Thanks for the encouragement, but I suspect getting Willie Welch's signoff involves more than I have time or patience. However, there is something else rolling around in this pea-sized brain ...

An OLYMPUS recorder would be a perfect thing to have for this project!

(disclaimer) This has been a shameless plug for Mr. Big :D

WOW - I already got the first submission !!! Way to go. Now the rest of you slackers get busy !!!

Yes the OLYMPISS would be nice. Sometimes simple is best. I was messing around this weekend and tried something. I've got this elaborate chain of this into this into this into this... and it all ends up getting dumped into a DAW of which I use 5% of it's capabilities. Yet, off on the side I've got a very nice rack mount MD recorder (remember those?) whose sole purpose is/was to take MDs recorded on portables and be able to mix/load them into the DAW. For Ghits and Siggles I just took a guitar, plugged into a DI box and then right into the MD recorder. And guess what - it sounded friggin awesome!!! Go figger.

At first I thought OK, a reason to bust out Logic, set up all the equip...

Then I read the link and saw your "Just sit in front of a mic and let it rip." comment

So now I'm thinking set up a mic (too bad I don't have that Olympus) stick the magnum in the kid's hands, plug in the UKII, hit start on the drum machine... and GO! :D

Gotta teach the kid some bass lines. Should have SOMETHING for you soon.

Ahhhh... all originals this time, eh??

Well, since I've become an award-winning singer/songwriter, I'll see what I can do.
Usually I would not spend the time & effort composing a song unless there was at least enough cash involved to treat some friends to a few late night waffles. However, I'll make an exception in this case.... for all my fans.

And while we're on the subject, I still think Dave, John & Bill got snookered that night at the Mermaid.

Ok Brad, I can't keep the secret any longer ...

We paid off the judges to award you at the Mermaid so that you're confidence as a songwriter would get boosted and you would thus be highly motivated to contribute to the forthcoming CD. Yes in hind sight it was a rotten thing to do, but appearently it's worked to perfection.

Looking forward to your submission.

Dave

PS - Personally I think you should just record your Wind song. That WAS really good ...

Manipulated or not, I was one very happy & surprised OFC'er that night.

And I know for damn sure that it was Paul, Bill, Cliff, and John's back-up work that made that tune sound so much more than it really was. So, unless I got my back-up band I think the Wind song will have to wait.

Also Dave... Thanks for doing this. I have really enjoyed the previous editions.

I know we have plenty of songwriters here but Dave's CD will hold more that 20 songs. So I want to encourage youz guyz who are on the fence to step up and give it a try.

From "Sippin' from the Fire Hose", by Matt Smith.
There are basicly 3 types of songs....
The Story Song.... The Love Song.... and the Slice of Life Song.

My Wind tune was a Story Song. Which was easier because I could avoid any personal expressions of emotion because it was a fictional story about somebody who was not me.
This one looks like it will be a "Slice of Life" song. I'm trying to make this one more personal but the trick is to convey the information without using I, I, I, or me, me, me all the time.

The theme is to describe, as vividly as I can, what it feels like to sit out on the dock in the summertime. Trying to write about what I'm "feeling" (cringe) is very counter-intuitive but the subject matter is safe enough.

So come on OFCers... If I can do it, so can you.
Just take the first step and if you get stuck, come back here for some encouragment.

Now you guys have gone and done it.
And your not going to like it.
You have not gotten your OFC CD submissions in quick enough to please the member formally known as Tuppy.
Therefore Dave has sub-contracted my services as a professional carnival barker / sales motivator.

This is your heads up call.
Get busy now and you won't have to deal with me.

AJ, Muzz, maybe we could write about a Brisbane Summer. Something like:
"Oh God. When will it freakin' cool down? Why did I move here? I didn't know humidity got higher than 100%. I'm gonna commit suicide. Install an air conditioner ... aaaaaahhhh! Drifting into a peaceful sleep wafted by the gentle sounds of a million compressors".

uh, oh . . Witko's brought out the BigGuns with "Il Duce" Durasa . . .

