Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | With the recent addition of an American Telecaster, my surf package is nearly complete. Three USA surf guitars finished in Olympic White with tortoise PGs and rose boards (‘62 Jaguar, ‘99 Strat and ‘02 Tele), with a ‘65 Band Master. Still need to pick up a ‘63 Reverb Unit in black tolex to place at the top of the amp. Then the only thing missing would be a Hobie longboard!
. . . and on the wall behind a first year Vibro King.

I have two reissues, and was able to borrow an original for about a month. I couldn't tell any difference in sound, although the original needed some work on its pots. Like most other amps dating from Leo's pre-CBS era, the specs allowed for variation of +/- 25%. This is huge. You could, therefore, end up with an amp that was 25% over spec just as easily as one that was 25% under spec. Inconsistency ruled the day. The amps today are much more uniform and consistent. If anything, a vintage over-spec amp might compare really well over today's reissues, which are spot on with the original specs. I can report that both my reissues sound stronger than the identical reverb unit chassis built into the '93 Vibro King. |

you need to send one of those 2 brown ones over my way for an extended stay. Only one is in brown tolex. The other is a very limited special edition in Tweed which is part of my Bassman rig. Neither looks very good with the black, although I'm using the brown with the Band Master until I can find a black one reasonably priced.

I love the way chords just bloom when played through these reverbs.

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Joe, when I was growing up, my best friend's cousin had a red Mustang and a little Champ amp. I would meet him at Pete's house with my ES-125 and big (to me at the time) Gibson amp and we'd play every surf song we could. I loved that red Mustang. I'd been around a lot of Fender guitars belonging to others in our shows, but I could only admire them from a distance, or was permitted to play them just momentarily. That red Mustang was probably the first Fender guitar I ever played in depth. It was so much cooler than the ES-125. I knew some guys who would buy a Mustang just so they could swap out the bridge with their Jaguars. Neither of us had any reverb at the time, although my Gibson amp had tremolo. As a result, no matter what we did, we just couldn't get the reverb echo into our songs. The best we could do was place a metal garbage can over the amp, which was not only dumb and ineffective, but it left a round stain on Pete's mom's living room rug. By the time I owned an amp with reverb, Pete's cousin was long gone. The last Mustang I played (more accurately, tried to play) was a few years ago at a bass jam in Colorado Springs. The Mustang was a true relic hauled in by an original owner. Every screw and piece of plated metal was rusty, which, in and of itself, wasn't an issue, but, unfortunately, its set-up was a total mess. I offered to help him out with it, but he declined, preferring to keep it in its original but unplayable condition. |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | Yes Joe, Fender made white Mustangs. I have an all original Olympic white, tortise shell p/g, 1966 example that took up permanent residence with my daughter about 10 years ago. If I remember right, it has a whammy bar. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Seems like white was a very popular color for Mustangs. There are maybe a half dozen white models currently available on the Bay, with maybe half of those being original models from the 60's. |
