Does anyone know if there is a website or app for the smart phone where you can locate and identify chords.. I have a electric chord finder and a big 2 inch book. But what my question really is.....Is there an application where you would like touch a string on a fret and it puts a dot, then x on not played strings and O's on open strings played. Then it reads this and tells you what chord it is. I can figure out the root note, but understanding if it's a 9th, aug, dim, Dominate I can't. Since I have begun working with other artist with collaborations I need to be able to id the chord I'm playing so the bass player, and lead gutter player knows what I'm doing.
And for me to be a better player and writer.
Any suggestions?

I don't have an iPhone, so I can't speak to any standalone apps for that, but a great website for what you describe is jguitar.com, specifically their chord namer . A web-enabled smart phone should be able to reach that page.

Just google "smartphone chord finder". It depends entirely on which phone you have (you neglected to mention). There are apps for iphone and android, probably others.

Kitmann, the answer is yes. I have an iPhone, so I don't know if your phone will work or not.

If you're going to pay for a guitar utility app, "Guitar Toolkit" is the one to have. It has one of the best tuners I've seen on a phone built in, chords library (largest I've seen), metronome, scales, and more.

AND YES, you can actually place dots on a fretboard and it will tell the chord name.

IN ADDITION... all of these features are great for a guitar, but it will do all of these great things on a 6,7, and 12 string guitar, 4,5,and 6 string basses, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele.

I highly recommend it.

+1 for Guitar Toolkit. Peterson also has iPhone and iPad versions of their strobo tuners which work very well.