Started on mine this morning as well.
Made a good, constructive start. ShouldBeFun.
The last thing that I tried to sit down & "record" was my "Wind" tune, and the result of that proved a sonic abortion . . .
Since then, I've acquired some mixing tips from AmeliaTempleman, and a pair of KRK reference monitors from LostArt Vintage.

OH, Yeah . . .
Night&F@ckin'Day.

This'll be MUCH better . . .

btw;
Messrs. Smith & Whitehead:

Please don't think that we've "abandoned" that little tune we composed on the back porch of FlaHouse on Sunday . . .

I just need t'add that last verse & then I'll send a rough demo to you both for your approval . .

(Unless either/both of you guys can get to my place before the Deadline, & we can submit it . . . it WAS an "IslandTune" . . . )

But then again, it's not quite how it sounds.
It's the local back line company. The sound guy has a board and records stuff after hours. I sit in the warehouse with a mic and he'll be in the other room and it will take me about 4 or 5 tries to get it right enough. This will be just me and the guitar done in one shot. I can't sing for shit so it may all be flushed anyway, but it's worth a try.

I loaned him some guitars for a show and this is payback.

Ditto. At least you write good words. I suck at that more than I do at singing.

I was trying to put something down this weekend, but I seem to be stuck in a rut.

Yeah, I paid a real musician to record my rough tracks (5 vocals, 3 rythm) and turn it into something with reduced suckage. I will try to ensure there are some Ovations in the mix, but he's not a fan.

What can I say?, I'm surrounded by Philistines.

OK, mine is getting closer. I got both guitar parts finished and recorded today. Sound seems OK, but in a quiet part of the song and again at the end I can hear a dog barking. Too bad it's not a Beowulf-like wail. I think I'm going to have to re-record tomorrow but maybe I'll leave it as is. Plus, my amp started humming like crazy ... I think I've got a weary tube. :( All in all, it's going to be a real garage-band feel. How's everybody else's tune coming along?

I've scrapped the song I was working on. I tried leaving it sit for a while and coming back to it but no. It's way to wimpy and introspective.
For instance....

Sittin' on the dock late in the day
The boats slip quietly by
On their way back from the bay
The sun's about to set the sky ablaze
And the clouds bloom like flowers in the sky

See what I mean? It's just not the type of song I'd choose to sing.

So, I guess I'll just make the best recording I can of my Amelia "Wind" song and send it in.

Try reversing the order of the lines. I like the way that works better and you might be able to tell a good story if you always wind up sitting on the dock at the end of the day. Just my two cents.

Good idea, Bob. I just altered it a little...

The sun's about to set the heavens ablaze
And the clouds bloom like flowers in the sky
Sittin' on the dock late in the day
The boats slip quietly by
On their way back from the bay

...not too bad at all, Bradley!

Gotta get away from "sittin' on the dock" and find another body of water. Too close Otis Redding. ;) I like the other lines, though.

Some good suggestions... thanks.
However "Fernandina" is kinda a mouthful to us non-natives, but Amelia Beach might work.

Just for converstion sake....
The structure of the song was going to have the first line of the verse describe the time of day. Morning, afternoon, evening, and dead of night. Maybe that's just a little too organized?

Every night, I'm lying in bed.....
But every morning I wake up and worry....

Midnight Special
Well you wake up in the mornin' ....

Setting the time and place is a well established key to getting on with the story. If it gets the audience to the scene, good. Then you can get on with the story.

You want to tell a story/song everyone will remember? Tell one only you could know. Then rewrite it and take the 'you' (personal) out of the 'I'. (storyteller) Or tell the story in the third person...

Hed never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.)

Story needs development; it either starts with the general and moves to the specific (Everyone feels this....I only feel this for you) or starts with the specific and moves to the general (I feel so lonely, but everyone gets lonely) and uses that sense of motion to suggest change, growth, revelation.

