Location: South of most, North of few | This morning, I awoke about 5 am in anticipation of driving over to the other coast (of Fl.) to look at a Collings OM that was for sale. I finally got away about 7 am, and got to the guys house about 10 am. I played the Collings, then a Weber roundbody, then a Bourgeois OM. I couldn't quite decide which one had the best (to me) sound, then he said, "I do have another one that I was thinking about selling" He then pulled out this Mahogany Martin 000 17S. I played it, and I'm afraid to say, I found it better sounding than all the other ones. I figured I'd post a couple of pics in spite of the thrashing I might take here, so here goes. Fire away...

I think Tony has a similar mahog Martin. I've got one like it in Spruce/Koa and love it. You've done well. Congratulations.
Dave
BTW, Isn't it cool how Martin makes the headstock so the strings don't rub on the wood? Brillient design. |

BTW, first dibs... Just hold onto it a lil' longer than usual until my 2nd mortgage is approved.
Guess I'll have to ya soon to get a first-hand report. |

I've got a Martin D-15 and love the all mahogany tone. An 000, slotted, 12-fretter, mahogany Martin is just perfection in my book. |

Not sure about the D-15 but D-15S is a great guitar.
Martin did a great job on my D-25K2 all Koa. Now 28 years old. |

James, James, James.... You know darn well that "we', and this includes "you", are the most tolerant group of guitar homos on the web.
Nice guitar.

Another great git for "The Ol' Trader" :D
I've played a couple of 00015S models I liked a lot. An all mahogany guitar has a nice mellow sound.
Dave is right Martin has a great slothead design. |

To me, an all hog just screams out sitting on the street corner under the lamp on a moonlit night with some rotgut whiskey playing the blues.

Location: South of most, North of few | Steve, it sounds amazingly as good, to me, as my CEO,(which I never thought I'd say about another guitar) a little mellower with tons of sustain and depth for such a diminutive body.
I was fully intending on buying the Collings, and took my CEO along to do an A/B so I knew where it stood. If I would have just gone there and played the Collings, I would have bought it. But after the comparo, I decided it wasn't any better at all, much less to spend 3k. This brings up an interesting point: Do you all think I am just "attuned" to the Martin sound so much that I think the Collings was inferior? (may be a bad choice of words) Actually, I think the Collings sounded remarkably like the CA GX. More midrange than the Martin.
On a side note, the gentleman who is selling these had been to Newport and ordered two VERY expensive units, hence the sell off of these. But, he was keeping one guitar of the 5 in the room,.. a Martin OM. I felt the Bourgeois OM (Adirondack top) was the best sound of the other three, with the Collings OM (also an Ad top) coming in close 2nd and the Weber Roundbody (Coco bolo body with Engleman top) a distant 3rd. |

The one I bought was a little more than that, but it's in almost un- played condition. From what I understand, there aren't many of these around (S 17) and the Mahog is getting more scarce. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | TJ, you might just prefer the "Martin" sound over the Collings. Nothing wrong with that.
For me, the Collings are a tad more "crisp" than the Martins that I have owned and I prefer the Collings sound.
Course, were just pickin at the fleas cause without a side by side comparison, most of us would be more than happy with either. |
