Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah

My personal fave, but I just like Rufus' voice in general so pretty much anything he does is fine by me. :D

Jeff Buckley\'s cover . A case where the cover is better than the original; can't be improved on.

Along those same lines of a cover being better than the original, Obadiah Parker\'s cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya".

And it goes without saying that ANYBODY would do this better than the original, but Travis does a great "Hit Me Baby One More Time".

Buckley... hands down & no debate.
.
They wanted to use the song in "Shrek".
They had Wainwright record it because he was under contract with the right record company.
.
Just so happens we played it tonight at Folkin' Friday.

For the actual movie soundtrack (the one heard while watching the movie), "Hallelujah" is performed by John Cale. When later released on CD, the soundtrack album includes a performance by Rufus Wainwright. It was a song originally written and sung by Leonard Cohen, but it has been covered many, many times by various other artists such as Allison Crowe, Kate Vogele, and Jeff Buckley.

Kinda like "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"

(No... That link doesn't take you to my version, Thankfully)

I'll stand corrected on the Shrek thing Al.

And I know what you mean about it being over-played in the past couple years. It caught my ear years ago when I heard it used on The West Wing TV show. But since American Idol got hold of it....

I had some reservations about playing it myself but we've been playing it in practice just because we like it so we thought what the hell. One more time won't create a black hole or anything.

One thing we do is shorten it to 4 verses.

then I found this one...and it took the song to a totally different level...simply incredible:

One of the local musicians, Marty Meyer, a GREAT pianist with a fantastic voice, does a version of this with his nine year old daughter, Isabella. That is my very favorite version. I'll see if they have it recorded somewhere and post it here.

Love 'em all, and I'm not that much of a Cohen fan.

Must agree with MusicMishka; the audience, event, and artist made the moment transcendent.

With all due respect to those other artists, this performance on last year's American Idol (I'll never forgive my wife for getting me hooked...) is the one that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. This guy (Lee Dewyze) has a great voice that is perfect for this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP9jXHTtIyg

It's also on his first studio album, but not nearly as well done, IMHO.

No debate? Come on now!

I agree this song has been WAY OVERDONE recently, and in most instances not very well in my opinion. One of the first to jump on the post Buckley Hallelujah bandwagon was Brandi Carlile. I saw her perform it about 10 feet from my face at a local club on Capital Hill here in Seattle. Her version is a copy of Buckley's (I believe she though it was his song at first).

My favorite for sure...

I don't see us playing that out in public again in the forseable future. We'll practice it just because it's a good exercise but that's about it.

I listened to about 6 different versions of the song and came to the conclusion that... I just don't care for the song, (although the American Idol dude did do a nice job with it).

I listened to all the posted versions yesterday, but kept thinking I had heard a better version. Thanks, Damon. Brandi did the version I like the best. She has one of the best voices out there, in my opinion.

if you listen to the lyrics literally

the fourth, the fifth, a minor fall, a major lift

the song does NOT follow that progression

We missed one--Justin Timberlake's rendition at the Hope for Haiti concert just after the earthquake. I thought he did a nice job, especially for something that was probably out of his comfort zone.

Jeff Buckley gets my vote.

I was once at a bar in Worcester, MA with some one-man band kid playing covers. This was right after Jeff Buckley passed, BTW. He starts launching into Buckley's version (had a beat up old Fender Jassmaster and everything) when someone from the audience yelled out "Don't you even think about it!", and the kid stopped abruptly...