I had a frekin HD crash with all my tunes on it. Got the majority on HD backup so all is not lost.

However, last backup was on 6/1/08 so the last 6 or 7 takes/fixes have been lost.

I'm in the same boat with Al. Hope I can get it redone in time but I got so much other shit happenin right now time is a real constraint.

Stephen, I had a similar problem: the motherboard in the PC freaked and burnt the socket to one of the memory modules...getting it fixed at the shop along with a new large HD....hopefully it will be back by today (late)...my laptop which I'm using now is just too small and I don't have the Cubase on this one...I hope to have the time to get it done...

Well, nothing I put down sounds as good as I remember what was lost (probably a figment but what the hell)!

I think I'm gonna blow off my original "summer" song and change my "Wind" song to "Summer Breeze" and lay down about 20 tracks of nonsense and submit the damn thing.

Because of the magnificent incredibility of my wind song....uhhh....I mean summer song, it will be sent in it's uncompressed glory of roughly 40 megs.

Wabbit, what's the best way to get you something that size (short of the mail which we don't have time for)?

I can see we're all busy lining up our excuses ahead of time ... Al sold his HD Recorder WITH his songs on it? Come on Al, first of all we don't believe for a minute that you actually SOLD anything, much less that it had any of your songs on it.

I have the hard drive I sold the recorder. actually traded it for work done on my house, after the guy finally finished the work the recorder was actually worth 300 less than when we made the deal.

as for the olympus I need to place another order for them I sold the one I was keeping for myself.

I probably should have done Alabama Bay, it's more summery, but did Temptation instead. Up to you Dave which one you use, the Addiction tune is kinda fun and Davis put a nice break in it. Temptation is the best of the three I sent you.

Well, the wabbit gave tentative approval to the "whimsical" reworking of my wind song, now known as the summer song......

so I will just clean it up a bit,
add a few more "whimsical" parts
and then submit it to Dave.....

Maybe Dave can make it the 1st track.....then everyone can rip it out of the player and destroy it...thereby blowing the opportunity to hear all the good tunes that would have followed  and forcing them to buy another copy!

THANKS GUY! KEEP 'EM COMING.

I've got about 8 songs so far in hand, or in the mail. By popular demand let's extend the deadline through the JULY 4TH holiday weekend. Since I have not recorded enything myself yet, you can see where that request came from.

Don't worry abuot all that fancy production crap, just sit down in front of a mic and let it rip (or in my case let it r.i.p.).

Cliff, don't you feel like I do - not winning or placing at the Frisky Mermaid was a blessing in disguise? Imagine the PRESSURE to deliver something truly outstanding for the OFC CD if you happended to walk away from Amelia with some prize money in your pocket? Oh the harrr-ah.

And speaking of prize money - Am I the only one who doesn't recall the winners opening up the bar tab and taking care of their buddies for a few rounds?

I paid out in waffles.... remember??

I wanted to write something new but the project crashed and burned. So, your going to get my Amelia Wind Song....
I mean my Award Winning Amelia Wind Song.

And BTW.... With the knowledge and confidence I got from Matt's Clinic I have managed to write my VERY FIRST lead riff.

I completely "choked" on my tune at Amelia . . .

I had played & played it (while I was recording it) to the point where I was almost "sick" of it.

In the days leading up to it, I just didn't play it. With Temp coming up & travelling, there just wasn't "time". That night at Amelia, I just "lost" the song in the middle of it . . . . "oh well".

No matter, I think the one for the CD'll be a MUCH better tune . . .

SmartMove with the "waffles", Brad . . .
Gotta' be MUCH cheaper than a BarTab.

Come to think of it, most of the "band" did not make that trip to the Huddle House. It was just a bunch of hangers on / groupie types.

3 tracks done.... one to go.
After that, render it down to a wave file and send it out.

4 tracks??? Am I the only one here who just records by playing guitar and singing???? Well, that's what I would do if I knew how this damned recording stuff worked. And had been able to finish a tune.....

