So I was searching for Northwest Tonewood which is apparently just up the street from me and supply most of the wood for Breedlove, Gibson and I think Martin guitars and probably others. I don't know all the details as I haven't found them on the web yet... anywho... I ran across this diagram on the Breedlove site that shed some light onto the types of woods and why certain tops sound different from other tops.

It would be interesting to compare various laminates to their solid wood counterparts to see just how real the tonal "improvement" would be.
