The Aussie Ning OFC page is (was) the most frequented group on the Ning site. 439 pages of banter so far. (Ironic, as I was one of the most vocal opponents of the whole Ningthing in the beginning.)

Well, something has gone awry with the post order and the postings have virtually ground to a halt. This glitch seems to only affect us Aussies.

Its been suggested that we (the Aussie OFC contingent) start our own group on Facebook.

What I'd like to know is, what does the Ning site offer that doesn't already exist in the Facebook universe?

Miles has asked for donations to help fund the Ning sister site but also indicated that he was looking at free alternatives.

Facebook is free. Why not migrate to there?

I'm happy to contribute a few bucks to alleviate Miles' current credit card bill as he's already copped that one, but not willing to keep throwing money at something that is freely available elsewhere.

I don't want anybody to think we're jumping ship. It's just that this glitch has been p*ssing us all off for over a month now and the conversation's run dry.

Here's what's been set up:
Aussie facebook site

Miles/Al, if this upsets you in any way, let us know. The aim is to enable local conversation without clogging up the main board with stuff that is uninteresting to 99% of the members. It's not intended to be in competition.

If this works, maybe you could just shut down the Ning site and encourage people to set up Facebook sites. There's already several Ovation groups on Facebook

I like the Ning Site for the Photo and Video capacity, don't talk much there.

I think fb for what y'all do is good.

Facebook has photo and video capacity.
There's also a really old fashioned internet thingy called 'MySpace'.

Ahhh.... Facebook.... Where to start?

You cannot even read a page on Facebook without being a member.

Nothing is "free" ... you pay Facebook with your personal information, which gets you onto marketer's lists, etc.

I don't know if it's still the case, but the last time I considered a Facebook account, you had to accept that you relinquished all rights to anything posted on your Facebook page... If you (our one of your "friends") post it, Facebook owns it.

I know that sixty-three gazillion people think Facebook is the greatest invention since Lyrachord©, but I'm not one of them.

Just my 2¢...

The downside of facebook directly address the what most people use Ning for.

1. As standing stated, you are sharing everything, many are not comfortable with that. Also some people can't get facebook at work so they prefer ning which isn't blocked.

2. Speaking of sharing. Because we are a closed club, we probably shouldn't post cover tunes, but we won't get axed if we do. Facebook is constantly pulling what it deems as copyrite infringements even when it isn't.

3. Then there's the whole blogging/commenting thing that many want to keep in our group to some extent.

4. There are limits to file lengths on facebook and to my knowledge you can post Video's but not sure how to post just an audio file like you can on Ning. Also Ning's interface for uploading audio and video surpasses anything I've seen.

Ning raised their prices based on features we do NOT use. That's why I'm looking elsewhere. There are features like paid membership subscriptions and content management that are just beyond the scope of our needs, so it's elsewhere.

My partner in crime is working with Drupal now. That is one of the "social network" platforms. We can run it on our servers, so that will likely be the solution. We have just under a year to get up to speed on Drupal and re-invent Ning, but that's the plan.

I will also look into the issue of the posts on Ning, cause I don't really understand the problem.

Miles, the problem seems to be isolated to us Aussies. Nobody else seems anywhere else in the world sees what we're seeing.

When we go to the site, at the top of the first page is the oldest post, from when we first kicked off the whole Ning thing. The most recent post is the very last post, at the bottom of the page 400 odd pages later.

I'd personally rather keep it in house and NOT use Faceache (I spend too much time there as it is), but this glitch is proving very resilient and incredibly annoying.

Last I checked, it was that way for everyone, not just the Aussies. You guys just had way more posts than any of the other groups.

Y'all know where all the current Downunderer threads are...

And that they are in chronological order, Old to New...

Since you cannot figure-out who changed the order...

Why don't y'all just open a new "Group"?

(and don't let anyone mess with the settings/preferences)

Nobody messed with it. It just changed itself one day.

Only Richard, Me and AJ can change the settings.
AJ couldn't be bothered. Richard is too scared to touch anything in there and I know I didn't do it. (Flackster???)

There isn't anything in the settings/preferences to change it. I remember seeing something like that a long time ago, but it's not there now.

Fill, you shouldn't use the same joke in the same calendar year.

DB, it's the 'sister site' where members can store pictures, music and videos. There are also some specific interest groups. Click on the link at the top of this page, just below the Ovation Fan Club logo or go to - http://ovationfanclub.ning.com/

It was meant to be a replacement forum for this one, but... (long story)

Just for clarification, from the horses mouth as it were, that was NEVER the intention EVER. A move to new forum software is in the works, but that is just an issue of time, timing, and money.

Don't mean to distract... just didn't want anyone to get their feathers ruffled.

I'm sorta... no I'm actually cross-posting this...

It looks like you guys are using the "comment wall" for a big discussion (3 years worth). If it was sorted latest on top, that was probably an error. If you look at facebook, myspace or anywhere else... the "comment wall" is almost always oldest on top. The discussions properly show the latest on top and takes you to the last page of the discussion (topic) just like it does on a form like this (ovationfanclub.com) does.

That's the beauty of getting old. You get to experience the same things over and over without them getting to be redundant. :D

I suppose the point is that it previously sorted itself so the newest stuff was at the front (which is how Facebook walls appear), then it turned itself around. This meant people could bookmark it, go instantly there to see if there was anything new/interesting. Now people need three steps (go, scroll down, select latest page) which seems to discourage casual comments.

This is where the disconnect is. There is no wall for the groups.

Now... for what it's worth, as I was typing this I was also switching to Ning and I have a surprise for ya... :)