Man, what ever happened to grassroots ...

I sat in front of 2 mics, one pointed at my head and the other pointed at my guitar. If you've got 15-20 layered tracks you're trying WAY too hard ...

this 1687-9 inspired me to compose a new slack key song i'm calling, "summer country slackin'". i'm liking the guitar and the song very much. but inspiration came a bit late so i will email you a "good quality" mp3 on friday, dave. my wife is off work and can keep the youngsters occupied while i record. it's been impossible to find quiet time lately.

when i play slack key, i thumb the bass line, strum rhythm and play the melody line all at the same time so i'm trying to get a good mix of everything on the recording. i recently rec'd the lexicon omega unit from mike and i'm having to learn it also. and ol' dogs CAN learn new tricks...

It's not so much "multi-layering" as musical incompetence . . .

I can't "play" the piano, so I record the "left hand part" first (with my right hand), then I record the "right hand part", and then pan them slightly opposing each other . . .

Then there's the guitar(s), vocals, harmonies, bass, cajons(two different ones), then the flute(s), then the . . . then the . . . . then the . . .

Piano??? Why you little Liberace you!
Tho that is a pretty clever way to compensate.

I got:
A guitar strum the chords track-
A guitar capoed up and fingerpick the chords track-
An every so short lead solo track-
And the vocal

I gots no cajons
If I think it just has to have some kind of percussion I'll do what I did last time. Beat on and empty Ovation Hard Shell Case.

I'm having very very high expectations for Clifford's recording. If it's not a contender for a Grammy, I'll be very disappointed......

I'm trying to get my kids together on Friday and record my song in a single track. Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, maracas, triangle and congas. No overdubs, no layering. We'll see how it turns out ... I'm hoping for a garage band kinda feel which would suit the tune. Wish me luck!

y'want "GrassRoots"??
I'll send ya' a f@ckinCassette!!!

Something that Matt said in Amelia about songwriting "cinematically", . . so, . . I chose a "title", a "key", . . and wrote/played what I "saw" . . . .

Brad;
Empty plastic watercooler bottle from the office.
y'Cut an oval-shaped(@4"x6") "sound port" at about mid-ship.
Sounds f@ckin' AWEsome!!!

Granted, it doesn't have the cajon's kick/snare sound, but it sounds Cool!!

Buck, this weekend.

Dave, I kinda did the same thing as Cliff.

I got one guitar track, 4 bass tracks, about 10 vocal track, 1 cajon track, 2 special effects tracks, etc.

No there isn't 10 vocals but because of the various harmony parts and volumes it was easier to throw each on a separate track and mix them down that way.

Isn't that why we have DAWs :D So that we can replace a word here, a phrase there, a couple notes here, cut out a part we don't like there...etc...etc...etc.

Regardless....still a mess. The song I lost to the HD crash wouldn't been much better but I just didn't have the time to spend recreating everything I had put into it over the prior month.

OH well.....if it makes it on to the CD and members don't like it, they can learn how to use the "next track" button on their remote.

I still had fun.. ;)

Not if "In the Sea" makes the cut! One track of drums, followed by one track of rhythm guitar, with a touch of stereo chorus and compression. Then a track of acoustic guitar bass line and acoustic embellishment. Two tracks of lead guitar with different tones. One track of male lead vocals, after twenty takes, with compression, EQ, and creative editing. One track of female lead vocals, one take no effects. Two tracks of two female backup vocals. One track piano, one track synth, quiet and barely there on the left. The outro has reverb and left-right-center echo with fadeout.

Hopefully the only place where effects or production are noticeable is the outro. The intent was for the song to sound natural.

one track for me. i am recording one take plugged in and one mic'd to see which one i prefer. and since the 1687-9 has the stereo output option, i tried recording using it, with a splitter connected to left and right channels, but for fingerpicking it just doesn't sound right. strumming works better in stereo, imo.

