Location: Maine | Nice old guitar in excellent shape for sure !
I'm curious how it is considered the first Legend?Shouldn't a pre '67 guitar have a shiny bowl, grover tuners, winged briged etc etc.?
The "-1" after the model number is usually the color. -1 = sunburst

What I find odd is that the dark sunbust band looks a bit irregualar within the lower bout? Could be the pics ? (They're making me hungry for a snack ;-) )

I had figured the bridge had been replaced since it wasn't a five point or a winged one and the tuners had been swapped at sometime but:
Dan,
How can it be a pre-1967?
I thought they didn't make Legends until 1971.
I thought that they all O's had shiney bowls until sometime in 1969.
I thought that up through 67, O's had three piece tops, that one is obviously a two piece.
The label is of the older style, ok I get that.
I'm not disputing your guitar, I just don't understand how it is a pre 67.
Are the neck and the label from 67 and have the top and bowl been replaced at some point?
Can somebody hop in and help me understand here? |

Location: SoCal | Ok. Here's the problems that I see (sorry Dan -- aways a chance that I'm wrong. Per my wife and kids, that happens all the time).
1. Textured bowl. That started in mid 1969. And it looks like an early texture.
2. The label, if it's 4 digits, would be late 67 to mid 68.
3. The bridge is a replacement (happened a lot with early Ovations). Doesn't tell us anything.
4. The inlays on the neck and the binding say the guitar was built somewhere between mid 1969 and late 1971 or 1972. It was only about a 1 1/2 to 2 years that Ovation built a Legend using the fretmarkers from the Deluxe Balladeer but with binding around the neck.
Conclusion? Probably mid 69 to mid 70. But the label doesn't fit with the physical characteristics...... |

| i believe the bridge was replaced or refinished. i wasnt told which. thanks for all the insight. i have been trying to find out for certain and have heard so many theories and fuzzy tales of fuzzy records. thanks for all the input on this its pretty exciting and mysterious all at once. I can barely type from sanding my preacher project. just finished the water based wood grain fill. almost time to get "laquered" up. |
