to two strings in a row from a pack of 3 sets of Martin strings. They break just where the wire wraps around the ball - see pic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37071329@N02/5330140603/
This one broke just before it was tuned to pitch (0.012" tuned to E in standard tuning)


This is on an AA-31: that part of the string is touching nothing, except maybe the wood of the string hole on the usual Ovation-type bridge

Do I need to do something other than return the strings?

Not sure, but I would think that it was faulty strings.

There is nothing there to break the strings, no sharp metal or anything.

I just put set of Martin Silk and Steel on a Celeb Dlx. Had 2 break before being tuned to full pitch. THey looked a bit tarnished coming oput og the bags, and were only about 6 months old.

It makes me wonder if their machine nicked the wire during the wrap process.