I agree ... I'm using the stereo output going hard left and hard right with an additional mike on the soundboard going straight up center. Mixed right, I'm getting a very cool chorus effect in my rehearsal runs. Hope it turns out when we do the live recording tomorrow.

Record two stereo strumming guitar tracks at the same time. Use a mic and the piezo pick-up. Brilliant!!! I'll try that next time.

Brad, you'll find that there is some phase difference between the mic and the direct piezo signal. The mic signal will be about 1 millisecond delayed for every foot the mic is from the guitar. You can go into your software and nudge or drag the mic signal to the left to line it up with the piezo signal. If you don't get it just right, it will sound phasered or flanged, maybe weak and thin. You can listen as you nudge to find the sweet spot.

It's 6pm (mytime), and the song is "done".

Being that this song is also a birthday present of Jeanette (tomorrow), it was pretty much recorded without her "hearing" it (til tomorrow).

I recorded all the vocal tracks while she was outta' the house, and all of the "headphone"-stuff (like piano parts) when she was home.
She's come down thru my MusicRoom on her way to the laundry t'see me silently banging the keyboard with a pair of headphones on.
Sez I "look like a retard" . . .

GamePlan is to let her be the first to hear it (in the headphones) tomorrow after breakfast/presents. Then she'll be hearing it "ad-nauseum" Sat. afternoon as I mix everything thru the KRK's (ohboy, ohboy, ohboy . . .).
T'morrowNight were on our way to a "Supper Club" in AsburyPark for dinner & t'see Amy's band.

(oh yeah, . . . and Kim).

SundayMornin'll finish mixing, and it's off to Witko . . .

Unfortunatly, after two weeks of trying, the new MOTU is still not recognized by the computer and so I'm without any recording means. Pending a miracle, no song submission from me: Hopefully next year.
Since I sold everything else to get this I'm now O.O.L.
Besides sending the MOTU back in for warrenty work, I'm looking into other means of hardware...

Good to know Dave but the file should have been about 32mb. Sounds like something got cut off on the way so I will try it again.

This time I will zip it up which should reduce it down to 2-3 megs but be complete when you unzip it.

Song is 3:06 so it that doesn't match, let me know.

Well it WAS 32MB but I edited out all the bum notes and got it down to 28MB !!!

No, it's fine. 3:06 on the money. For some reason it came out smaller.

Give me a call, I've got a question.

Oh boy ... I got the main recording done on Saturday and yesterday we added an additional take with the hand percussion. I think we got the sound I was looking for. I have a new recording deck and did not have time to learn the device, especially the effects and the onboard mastering so getting the file onto a disc was a manual process at the end. But my whole family was around and participated in some forms or fashion, even if it was just moral support. This was a totally different experience for me ... instead of track on track by myself and stressing over each take, we convened the usual suspects and had to play the whole thing live and find a way to mic the room to keep it from turning all into mush. Essentially, I ended up with a live track on top of a live track with a total of 12 channels recorded. No overdubs, no tweaking, no punch-ins, no computer "nudging", no onboard effects processing or any of that stuff. There were no computers involved in any of the process. Just pure "hit the red button and play it as best you can". I got the room reverb and spatial effects from mic placement. I think it came out OK. It probably needs some compression ... maybe the producer can do that?

I will now import it into my computer and make a .wav file. It'll either be in Dave's inbox later today or his mailbox by Wednesday.

I got my submission over to Dave over the weekend after many nights of fiddlin with it.

Last night.....I had such an empty feeling because when I went into the studio there was nothing to do (recording/touchup wise).

Dave, I think we need a new topic for the next CD (in 6 months-Winter/Christmas inspired maybe) so we can start working on it.

Withdrawal symptoms......ugly stuff!

Trying to get my file to Dave, but got a message saying Dave's mail server barfed on the size of my file. Hopefully it'll be the same story as Stephen's and all is well.

Yup ... I sent you an mp3 yesterday just in case it sucked so bad there was no reason to kill 38mb of electrons. The one I tried to send today was a .wav file. They are both from the same mix/master file.

