Location: Reading, Pa. | I have an Ultra and twice now the round nut on the bottom of the string split in half and string blew off.(G string). There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the pinless bridge. I use D'addario strings(lights). Should I try new strings or could it be my guitar causing the problem? |

| Bad lot of strings. There's nothing on the wooden bridge that could cause a metal nut to fail. Take them back the the store where you got them, they should replace them. |

Location: closely held secret | ...um. How could the nut or bridge not being smooth cause the metal nut on the end of the string to break? |

Location: MA | The current issue of Guitar Aficionado has an article on counterfeit strings coming from China. Improved printing techniques are making it nearly impossible to tell fake from real by the packaging. D'addario strings are prominently featured and one of the major faults is with the quality of the nuts.
Did you buy the strings from a reputable dealer who can vouch for their authenticity? |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I've had trouble with the string coming unwound from the nut but never the nut itself breaking...the counterfeit string theory sounds plausible...
+1 on taking the strings back for a refund...a reputable dealer will replace them... |

Location: Alagoas, Brazil | I've been having the same problem with a box (10 sets) of strings I bought in Guitar Center NYC.
The G string splits the nut in half, coming clean through the bridge.
Since its almost impossible get back to the store, I'm using a piece of wire through the nuts, holding everything in place.
Of the 10 sets, 3 already broke. |

There are some mail order companies, and brick and mortar companies who are associated with them, who seem to get discounts on defective merchandise that they turn around and sell at full price, knowing that people won't bother to send them back. Even if 90 percent go back to the store, they usually replace the defective item with a brand new defective item. Eventually a percentage of THOSE people give up. It is profitable for the store.
And some of the mail order companies know that you won't think it's worth paying the shipping charges to return things. Selling defective items is profitable for them too. |

12 sets of Martin SP's for $29.99. $2.50 a set.
Those have the potential of being Chinese knockoffs. |

Location: Alagoas, Brazil | Well, a single set of d'Addario's is sold here for about ten dollars. So, when I travel, I try to buy strings for electric and acoustic guitars that will last at least a year.
Usually I just go to a shop and check their prices, buying whatever seems fine.
Last time I bought electric guitar strings at Sam Ash, but they didn't have bulk packs of acoustic strings, so I went to Guitar Center.
The strings don't look conterfeit though, it seems thats just a bad batch, and the Gs are the only ones that are defective.
Next time will try to get strings from Al. |
