Location: Omaha, NE | Ok, so I'm packing up last Sunday, having just finished my weekly worship leader gig.
Some guy I've never seen...mid 30's ish, looks pretty nerdy...comes up and asks "How come the hole on your guitar isn't in the middle?"
"Just to look interesting", I replied.
"Ok. Thanks" and he turns and walks away.
I guess it was, and then wasn't, all that interesting. |

Location: Tennessee | You needed a marketing guy there to explain to the nerd that the hole placement redirects the sounds waves to help tune the guitar to it's optimal tone range, which is further enhanced by the modified top bracing pattern which accentuate the tonal properties of the Koa wood. The hole is strategically place to work in concert with the bowl design to eliminate any standing waves causing muddiness in the sound.

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I just tell them it makes sense. All the string tension puts a great amount of stress on the top, and then they go and put a big hole there on regular guitars, further weakening the top. To make up for it, they have to put heavy bracing in there, and that reduces the vibration of the top resulting in diminished tone and volume. Putting the soundholes where there is reduced tension means they can use lighter bracing.
Then I strum an Am7 followed by an E. THEN they understand. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I just tell them it is an advanced/superior design, then go into the same speech Allison laid out, and watch their eyes start to glaze over. After reading a brochure on Ovation's design back in the early 80's, I was sold on them, hook line, and sinker. |
