Since I have been a member, I have seen tons of threads where someone asks about getting a wide neck in a guitar. What is the Pro/Con of this. The only wide neck guitar I have is my classical Ovation. I could see if you have large fingers it would be a plus, but since I'm a God given Joe Average size person, I can't see the advantage of a wide neck, but then again I have never asked anyone before.

I find it more comfortable and easier to play.

I can play a standard neck just fine but prefer the wider neck.

Hi, The classical neck is 2" wide at the nut, the usual size for an Ovation neck is 1 11/16". "Wide necks" as the term is used here generally refer to 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" necks, which usually have a curved fretboard like the 1 11/16" acoustics, rather than the flat fretboard of a classical.

The 1 3/4" (the most common form of "wideneck") is only 1/16" wider than a standard neck, so it is way closer to that than it is to a classical. The advantage of the wider neck is that you can plant your fingers down without touching the adjacent string - this is not usually a problem when strumming, because one muffled string is not usually noticed. However, when you are finger picking, it gets noticed.

My fingers aren't particularly wide, but I'd always struggled with some chord formations when finger picking. 1/16" doesn't sound like much real estate, but it's been a godsend for my finger picking.

See the earlier problems I had:

Sorry for the size, this wouldn't happen on my Mac.

if you curve your fingers correctly you should not have any problem but as you get older and lazier and your fingers bet fatter the wider the neck the easier it is to make chords in the cowboy position

Whenever there's one of these 4 mile wide posts, you can be sure that TAFKAR's had some input.

Back on topic, I bought my wide neck 'coz it had a foil label and a brown case.

Well at least now I know. I was always assuming everyone was talking about a wide neck like on the classical guitar. I do understand about the finger picking, and rubbing strings. I have to really be aware when I'm playing or recording of my finger placement while finger picking. I'm not sure what the size of the nuts are on the UKll, Preacher, Viper, but I can go from my Elite to them and other than string size, they feel the same to me. I'm more than likely wrong but the necks on the Gibson LP and SG seem to be really wide to me and flat. Maybe is has something to do with the radius on the Neck. Thank you guys for the information. :)

Although I have very small hands, my appreciation for wide necks increases the older I get. Wide necks are little easier on my finger joints after hours of playing, and they're also a bit more forgiving of my sloppy technique.

I think it would make a big difference if they made the string wider at the saddle as well, but alas....
