Location: Cork, Ireland | I can reluctantly confirm that a pint or two of Murphy's Stout will dry out the cords instead of lubricating them. Non-sparkling water at room temp is your only man. Or a bit of both.
Also I find the more often I sing, the easier it gets (like exercise I suppose). Not sure if it sounds any better to anyone else but it feels better to me. |

Location: Flahdaw | I tried this stuff. My throat seized up and I could barely talk. Must of had an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients. That said, it might be worth a try. Just don't try it right before you go on stage to perform. Lots of testimonials as to it's effectiveness.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I found the best thing is warm water in the winter, and room temp water in the summer. Avoid dairy products for about 3 hours before. No food two hours before. Of course, sometimes you can't avoid eating, but just roll with it.
Maybe for some people mints would work, but not for me. |

Breathing technique and exercise are more important.
I've gone as long as an hour. Start off like Tony Bennett and end up like Joe Cocker.
I don't know how the gig guys can go all night.
Oh wait.. yes I do. Breathing technique and exercise (aka: PRACTICE). |

When given the opportunity, I use this before I sing. |

Location: Alagoas, Brazil | My singing teacher strongly advises against mints or other kinds of throat softeners. These will numb your throat and you can harm yourself without knowing it.
While singing, go with water, at room temperature (or if you're in Brazil and temperature is in the 100's, you can drink water slightly cold).
Caffeine, milk or food will demand water to be metabolized, so if you had any of them you'll need more water than usual.
I also strongly advise that you get a voice coach (preferably a Bene Gesserit - they are the best). There's lots of things to do to sing comfortably.
Best regards,
Miguel |

I find the best thing (for me anyways...) is hot, black coffee. It almost acts like sandpaper getting rid of phlegm (ugh!!) and other nasties.
Plus it gives you a bit of an edge (always good...) around midnight.

Coffee is not good because it produces acid, which will burn the throat and stress the vocal chords, particularly if you have reflux issues.
A low acid tea, warm, not hot is supposed to be good. I've tried peppermint tea and it is okay for singing.
Room temperature or slightly warm water is fine, but not ice water.
I don't seem to have any issues with a good import dark beer, but a high carbonated Bud or Miller ain't good.
Wine is too acidic for me.
Don't know, but I wonder if sipping room temperature whiskey would mellow out the old chords. Sipping, that is. |

| The key is to maintain hydration, ie drinking plenty of water throughout the day you are to perform. Just splashing water into your throat before a performance is not going to make up for things if you are dehydrated. You can't directly hydrate your cords anyway (you'll choke) |
