Location: Yokohama, Japan | Got a 2078 TX Elite. It came with a Zero Gravity semi-hard case. While travel capable, its just a bit wiggly to transport. The handles arent fixed and the guitar swings laterally when carried. The case has backpack straps, but I am for better or worse NFL sized and the case straps can not open far enough for me to use them.
To resolve all of this, I found an Ovation deluxe (it has the silver lettering) used hard case. My problem is that despite being built for deep or mid bowl roundbacks... my contour bowl seems to be a very tight fit... any ideas what I might be doing wrong? (other than laying the guitar in case, closing the lid while making sure that cloth strap doesnt get stick in the hinges?)
Is anyone else having this problem? |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I now have two Zero Gravity cases... They are okay, but I ain't impressed.
It seems that many sellers more are including the ZG cases cuz they are cheaper.
I am surprised that a contour bowl even fits in the ZG cases, the two that I have came with Mid-Depth bowl guitars.
Since it is hard styrofoam I imagine that it can be formed to fit the contour bowl.
This brings me to your current Ovation hard-case...
You are not doing anything "Wrong". Older Mid/Deep-bowl cases aren't made for Contours.
I have many OHSC's (Ovation Hard Shell Cases) and only a few will take a contour bowl, and those are the new 8158 with "Ovation" molded into the top.
The inside of your case is also molded styofoam, so you can force it into a shape to match the bass-side bulge on your 2078TX.
You can do this with you thumbs and knuckles, or with the help of a ball-peen hammer or a smooth rock.
Trial and Error would be the way to do this...
Smoosh alittle bit, fit the guitar in the case... Smoosh alittle bit more, until it fits well. |

Thanks for the info. Its little shared owner tips like this that users cant likely get from the mfr, yet way increases ownership value!
I think I found the pad and the butt end of the case built into the case lid. From me forcing my guitar into the case has almost mashed the pad into nothing, but not quite. I may perform surgery. That, or the round rock into the case. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | The Ovation nylon-covered foam filled case is made by TKL (at least mine is). Mine is made specifically for SSBs, but I know there is also a deep bowl model. Anybody know if the deep Ovation (TKL) nylon/foam case fits contour backs? |

sellers are providing the zero gravity because that is what is matched with the guitar.
in fact the zero gravity case was backordered for a year. |

Location: Yokohama, Japan | Well, The Zero-G seems like a decent enough case. Ive already flown once with it without any other protection other than some thin bubble wrap attached at the last minute to keep the surface from getting bunged (certainly no structural protection there!) I even forgot to detune the strings. - in my defense, I was distancing myself from a nuclear disaster at the time... Still, the guitar came through like a champ.
Still, you have to unzip to whole perimeter to get the guitar in and out. Also, its a pain to carry as the shoulder straps wont open far enough to accomodate my chest. carry it by the handle, and it swings laterally.
But more to the point is that in the Tokyo area (at least before the quake), people dont watch where they walk (or run). Unlike the Osaka area where I personally witnessed men holding doors for women, people making way for each other even during rush hour... In Tokyo, people just run into each other for sport. If they decide to run into me even when carrying my guitar (its happened many times before and will happen again...) then I want the hard case there to remind them that eyes are for watching where you walk. Also so my guitar doesnt have to take the brunt of the lesson learned.
This brings us back to hard cases NOT being popular in Japan, and my previous difficulty in obtaining one. Im glad I found the one I did, and will take steps to make it work well. I figure if I can eke out about 2mm more of space, the lid will close without objection. It closes now, it just needs "guidance". |

If you need to mash down case foam to create a new shape in a guitar case... but you DONT wanna tear of the interior cloth... Youd want something like the back of a ball peen hammer... just bigger, and not metal.
...like maybe the top of roll-on deodorant?
Just over an inch wide, smooth plastic, with a HANDLE so you can stick some elbow grease in it!
After jumping out of bed at about 1am and only going at the case about 5 minutes, the case now fits quite suitably thank you. Im certain that tomorrow when I'm wide awake I can go back and make it even better.
Then I can get back to singing (insert favorite adjective)-woman blues, instead of hard case blues... Though I guess both phrases can mean the same thing?
(again, in the light of day Im sure that last crack wont be half as clever as I think it is now)
Thank you all for your input. I think this case is closed!!
(Aw man, there I go again! ...somebody STOP ME!) |

sellers are providing the zero gravity because that is what is matched with the guitar. Maybe in Korea.
And a ZG case is $20 cheaper than a hard case... often more than $20.
$79 with free shipping...
And on eBay (and other online sites) you must be careful cuz Sellers use the word "Case" rather loosely.
I cannot speak to ALL sellers' motivation, but the fact that the ZG case is cheaper leads it to be the case of choice with AX's and TX's... if they include a case at all.
But at least many are including some kind of case.
As to fitting a contour into a case; I guess it depends on the year of the case...
I have two 9158 cases that Contour bowls won't fit in.
So I keep the Adamas and the Flame T in them...
But I wanted to put the Sweet T in a case that sez "Ovation" in the fur... But it won't fit. |

"maybe in Korea"
when did you become a dealer, that you can speak on what is provided to dealers?
in fact you can't speak to ANY dealers thoughts at all since you are NOT one. |

I did comment on what I have noticed is being provided BY dealers.
I did also comment on what is being provided by online sellers and eBay sellers with Korean Ovations.
They can provide 8158's (or any appropriate hard case) if they want to... They made the decision.
I could be wrong... It may be that Hard Shell Cases are not available with AX and TX.
But since I can buy new 8158's online, they are still available.
Like I stated, I cannot speak to ALL sellers' motivation...
But I can speak to what I see being listed online and on eBay.
I am not a Dealer, but I am a Consumer. |
