Location: Parkersburg, WV | My '77 Custom Balladeer recently started buzzing at the nut after 34 years of string changes and tunings. The factory was gracious enough to supply me with a replacement and I was wondering if there is any trick to removing the old one. It is still firmly glued in place and I want to remove it cleanly to avoid possibly taking a chunk of wood out around the channel the nut fits into. Any tips, tricks, and advice would be appreciated.

| I use a small piece of cold rolled or mild steel that is the length of the nut, place it against the nut on the first fret and gently tap the steel with a small hammer or handle of a screw driver. gentle taps until the glue breaks loose.
You could always make some "pardon the expression" nut dust, press it into the nut slot, add a drop or two of super glue and re-cut the string slots.
You will more than likely have to cut the string slots even with a new nut installed. |
