Location: Chicago | What do the switches on my AKG 3000 B represent? What do they do? They are labelled:
"0 db / -10 db" and
"lin" | |

Location: Chicago | I think I need a translation of this alien language:
"Due to its surface area and special capsule tuning, the C 3000 B large-diaphragm transducer produces an exceptionally pleasing, smooth sound. An improvement over the original mic, the C 3000 B's switchable -10dB preattenuation pad immediately follows the transducer in the signal path, thus increasing the C 3000 B's SPL capability by a true 10dB. Loud sound sources are therefore no problem. An acoustically optimized cardioid polar pattern makes the C 3000 B an excellent choice for both recording and live sound applications where high gain before feedback is important."

The minus 10db is simply an attenuator that lowers the sensitivity of the mic., so that it can withstand high volume levels, in case you want to mike -up a loud guitar amp. or trumpet etc. for acoustic guitar set it to zero db ,
the surface -area and capsule tuning describes what they did to improve it ,
Cardioid pattern covers an particular area where one can move in any direction and still gets picked up well , for more info , check here :
http://www.crownaudio.com/mic_web/tips/mictip2.htm
capable for both recording and playback indicates that it is not very prone to feedback.
LIN means Linear , ( full frequency range ), otherwise a bass -filter is engaged , rolling off from 500 Hz.downwards with 6db octave .
It is interesting to note that it is an ELECTROSTATIC Mic. Very Nice !!
3 db equals twice as much
6 db ,, ,, four times
9 db ,, ,, eight times
10 db about ten times

Another question: Jeff's dedicated digital recorder has only ONE input. I'd like to mix piezo with my AKG. We have the use of a Mackie mixer (Mackie DFX 12 12x2 I think)but can't make sense of the board. Have you ever used such a device? If so, any pointers on blending the AKG C 3000 B with piezo direct through the Mackie. Last Friday we tried and all we got was sh***t.
I personally would like to have a little "air" around my Ovation sound....

BTW is it a Mackie DFX 12 12x2 Mixer as I claim?

Did you mean No sound at all , or Bad sound ?..
The C3000B requires phantom power, ( 9 to 52 volts ) 48 volts would be good ,if the mixer does not supply phantompower, than either
aquire an auxiliary 48 volts power supply
or
aquire a mic. pre -amp, The Best solution ( imho )
this one I have myself :

This one you might be more interested in , it has a few more possibilities

the studio V3 retails for about 70 dollars , it might just be the answer you seek :)

Location: Chicago | Very helpful. Jeff has an older Boss dedicated recorder that may somehow participate in the problem. I'll have to ask him what the exact model is and what the Mackie mixer "specs" are.
We got VERY weak sound, not at all the HOT results I was accustomed to hear from the AKG at home...

Location: Chicago | The Mackie mixer provides phantom power. Do I still need to look into the pre-amp option, I wonder?

Yes , I would still recommend the Studio V3 ,
first :
A pre -amp. will boost the signal ,there is a Level control , and with that , the Mic.`s signal can be boosted , if that is not enough , than there`s a button that boosts the signal even more , Much More !!.. by 20 db ..more than 70 times !!
Enough to blow the heaviest metal rocker into Distortion Nirvana ( doubt if you have that need ) :)
Phantom power can be switched On/Off .
It has a Phase reverse button , can be useful to adjust Mic./Instrument with the rest.
Output level ( Volume control ) with a cool -looking meter to aid you in staying away from " clipping " , a type of distortion that scares even deadmetalheads .
It incorporates a radio -valve , many ( including myself ) like the sound of a valve in a well -constructed pre -amp. ,especially , when used in conjunction with digital equipment .
Yet , what really is Useful ( Important ) is it`s " voicing knob " , with that , you will be able to alter the sound significantly , the difference between a so-so sound or " oochy mama " ... :)
Look , you can buy yer`self poor in purchasing pre -amps., there are those that costs several thousand dollars , but for what you have in mind , I would say , that`s the one !!
I `ve got the MP -1 ( the smaller model ), have used it for over a year , works flawlessly , Longevity seems to be no problem , They are known to make Good and Reliable stuff.
I am not connected with A R T , But ...I am connected with the OFC , so ,check with Al , maybe he can cut ya a good deal :)
