Location: Texas | Hey guys, so the action on my ovation is pretty bizzare.. around the 1rst to 5th fret it is fine, but by the 12th fret the strings are about a whole centimeter away from the frets.
Is this my truss rod? Should I tighten it a bit as to make the neck bend farther back, reducing the height of the strings? I know the issue is not the saddle height, as the strings barely rest above the edge of the bridge on the current saddle set-up.
Any help appreciated. Thanks! |

The truss-rod only adjust the "relief" over the middle of the fingerboard.
If your string-height gets progressively higher as you go toward the bridge you either need to adjust the saddle height or you need to reset the neck. |

Location: Vancouver Island, BC | Put a straightedge across the lower bout, 90 degrees to the strings/neck, up against the back of the bridge where the string buttons are located. Looking at the clearance out at the edges over the purfling will show you how much of a "belly" the guitar has developed. If your saddle is deep/low in the bridge, someone may have removed the shims under the saddle to compensate for this.
IMO up to 1/8" is fair on an ol guitar (help me out here friends), but I have had to deal with 1/4" on a newer LX, and it was quite a challenge.
Maybe a trip to the music store/luthier for a quick evaluation is in order? |