There's an .mp3 of mine on my webpage, but the .wav that went to Dave for the CD sounds a helluva lot better . . .

Evidently, the version of Cubase that I purchased came with a limited number (like 20) of times you could rip a Cubase file to an .mp3.
I used my "last" one for this tune.
Naturally, Steinberger now wants me to purchase the ".mp3 translator" from them.
Anyone know of a viable alternative??

I'm not looking to make wholesale changes.

I'm really just looking for a software alternative for ripping to .mp3 . . .

For MP3 conversion I use a free program called Switch Sound File Converter that you can download for free. It seems to work just fine. I have no idea if there is a difference in quality of MP3 conversion, but I have no complaints about this program so far.

I'll take a Corona to go with the pair of chairs, Cliff. Very nicely done. Lots of textures. Ms J must have melted.

As for mp3s, I just import the tune into iTunes as an mp3 at the highest res setting and then go into the folder and grab it. I capture all the the info about the song in iTunes before I import. Files are between 5 and 6 megs.

Cliff, I'd recommend Audacity using the LAME mp3 encoder .

Open your WAV file with Audacity, then Export it as MP3. Hit "Options" to tweak the bitrate, etc. Very straightforward.

You can download Audacity for Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix.

An mp3 is only as good as its encoder. The iTunes encoder is not well-thought of. LAME is.

I posted my beach tune to my myspace page. It's called "Carmelo". It should be the top song on the player. Go here: http://www.myspace.com/stonebobborocks

For Mac users, there's a LAME iTunes plugin so you get the better quality and keep it easy. Unfortunately not an option for the Windows version of iTunes.

Didn't mean to step on any toes, Bobbo! Most of my MP3's are ripped via the iTunes encoder as well. And by modern standards, at lower bitrates to boot. They're fine for my tin ears. :p

Cool stuff Cliff.

So do you actually play the flute or was that the keyboards?

I need to set up a site like Bobbo or you or some of the others that I have seen/listened to so that I can have a place to dump my stuff.

Vocals are already there. It's only one word. Think of it as a posthumous nod to Marcel Marceau. ;)

Stephen;
The flutes're "me".
The "darker" ones at the beginning is my old Armstrong nickle-plated. It's kinda' like playing a piece of plumbing,
but it's got a cool, "breath-y" sound.
In the middle, I added Jeanette's silver-plated. Brighter, and . . . well, "silver-y".
(btw, the "ocean" sounds're from Jeanette's SharperImage "sound machine".)

The site is on Yahoo. Easy/Cheap.

Haven't heard Boobo's, yet.
Can't do MySpace here . . .

But I couldn't wait.
Very, very nice Cliff. I can't wait to hear it with proper speakers.

I own a 1983 Collector's and 2002 American Flag #79. I love playing them both. I'm trying to decide on a good acostic amp, haven't made up my mind on that yet.

Do "acoustic amps". You'll limit it a bit more toward what you want. You need to figure out what you want it for, how much you want to spend, etc., and then decide.

Welcome copsidekick (which is better than being the passenger in the back.....) what the fellows obove mean is, use the search button near the top of the (this) page (under 'post a pole') to search the subject and you'll be linked to all the discussions we've had.

I still lean toward using a bass amp, but I'm a bass player so it makes sense to me.

PEZ, the theme for this CD was "Summer". If any of them fit the bill, send it to Dave.

If not, make sure you write and submit a song for the next topic (TBA).

Before you make a final choice, check out the Crate acoustic amps. I spent two days at a NAMM show with the intention of finding the best acoustic amp. I came home with a Crate Gunnison.

Good luck!

Yup. Got the artwork together and am making a test package tonight. Let's all send a thank-you note to my boss for getting the office such a nice new color laser printer. I stocked up on blank CDs adn cases on the way home from work. Just need the mailing packets. I should be posting the ordering instructions on Wednesday once I get a postage quote on the whole deal.
